It looks like you were fishing icy waters and fish grow larger for winter months. Catch the same ones during summer and they'll have lost plenty of weight. I believe that's true for all fish in northern waters and it definitely was for Chain Pickerel in Massachusetts. A friend caught a 27-incher during summer and it barely weighed over 3lb, max 4lb. A friend and I caught a 27-incher ice-fishing and it was a little over 7lb.
They can't move fast in icy water, so they capture less prey then.
What makes you say that these fish are or were "on the last year or two of their lives" ? Northern Pike can grow considerably larger than the ones your group caught, though perhaps not in the waters you were fishing. The record sized one caught in No. America and that I read about in the 1970s was well over 40lb, but under 50. Wikipedia says one of the record ones in No. America was 46lb. So at 30lb, I'ld guess that they had more than a year or two left to live.
@nwtstretch Do you have any good ways of getting pike off the hook without getting the hook in your own hand. I dont to ever want to hurt the fish but i am always getting the hook in a finger or hand. 4 times this year i have had to have a hook removed. HELP. ty man. you sound fish savvy so i thought id ask. thanks for your help.
@worrior777 Using a pair of pointy- and long-nosed pliars works, but fishing tackle stores also sell long-handled hook removers that are kind of like pliars at the end. The latter is better to use, if you ever catch fish and the lure is far into the mouth, where hooks can get caught in the deep part of the mouth, whatever it's called. Regular long-nosed pliars work, but while you can manage with them, what's sold in fishing tackle stores is surely the better recommendation.
When picking up a Pike or weighing it, you should not hold it vertically due to the intestines of the fish being to heavy and can damage, to weigh get just a net withough a handle and put the fish in it and hook a weigh at the top.
@nwtstretch actually they dont live in a gravity free environment. you may weigh less, but you arent weightless. even astronauts say that the testing they do in nasa pools is nothing like being in space, because graivty still governs you. when you are upside down in a pool you still rattle around in the space suit but when you are in space you float around inside of it.
Makes me sick seeing that beauty launched from shoulder height. Looks like a great time, but seriously guys, use a cradle. These 20lbers are likely over 20years old and deserve better treatment and respect. How you handle and release these monsters is sooo crucial to their survival, despite common thought, pike are not hardy, you guys probably killed 30% of the pike you "released". Lets make sure my son and your son get this experience too. You did hammer some beauts
Some fine trophy waters you have discovered! As you mentioned in your video, you kept your trophy fish for the wall. Good on you and your crew for doing that. I don't understand the negative posts, I think it is more for the jealousy than anything else. Be proud of what you guys have accomplished. It's not every day you see fish that size on one body of water.
You guys really should hire guides and get an idea of how its done. Its just a shame that the Sk government has seen fit to open up these areas to the "pork and bean" crowd.
damm ya take time to upload a video and folks have so much neg. you should just let those people live your lives for you... now wheres that river haha
dont bash people who keep fish. I fish for sport. what i keep i eat. Although I never keep large fish, because although the young are the fiture of most lakes, the large ones are the greatest spawners despite any risk for faulty eggs. I bet those 4 you kept would have produced several hundred healthy spawn.
also for everyone bitching, they only kept 4 fish, what if they kept them all? lol no room for them in the boat. stop being a bunch of communist douchebags trying to conform everyone to your buttfucking lifestyle
you guys def need to learn to handle big pike. you say no fish were hurt i saw plenty who prob wont live a month after your releasing them you guys are the type that give good fishermen bad names
If you look up "lindquistimages" on facebook, you come up with a location in Minnesota. It's not likely they caught these fish in Minnesota, but they're obviously not far from the great pike fishing in central and western Canada.
What's the point in bragging about the fishing, and how you caught and released so many (but still kept a few), and posting this video, if you're not going to tell anyone where it was shot?
wow what a waste. there's no need to keep fish that big with graphite and fiberglass replicas that last longer. you guys handle them like they're 24 inch hammer handles. they're big fish that need to be supported throughout their length, just like the other people on this thread have mentioned. You should know better. No lake that big south of the Canadian border gets left alone enough for trophies like that and up there it takes 20-30 years to grow a fish like that.
I can't believe you kept those big beauties!! Theres a lake where I live that had 30 pounders in it 20 years ago.. all the pike there now are 1-2 pounds cause of people like you guys!! let others enjoy those fish too! you said yourself they don't taste good when they are that big.. shameful.....
Wow... nice fish... also a nice display on how not to handle big pike, unfortunately... these animals are apex predators and you are tossing them around like panfish...
...and keeping 4 trophies 25 lb.+ at the end of the day... sorry, that is simply disgraceful...
There is a reason to take detailed pictures - good taxidermists can create exact replicas with good photos and no fish have to die.
Impressive spot you have there, can't say your group deserves it, however...

Nice fish but sad to see them handled like that. It looks like an old vid, hope you guys have evolved a little conservation wise. You should never net big pike, for starters. And all those big fish are the females, likely twenty years old or more. Keep a few to eat and let those big spawners lay eggs and pass on their genes.
You guys caught some trophy pike, props. But you should all be ashamed for the way you handled those beautiful pike. You were very fortunate for catching such nice fish, but man, you probably killed all of them. They're called trophies for a reason, treat them like trophies. You guys look like a bunch of stupid red necks. Show some class and respect for such nice fish! This video makes me sick!

Hanging fish vertical like that is bad for them. If you are going to weigh them , do it in a sling and subtract the weight of the sling. You have a few habits that could be improved on.
