Great video. I moved to SD in '98 for my freshman year at SDSU and my dorm mate from Jacksonville, FL loved taking us down to Blacks. Reminds me of the bigger-than-life days and those guys in the vid are soldiers. Lefts for all who dare!

Zach96789, I agree there should be more respect for somebody already on the peak. This pass winter as epic as it was, had more blatant drop ins, lack of respect and very little if any ettiquite. Don't mean to sound negative but surfing is so crowded these days, the vibe is more like driving on a southern California freeway. Thank God it's not like that at every session or I would quit surfing.

There is a nice right on big days that breaks like 20 feet out from the main break if you snuggle up to the south side of scripps. It tends to close out but if you get it early its a nice tube.

I don't know about that. I surfed there from 90' to 99', and surfed there at least twice a week when I could walk across the steet from the dorms. Back in '90 if someone burned you they would apologize and wouldn't do it again. It was actually friendly surfing there back then. By the time I moved to Santa Barbara, it was starting to get pretty disrespectful with burns left and right. 50 gentlemen is one hell of a stretch.

Yes. Blacks has especially thick waves and punching through is not possible. If you try, you'll get taken over the falls. The best thing to do is ride it out...just head towards the beach

I was out that day. Not at Blacks, but at 8th street in Del Mar. It was soooooooo gooooood. I was 15 then, and my board was a 5'7". It was D-O-H, but maybe T-O-H to me.

I was too young then, remember watching Lunada Bay when I was a kid that winter. I lived in SD for 7 years, 2 of them on campus at UCSD. The biggest I ever saw or surfed Blacks was 97-98. Quite a few days this size, one of which cleaved my 7' Marbella in half like a twig. If only Santa Barbara got this size when I lived there.
