If you want to live in a box don't let me stop you. I do agree US has a lot of excess of possessions but I I wouldn't trade my space for anything. You can't have an animal in those types of apartments and you pay probably 10x more than I do per sq. I pay 400 utilities included for an apartment in MN and it's 650sqft? If you're into city life than that's the spot for you but I'm a country gal.
