Man I first recall watching this anime way back in early 2001, I was about 9 or 10 in 4th grade at the time... It was midnight on a weekend & after turning off the PS2 (I was playing Dynasty Warriors 2) my TV was on CN & the 2nd half of episode 4 to 0080 was airing... That disturbed me quite a bit @_@
But having re-experienced the episode on the complete DVD set 10 years later... Not as much shock value, though the anime is still great regardless, so much better then Seed, Destiny & 00...

The later seasons of Justice League and several Batman TAS episodes are easily as nuanced and political as the average mecha series (remember for every Evangelion there's a G Gundam). Oh, please. Seed, Seed Destiny, and G Gundam fall *far* behind this one. Just because 0080 wasn't entirely action oriented doesn't make it a bad series. It's nice to see that the writers actually considered and developed how normal life could possibly play out in one of the Gundam universes, which is far more than I can say for any of the ones I mentioned earlier and even a few others. And the artwork was amazing.
No action? Any battle in 0080 was way better than any I've seen in G Gundam. There could have been more action but I've already said, it was not action oriented. It wasn't the main driving point.
That's like saying that Spirited Away is a terrible film because there's next to no action in it.
While a Zeon team attempts a suicide mission to destroy the new Gundam, a boy learns that war isn't so black and white with one of his friends on either side of the battle, killing each other. Now, compare that to, oh, I don't know, there's this guy trying to become the best fighter so he can save his brother from evil Gundam cells. Yeah.
@Agonysis Obviously you've only seen G Gundam in passing. The story is just as much about pain and loss as 0080. Domo has to fight his brother, loses his mother, his father is arrested for a crime he didn't commit, is betrayed by his mentor and forced into fighting and ultimately killing both him and his brother in a bid to save the world, and learn about self discipline, while discovering love from the one person who was always by his side. Compare that to 0080? Yeah, that's a tough one.
I have to admit I've never finished G Gundam and that I was dumbing it down to make emphasis and reduce size, but the point I was trying to make was that 0080 has a decent story for 6 episodes.
And I'm definitely not comparing either to Spirited Away. That was mentioned to prove that something doesn't need to be action oriented to be worthwhile entertainment.
I consider 0080 the best Gundam oriented show (and Zeta Gundam the best TV series). It packs quite some action, a lot of personal drama and shows the destruction it doesn't `spare' a realistic amount of civil casualties, true to the spirit of the other 80's shows (MS Gundam, Zeta, ZZ gundam, Char's CA).
But G-gundam is quite nice to... good characters, nice story, the right amount of drama. I didn't expected it, but I liked it. You just have to see past the mecha-DBZ theme.
Peter Cullen's voice-over work (music, too) always made the Toonami promos work for me. No sooner had he finished narrating one teaser, I just had to watch whatever Anime/Cartoon Toonami hyped up on their lineup...
I wish Gundam hadn't lost its popularity here in the States after Wing - the franchise has so many great series worth a look besides Wing/00.
@LuckySevenSamson all the shows ( UC ) in chronilogical order are Mobile suit Gundam, MS IGLOO, 08th MS team, Gundam War in the Pocket, Gundam Stardust Memory, Zeta Gundam, ZZ Gundam, Char's Counterattack, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam F91, and finally V Gundam. then spin offs like Wing gundam, G gundam, Gundam 00, and the dreaded SEED with its almost infinite continuations for some reason...
You know, if you're blocking out TV channels and raising the kids on Gundam, why not blame the TV on the high minovsky particle density around your house?
0080 has it's own unique charm that is completely independent from the other UC Gundam series. I would highly recommend it if you like a moving story in an OVA. This is not to say there is no action, but it's more story driven.
Awesome I prefer story thats why I liked 08th MS Team. If you haven't seen that one you need to it has been rated the best. Its like Gundam in Vietnam there GM's are weaker than the Zaku's so there is ground combat with Assault rifles and Anti-Tank Rockets. They have to set ambush's and the GM's break down do to Jungle/Dessert environment It's Awesome!
i could not believe how sad the end of that series was...i, like lots of others really miss this stuff. and yes, bring toonami back you dumbass Cartoon Network bitches, stop playing fucking "the office" and shit, thats what other stations are for!
Out of all the Gundam series that have ever played, this had more heart and soul to tear any other Gundam series up. If only the other gundam stories were as creative and inspiring and heart wrenching as this...

CN wants to be Nickolodeon. They can't make money off shows like Gundam and anime and WB stuff like Batman.
They want to make their own shows, like Spongebob for Nick. They want to be able to sell merchandise. CN was making so much money for Bandai and Hasbro. They want it to themselves now.
But they keep making shitty shows. At their rate, the channel might die to be honest. They're highest rated shows are still stuff like Pokemon/Beyblade Licensed stuff.
While Bernie died, to me, he did better than Chris in their duel. Chris didn't have battle experience but she'd been a Feddie for a while. Bernie, on the other hand, was a green rookie.
Also, the Alex was a much better MS than the FZ Zaku II. Despite that, Bernie still performed very well and basically destroyed the Alex despite getting killed himself.

And I'm definitely not comparing either to Spirited Away. That was mentioned to prove that something doesn't need to be action oriented to be worthwhile entertainment.

I consider 0080 the best Gundam oriented show (and Zeta Gundam the best TV series). It packs quite some action, a lot of personal drama and shows the destruction it doesn't `spare' a realistic amount of civil casualties, true to the spirit of the other 80's shows (MS Gundam, Zeta, ZZ gundam, Char's CA).
But G-gundam is quite nice to... good characters, nice story, the right amount of drama. I didn't expected it, but I liked it. You just have to see past the mecha-DBZ theme.

Peter Cullen's voice-over work (music, too) always made the Toonami promos work for me. No sooner had he finished narrating one teaser, I just had to watch whatever Anime/Cartoon Toonami hyped up on their lineup...
I wish Gundam hadn't lost its popularity here in the States after Wing - the franchise has so many great series worth a look besides Wing/00.

@LuckySevenSamson all the shows ( UC ) in chronilogical order are Mobile suit Gundam, MS IGLOO, 08th MS team, Gundam War in the Pocket, Gundam Stardust Memory, Zeta Gundam, ZZ Gundam, Char's Counterattack, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam F91, and finally V Gundam. then spin offs like Wing gundam, G gundam, Gundam 00, and the dreaded SEED with its almost infinite continuations for some reason...

0080 has it's own unique charm that is completely independent from the other UC Gundam series. I would highly recommend it if you like a moving story in an OVA. This is not to say there is no action, but it's more story driven.

Awesome I prefer story thats why I liked 08th MS Team. If you haven't seen that one you need to it has been rated the best. Its like Gundam in Vietnam there GM's are weaker than the Zaku's so there is ground combat with Assault rifles and Anti-Tank Rockets. They have to set ambush's and the GM's break down do to Jungle/Dessert environment It's Awesome!

CN wants to be Nickolodeon. They can't make money off shows like Gundam and anime and WB stuff like Batman.
They want to make their own shows, like Spongebob for Nick. They want to be able to sell merchandise. CN was making so much money for Bandai and Hasbro. They want it to themselves now.
But they keep making shitty shows. At their rate, the channel might die to be honest. They're highest rated shows are still stuff like Pokemon/Beyblade Licensed stuff.
They shoulda kept Toonami.

While Bernie died, to me, he did better than Chris in their duel. Chris didn't have battle experience but she'd been a Feddie for a while. Bernie, on the other hand, was a green rookie.
Also, the Alex was a much better MS than the FZ Zaku II. Despite that, Bernie still performed very well and basically destroyed the Alex despite getting killed himself.
