A penny back then easily had the value of a dollar these days. And Beethoven was composing this from the memory of being punished as a child losing a penny.
@gkollias14 Yes,that's right! And I was there - at Sala Mare Palatului.... it was great ! And Yes, may be Mr.Kissin was a little bit nervous at that concert, but he is always brilliant!!!
@Interessant11 Seriously though you literally urged people to butt into the conversation...and do you really think anyone is here watching this video is aiming to "belittle" Beethoven?
Dont really care whether you laughed or not. Other people got a chuckle out of it. Obviously each individual may have a different sense of humor so it would be impossible to please everyone. No need for you to be pompous over something so petty.
I'm glad that fate caused Beethoven to lose that penny that inspired him and gave him such feelings to write this music. Does anyone else think of Mr. Krabs from Spongebob?
@U2becommenter actually Beethoven didn't name it a rage over a lost penny. Beethoven didn't even finish the piece! He started it when he was twenty-five, but Diabelli finished it after he died. I'm not totally sure where the name got picked up from. interestingly enough, Beethoven was in Vienna when he began writing this piece (1795), and they did not have pennies at that point. The penny was minted in the U.S. in 1793, however Beethoven was already in Vienna at that time.
@hansbeimbam That would be Ms. Know-it-all, just so you know. And you are actually incorrect, as the original title was 'Rondo alla ingharese quasi un capriccio' - the title you claim was the 'original' is simply 'Rage over a lost penny' Translated into German. And even if that was the original title (which it's not), Beethoven did not name it that - his friend and secretary did, a man called Anton Schindler.
@Duckweed73 And as an extra tidbit, the title is still officially Rondo alla ingharese quasi un capriccio - the 'rage over lost penny' in whatever language you put it in, is simply a subtitle, a nickname.
@CanadianClassicals The main reason for that is because Diabelli, for goodness knows what reason, concealed the fact that he finished the piece, so it was not widely known that Beethoven didn't actually finish it. Another reason is that Beethoven still wrote a majority of the piece, Diabelli only finished it up. Beethoven is still the one that wrote the recurring rondo theme, that continues through the whole piece, so he (in my opinion) deserves the credit for at least the melody.
only Beethoven loses a penny and whilst in his rage he decides to compose a slightly aggressive composition. "oh ffs where has that penny gone!!? aah screw it il just compose a tune about my current anger over this lost penny and get 40000000 more pennies."
@T1carrus: What do you mean dubbed? This was recorded at a live performance. No dubbing at all. The recording itself isn't the best, but you can blame the Romanian sound engineer for that. Kissin does not need dubbing. Period.
I don't know where you hear "too many mistakes". This piece is very hard to play, I also tried it myself. And this version is brilliant and technically nearly perfect!
It would be hilarious if those two violinists near Kissin just totally forgot their manners and started stamping their feet to follow along with the rhythmn.
I agree that Kissin doesn't look very well, and I've always thought his hairdresser ought to be shot, but he's PLAYING very well, indeed -- as usual. And that's ALL that matters.
Cannot understand the preoccupation with the AUDIENCE. So what, and who cares?
Sorry to have to say it, but with very few exceptions the comments on this thread are either adolescent, idiotic -- or both.
The speed may be excessive, but he carries it off splendidly.
I'm pretty sure seryzu was referring to him having Aspergers or something, I've read Kissin has some sort of mental problem, but without he probably wouldn't be the badass he is now.
as Schumann said "difficult to find a funnier thing than this rarity!", this is a singular page fullfilled with vital authority and innocent strenghtness, a fine example of the beethovenian humor and we see an extraordinary interpretation by great Kissin, long live ludwig van
hmmm....i've never seen him wear white in a concert. wonder when he does. most of the videos of him here are of his promenade recital in London where he wore white.
