  • What a shit audience.

  • A penny back then easily had the value of a dollar these days. And Beethoven was composing this from the memory of being punished as a child losing a penny.

  • This is a much more mature rendition and not very so playful or vivid like the one in 1997 in the proms. Yet Yevgeny never lets you down in any case.

ps: This was filmed in the hall Sala Mare Palatului in Buchurest, the largest hall in Buchurest with a capacity of just over 4,000 people.

  • @gkollias14 Yes,that's right! And I was there - at Sala Mare Palatului.... it was great ! And Yes, may be Mr.Kissin was a little bit nervous at that concert, but he is always brilliant!!!

  • @Interessant11 Seriously though you literally urged people to butt into the conversation...and do you really think anyone is here watching this video is aiming to "belittle" Beethoven?

  • @Interessant11 "Let them step into defense then". But you're obviously a troll, so we're done here.

  • @Interessant11 Obviously he's not belittling Beethoven.

  • @Interessant11

Dont really care whether you laughed or not. Other people got a chuckle out of it. Obviously each individual may have a different sense of humor so it would be impossible to please everyone. No need for you to be pompous over something so petty.

  • @Interessant11

Well it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. Its clearly a joke.

  • TOOO FAAST!! omg

  • @loewenkohl yeah... thats Kissin for you. :)

  • from the side profile of kissin, he looks much older :(

  • It sounds as if Kissin was in the same mood as Beethoven when he'd lost his penny. I've heard nicer performances from Kissin of this rondo.

  • This isn't kissins greatest performance his 97 one was much better. Thumbs up if you agree

  • Beethoven must've been so outraged about losing his penny he decided, "Hey, why don't compose a song about this and make a million more pennies!"

  • @Exodus5589 Funny way to put it.

  • Four people do not have a penny :)

  • no one like like beethoven

  • I'm glad that fate caused Beethoven to lose that penny that inspired him and gave him such feelings to write this music. Does anyone else think of Mr. Krabs from Spongebob?

  • @U2becommenter actually Beethoven didn't name it a rage over a lost penny. Beethoven didn't even finish the piece! He started it when he was twenty-five, but Diabelli finished it after he died. I'm not totally sure where the name got picked up from. interestingly enough, Beethoven was in Vienna when he began writing this piece (1795), and they did not have pennies at that point. The penny was minted in the U.S. in 1793, however Beethoven was already in Vienna at that time.

  • @Duckweed73 actually the orginial title is "Wuth über den verlorenen Groschen", and Groschen was the austrian currency at this time, mr. know-it-all.

  • @hansbeimbam That would be Ms. Know-it-all, just so you know. And you are actually incorrect, as the original title was 'Rondo alla ingharese quasi un capriccio' - the title you claim was the 'original' is simply 'Rage over a lost penny' Translated into German. And even if that was the original title (which it's not), Beethoven did not name it that - his friend and secretary did, a man called Anton Schindler.

  • @Duckweed73 And as an extra tidbit, the title is still officially Rondo alla ingharese quasi un capriccio - the 'rage over lost penny' in whatever language you put it in, is simply a subtitle, a nickname.

  • @Duckweed73 Then why does Beethoven get the credit for the song and why not Diabelli?

  • @CanadianClassicals The main reason for that is because Diabelli, for goodness knows what reason, concealed the fact that he finished the piece, so it was not widely known that Beethoven didn't actually finish it. Another reason is that Beethoven still wrote a majority of the piece, Diabelli only finished it up. Beethoven is still the one that wrote the recurring rondo theme, that continues through the whole piece, so he (in my opinion) deserves the credit for at least the melody.

  • @Duckweed73 Thanks

  • How on earth does the audience look that bored? I was giggling the entire time!

  • @Nani101 To me, over half of them look pretty above themselves...

  • o.o omg. u can play faster than me. :O

T^T. u totally beaten me horribly. lol. your hair is bobbing up and down!!!

  • Comment removed

  • great i like to play like him...:-(((

  • Proof once again that Beethoven is the master of masters. And Kissin ain't no slouch, neither. :D

  • only Beethoven loses a penny and whilst in his rage he decides to compose a slightly aggressive composition. "oh ffs where has that penny gone!!? aah screw it il just compose a tune about my current anger over this lost penny and get 40000000 more pennies."

  • great tempo, i like it. right as it has to be. allegro vivace.

  • bit too fast....he is in a trance.......

  • bit too fast....he is in en trance.......

  • Is Kissin cursing? This would fit to this music!

  • All that over a penny? What if he lost a dollar?

  • @gott1rott There's Rachmaninoff for that

  • @gott1rott Either beethoven was poor or a penny worthed a lot at that time.

  • @gott1rott Pennies were worth a lot in earlier years.

  • @gott1rott oh how the wrath of god that would be dealt

  • oh my god!

    he´s become really ugly^^

  • @nachbargauer what?! He's beautiful! His music is beautiful... hehehe! ^_^

  • 4:45 SMIRKY BLERKY

  • man he is so good

  • Kissin has a fabulous sense of rhythm that really serves him well.

  • Remarkable performance. Thank you for posting.

  • @T1carrus: What do you mean dubbed? This was recorded at a live performance. No dubbing at all. The recording itself isn't the best, but you can blame the Romanian sound engineer for that. Kissin does not need dubbing. Period.

  • i really wanted to see the reaction of the crowd...

  • very poorly dubbed

  • He really makes you feel inadequate xD But I guess that someone has to be a prodigy from an early age.

On an other note, his hair is astounding.

  • I feel like I should be watching Tom and Jerry right now.

  • *you don't leave five minutes early.

  • @Laceangel1 If one has a chance to watch a virtuoso perform an amazing piece you don't

  • Oh no Kissin got very old than the london performance still great

  • at 1:20 why is that guy wearing shades?!

  • @1203456789 hmm could it be the fact that he's maybe blind?... stupid question

  • @1203456789

I wear my sunglasses at night so I can I can....

  • @1203456789 Maybe he's blind?

  • ...so fast

  • O...M...F....G!@!

  • This is incredible!! Fantastic!

  • Omg! He is so old compared to his London version in 1997

  • omg Kissin is such a freakin BAD ASS! end of story

  • This was 5:22 minutes to play. He played it ten years before (here on YouTube) and it was 5:22. That is truly amazing.

  • 1:06.

  • Piano seems a bit out of tune on the upper-mid range.

  • @sharingfeelings

    Sure, whatever you say butthead.

  • @sharing feelings-What are mistakes-is that what you are?, just sharing my feelings-silly rabbit

  • @sharingfeelings

I don't know where you hear "too many mistakes". This piece is very hard to play, I also tried it myself. And this version is brilliant and technically nearly perfect!

  • @sharingfeelings so you can play it better? :)

  • Ha ha, as does about 75% of north americans.

  • Im playing that now. Man I wish I could play it as good as he can. :P

  • half the crowd look uninterested, bored or about to fall asleep????????

by the way this guy rocks, aweome

  • i'm jealous of those two violinists sitting behind him... they had the best seat in the house....

  • That must of been some kind of special penny!

  • @markmcso7 haha! yeah most likely!

  • I didn't know Gene Shalit played the piano so well! =D

Looks better without the stache & glasses ;)

  • great dynamics..

  • It would be hilarious if those two violinists near Kissin just totally forgot their manners and started stamping their feet to follow along with the rhythmn.

  • Da fehlt aber was !!!

    Bei 0:22 !

  • Those two guys sitting behind Kissin are funny

  • GREAT MUSIC GREAT GUY GREAT EVERYTHING

Not trying to be mean, but he kind of looks like he's being electrocuted. I love it though, it makes him look more human.

    GREAT!

  • I agree that Kissin doesn't look very well, and I've always thought his hairdresser ought to be shot, but he's PLAYING very well, indeed -- as usual. And that's ALL that matters.

Cannot understand the preoccupation with the AUDIENCE. So what, and who cares?

Sorry to have to say it, but with very few exceptions the comments on this thread are either adolescent, idiotic -- or both.

The speed may be excessive, but he carries it off splendidly.

I don't think Beethoven ever referred to rage.

  • yould you maybe post the concerto as well? thanks!

  • I'm pretty sure seryzu was referring to him having Aspergers or something, I've read Kissin has some sort of mental problem, but without he probably wouldn't be the badass he is now.

  • WHY IS HE SMILING AT4:50

  • He wants to play as Kissin plays :)

  • i get the impression the rage component is less obvious in this performance

  • when you people understand that this piece is not a bout rage...

the name this piece has was not given to it by beethoven, so it does not matter...

  • He palys the same the recital in London in 1997

  • Kissin is getting fat.

  • It is because his medicaments!

  • Really? What medicaments?

  • キーシン大好き!!

    東京公演行きたかったなあ~

  • Its more like a speed-test than an interpretation.

    Well, he made the test.

  • damn... that was surely a rare penny... ^_^

  • LOL

  • as Schumann said "difficult to find a funnier thing than this rarity!", this is a singular page fullfilled with vital authority and innocent strenghtness, a fine example of the beethovenian humor and we see an extraordinary interpretation by great Kissin, long live ludwig van

  • As wonderful as before.

  • big comentary!

  • he plays this same piece 10 years ago much better, but it's very well=D!!

  • i agree with you...perfectly played...but...there is no interpretation...i really didn't shake my mind...

  • Fast, perfect but did it shake the mind?

  • Not perfect at all! TONS of flubs!

  • Comment removed

  • wow if i was this dude i whould have shot every asshole in the audience but any way he is great very soothing :)

  • i'd shoot the violinists behind him too, who are noticeably annoyed.

  • he's a jealous bastard... almost as jealous as me lmao i REALLY wish i could play like that

  • r they being paid to sit there during an encore?

  • where is he running?

  • One of the few performances I've seen where he isn't wearing his white tux.

  • hmmm....i've never seen him wear white in a concert. wonder when he does. most of the videos of him here are of his promenade recital in London where he wore white.

  • Wow this performance is almost a whole minute faster than his other interpretation

  • No the one in which he wore white tux includes his words of introduction and the audience's ovation, so that it's longer. The speed is the same. Just that this time he made more mistakes.

  • oh sorry then

  • He has certainly changed over the years, but not for the better. However, his technique is as sharp as ever! I like this interpretation, but it feels way too rushed, even for this piece.

  • Come on man. Maybe he is not the best pianist, but he is one of the best. How dare you calling him idiot?

  • The people in the audience look so stuck up. I hope that when I never end up looking like that.

    He's a great piano player

  • Yere, unfortunatley that's what puts many people off classical music and its when you see an appearingly stuck up audience like in this vid that you are not surpirsed why they say classical music is for posh people. A shame really.

  • Look how he's worked up that double cheek! He doesn't look healthy at all :(

  • Some of the notes seemed a bit out of tune, but nonetheless a great performance! :)

    Evgeny Kissin my favorite!

  • i tell you secret, hes a machine

  • I thought he's an alien ;o)

  • anybody think kissin s getting fatter? especially the jaw.....OTL......I v been watching him for 22 years and he finally gets fat....he used to be so tiny...

anyway good performan and very bright, kissin will always be my sunshine boy

  • I prefer his CD recording of this... he makes too many mistakes because he isn't focused enough.. but nobody would be inspired to play for this crowd I guess... did somebody die in there?

  • i was there in that 'crowd' =)) well the concert was really awfull:) sorry to say that but he had dissapointed all of us. I don't remember when, but while he was performing the Emperor he had broken one string :D it was really a stupid moment. And yes. I hate those people who sleep while the artist is perforimg something . omg. hate this:P

  • How is that his fault? Back in the days of shittier pianos, Beethoven would break literally dozens of strings in a performance. If anything, breaking a string is sort of something to brag about these days. But yes, that crowd is hilariously uptight-looking. 1:20 is the best shot. The one guy asleep, the geezer with shades, a woman fanning herself! Where are we, 18th-century Vienna?

  • 18th century Vienna would be livelier for that matter.. I don't think Beethoven would be too happy with this audience x) oh and anyone who can play the Rondo op.129 at this tempo with perfect technique and not have their hands fall off at the end deserves better than this

  • A typical brilliant performance by Kissin. He really is great. But what a bunch of dour and sour mugs in the audience. It looks like a zombie movie. The only one who seems to be enjoying the performance is the violinist behind him and to the right. At least somebody remembers how to smile.

  • was the an out of tune note like D sharp? at 2:36 I didn't here it was out of tune

  • Strepitoso!!

  • ACH!!! DOES ANYBODY HEAR THAT NOTE GO OUT OF TUNE?!?!?

    Excellent interpretation...:D

  • Yes, it´s in 2:36 I think... Right? D sharp?

  • Yep...I'm suprised no one has caught that. I don't know if it is D-sharp or E-flat...I think its E-flat.

  • It's D#, not Eb, because of the key signature. Remember the key signature in this song switches to E major at one point.

  • It snot a song its piano music-

  • It is a song comprised of piano music. There may not be lyrics but that does not mean this piece doesn't speak. Was your comment really necessary?

  • As a matter of fact it is necessary.....

  • LMAO what the hell!? "it snot a song"? LOL thumbs up to that.

  • He is a my favourite pianist! Great performance!

  • you have to admit he definitely looks older than in most of the videos of him..oh, well, it doesn't matter: it's brilliant piano playing.

  • Something falls down right next to him at 0 18

  • he plays really fast, he looks like he's not enjoying it like in klaverdaja's video.

  • Lovely piece, boring audience.

  • he is so great

  • Jeeze lighten up with the age thing...He was born Oct.10, 1971...He is most likely getting this "old" crap because he started at 6 and we have seen his "baby face for years...You better hope you look this good at 36. His playing is brilliant and will just get better with age.

  • hes getting old... but still has a formidable technique

  • a man in his 30s is old? you are 12, i guess?

  • he is 37 almost 40..

  • you know that at this concert he broke a string ? :)

  • looks like he is alot fatter than the last time i saw him ... like 5 years ago.

  • In addition to his prodigious techique and musicality, Kissin seems to convey the desire to please his audience. Too many others seemed so into themselves.

    I like this performance.

  • Is Kissin a little bit fatter?...

  • 1:18 The bitch in the back is fanning herself! I want to go over there and slap her!

  • LOL, im gonna seriously find out who she is. I'll get her don't worry.

  • Thanks! =D

  • hey man why you calling her a bitch

  • i prefer his other interpretation..

  • i agree.. but since this was an encore, i kinda understand, if he was abit out of focus

  • his technique is down since proms..maybe he hasn't been practicing this piece.

  • are you serious? He's shredding the fck outta that piano!

  • Such a talent! He plays with such aggressive emotion; which is meant for this type of piece! haha :) Look at him whizz with all these notes.

  • wow he really likes that rage over the penny . look at him go lol.
