i sang this song when i was a kid at a talent show for two straight years ... AND I WON BOTH THE YEARS.. the judges would always be in tears by the end of the song ... even i couldnt control myself the second year... this song brings back memories.... :-( :-(
Unfortunely this song pertains to a lot kids anymore , Isn't it sad that children are our future and nobody seems to care anymore about them. God help them and us.
Hank was a very close mmeber of my family! Not by blood, but he called my Grandmother "Mother", and my mom was a rodeo singer on thr Calgary Stampeed and met Hank, as he was from nova Scotia!! I am from NaSHVILLE, as Hank lived htere and helped my Canadian mom move there!! My Mother sang with Hank!!
The first time I heard this song was in the late 50's and it was sung to me by a little blind girl. Since then I have heard it sung by a number of singers but Hank Snow's version beats them all.
This song and Mary Across The Wild Moor was two of my dads favorite songs. I was only 7 years old but dad would get me to sing these songs for him. I think i knew every song that Hank sang and still do. You never forget the good things.
I REMEMBER PLAYING THIS SONG IN THE FIFTIES ON THE OL' RCA VICTOR CRANK UP RECORD PLAYER . IT MOVED ME THEN AND IT STILL DOES. SURE BRINGS BACK MEMORIES. HANK SNOW IS THE GREATEST.
TANGCHOSUN 1, IF IT WAS RELEASED IN 1070 THEN THOMAS TALLIS WOULD PROBABLY HAVE DONE A GROOVY COVER VERSION 500 YRS LATER! AS IT 'APPENS (GUYS AND GALS), THIS SONG WAS FIRST RECORDED IN 1949 BY THE GREAT MAN HERE (HE DID NOT WRITE IT, HOWEVER) - SO PENDAWS WOULD INDEED HAVE HEARD IT 55 YEARS AGO.
That's right. I remember listening to a record of Hank doing this song way back, when I was a little kid. It was also issued on a 45 rpm years later, which is what I played on my mother's stereo.
I can relate to this song, I was an orphan child at the age of five until I was Eight yerar old. I'am now sixty seven years young and still find that hard to bear .
Tony sheridan pete best and Paul Mccartney made a great blues r n r cut of this song 1961 in hamburg, one of my favourite songs as far as the beatles are concerned, but my main man hank makes a good version too
hey rinkrude1 go for it . I sing alot of old clasic country and bluegrass music in a local bar where most of the people dont know snow or haggard or flatt and scruggs and you would be supprised at how much they enjoy it . so dont frett
Hank Snow , as from Nova Scotia, but , I believe , he wrote this song , for all Children lost in a watr, when he was young & for the Lads , from N.F.L. & yes those to from Nova Scotia.. Whose Fathers went to war & only out of all the Canadian Regiments , only 1/3 returned .. Many children in the Mritines were left Fatrherless, but , he also saw many ob=verseas left the same way ... IT IS A SONG MANY CANADIANS , carry in their Backbacks todoat , no-matter where they Serve !!!
I spent a lot of time growing up in foster care, so I was a natural to play and sing this one. One difference though is that I rewrote the lyrics so it had a happy ending. I will post my version some-day...it's on my bucket list.
Wow I can't believe this song is on here!!My Grandfather used to sing this to me when I was young. It always used to make me cry and I felt bad for the child. Thanks for posting this.
Just one of the greatest country singers who ever lived, a Canadian boy famous around the world ,absolutely as good as it gets,way to go ,Hank,a great rendition of a great song !!!!
You might of been brought up in an orpanage, Get a life, you are the dickhead. Hank Snow was one of the greatest country singers that ever lived. It is because you don't know anything about country music. Hank Snow didn't have a bad bone in his body. He cared abouty people like you.
My dad used to sing this song too when I was a child, He added a verse on the end of the song where the boy got adopted by the narrator. I love this song! ;_;

My dad sang this to us, when he played the guitar when we were very young. He sang it the best. RIP Dad.

What a credit this man was to traditional country music. I would rate among the founders of true Country, he certainly could sing that style.
