The odd part is while it doesn't sound like he tuned his guitar, the music still conveys as much sadness and disconnection as his soft vocals. Fascinating.
Nice party music if you don't like your party guests and want them to leave. I've listened to a few Jandek, er, "songs" from his extensive catalog, and while it is tempting to say that the guy has no talent whatsoever, I think he does have some talent. I mean I'd have to really work HARD to make my guitar sound as f-ed up and seriously atonal as that. Even if it *were* way out of tune.
I can understand the idea that listening to this music gives the impression of a lack of guitar talent on the part of the musician (I personally don't know anything about him; this is the first song I've heard by him). I urge you who are of this opinion to listen to "Evening Bell," or "Peon" by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, and consider the enormous amount of guitar talent it takes to make music that sounds so off. Also, I think this piece by Jandek is just wonderful.
what would Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band have to do with Jandek? not sayin either is bad, im listening to Evening Bell for the first time as i type this and really love it
On the Jandek documentary, Jandek hints that he tunes his guitar a certain, unique way. If you listen to his music with headphones, you will find he has a unique way of playing the guitar. His music is not for most people.
I don't have trouble listening to outsider music. But then again, I didn't turn the sound down when I was watching a movie about a Messiah healing suiciders with harsh noise (if anyone is interested, it's called My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me)...
If toastedkash is right and he really is just playing some random shit and singing lyrics to it, then I have to praise Jandek for making this random shit sound really cool and interesting.
There's a difference between dissonance and being "awful". He's incredibly good at what he does (and checking out one song isn't enough). Not understanding something is not grounds for putting it down.
@pulsedemon ive looked at more songs, and he may be good at what he does but i dont see what he is good at. It sounds like he is just playing some random shit and singing lyrics to it.
Well, that's basically the common ground I was attempting to reach. Some people find his guitar playing very musical and said lyrics very poetic. Since he's never really stated his "artistic motives", if you will, your comment is as valid as any.
But it isn't awful. Nickelback would have to cover the song before it was truly deserving of that title.
@pulsedemon lool point taken its not as bad as nickleback. i guess what i hear as 'awful' is different to what you hear 'dissonance'. just like someone who actually thinks nickleback are good, even though you can never take whoever says that seriously.
This video was really perfect for the song. I enjoyed it. Maybe it was just the film stock/camera work but it reminded me of cool seventies movies like Logan's Run and The French Connection.
Interesting guy. More power to him. But sheesh....tough listening, no doubt. Saw that documentary about him. Worth checking out for sure. But again.... 60 some albums at this point?!?! wow....you REALLY got be a fan over super personal deep, dark, depressed, isolated, ramblings that are out of tune to get into his world. Not that any thing's wrong with that;)
What balls it all is. A little mystique combined with rejection of traditional musical theory and an inability to sing and boom people say he's a genius.
He's just a shy, creative man who liked to write and record his own tunes. That's cool and all, but really; when my little sister was six she used to randomly strum my guitar and chant nonsense. It sounded exactly like Jandek.
are people fucking serious? I always say Britney sucks balls and that it isn't music. but this? this is just noise. my ears are bleeding..literally. please stop putting out this GARBAGE.
Jandek is the most sensitve and courageous performer out there today. No one else has the guts to record what their death should sound like. Contemplate this upon the Tree of Woe.
I just got a series of really weird phone calls from a guy named Sterling R Smith. He asked "Who the fuck [I was.]" Then started to narrate words and told me to write them down. "I heard the call on feathered drums, oh universe, oh time untold..." I did and googled it. He called me back and I mentioned Jandek and he said, "You've heard my music?" Then he told me to look up "Put my Dreams on this Planet." Anyone know whats the deal with this guy? It freaked me out a bit. E-mail me please.
Dude, the idea that jandek would randomly call people, ramble some of his lyrics, and hope that they would take it seriously is without a doubt a lie. It's so blatantly a lie, it's as though you are explicitly telling us, "I made this up". Were you joking?
Look man, I don't care if you believe me or not. I'm not writing this down to brag because frankly I think his music sucks. Yes it was really weird. I thought it was someone just fucking with me at first so I was laughing and joking around. I was just asking cause I was freaked out and thought maybe he did this to other people too. Besides, if I lied wouldn't I make up a more exciting story? From what I've read, he doesn't come out much. Guys get there name out there some way or another.
In the event that what you recite here is true, you should take the opportunity to converse with him. Unusual though Mr. Smith may seem, I get the impression that he's a very intelligent and interesting person, and he's arguably one of the finest lyricists in rock-'n'roll.
I personally think that his music rawks-it's twisted, over-the-edge-and cool as it gets.
There are people all over the world who would love to be in your shoes, if Mr. Smith really is telephoning you.
I've talked with him, a bit. I did give him my number, though - not a "random" sort of thing. The calls stopped several years ago, and I thought he had died.
