  • @maynardsgaylover its on your asshole

  • @Damien333 Really??? I thought I felt something back there.......

  • I could live 100 more years and never be half as cool or poetic or poignantly simple as this man! I wish him and Johnny Cash could have done something together.

  • He's his OWN genre of music, entirely.

  • I don't believe in God, but I believe in Tom.

  • Angel with devils voice

  • WAAAAAAOOOUUWWWWW!!!

  • Here's the difference between Tom Waits and everyone else.

    Everyone else peaked.

Bob Dylan had a few peaks, sure - through the sixties, then with Blood on the Tracks/Desire...then again with Oh Mercy...Time out of Mind...Love and Theft, the last few albums actually.

    Paul Simon peaked with Graceland.

I could go through over and over again with everyone - but Tom NEVER peaked anywhere. He just hit a plateau that he never came down from and hopefully never shall.

  • This performance blows me away. I like many different artists. Why would I want to put them in any kind of ratable order?

  • That's an interesting Cigar Box Banjo there. Anyone interested in cigar box instruments should check out the plans and discussions at cigarboxnation(.)com - a great site, and epicentre of the online cigar box guitar community.

  • Brillant Man !!!!

  • ive come out to stir you up 'cause you're bad ass dude , tom waits is pretty good, and bob dylan left jesus to seculiarism, and the beatles are gay, and the stone's are addicted to bennies and mollies and thats total downville if yer' groovy enough to catch me 'cause i'm so deep

  • i never noticed it before but tom waits have a big lower lip.

  • id like to see one video on youtube without an arguement in its comment box. Original provoker your a cock. Person who toke the bait dont feed the trolls people are intitled to theier opinions.

  • battle-you are so fukin right and I hope everyone listens!Be it Waits,Dead,SCI,Garcia...these trolls come out to stir up shit

  • they don't give a shit about the music. They only get off by pissing others off. They are sad, parasitic clowns without a life but we are the ones that give their lives meaning.

  • Come on.....expand your music library. Tom is very talented. The crap that is out there today is very violent. Most young adutls listen to death, drugs, rape, you name it. So let Tom stand on the corner, if someone comes up and wants to take him away, I will gladly follow them and Tom. Gonna be a sad day when he passes.

  • @notonpage7

What are you on about? Songs being about death and drugs and rape can be really good. Half of Tom Waits songs are about the nasty side of life!

  • The truth is always ugly

  • marvy1118 you should be shot for saying that.

  • you're joking right :D Tasteless person you are!

  • No - really, I'm serious. 40 years ago he'd be forcefully taken off the sidewalk and given padded restraints while being given a psych eval.

  • Well, i'm glad to be living 40 years later then, whereas now i can listen to this adorable man :)

  • Have you seen the 'Tom Waits Cookie Monster' video on YouTube? It's insanely funny. Even fans of TW like it.

  • So would every other artist who thinks outside the box. Go listen to your pop music.

  • Are you some sad person who never gets laid? poor guy.......you will never understand. What are you doing watching this anyway? Don't you have some gay porn downloading or something.

  • It's worthwhile with Tom Waits to wade through a lot of material. Some of it will be excellent. Enough of it, in fact, to put him up there with Bob Dylan in the lyric category. You're not going to like it all but you'll love some. You'll love enough of them that over time, you'll only hold a few atists in the same esteem.

  • what da ya say we just go off and whaaa ohhhh......

  • So honesty great

  • Brutal.......Torcherous........But strangely satisfying ?????

  • Tom waits is the thing - thats the thing

  • first in = it

  • When the artist feels the pain, and lets it go through you, when he catches the feeling and tries to keep in in the room, well, Tom succeed of coursely, and he is succesful mutch more frequently then most of the others.

    THIS IS ART.

  • the guys a great artistactor & singer & probably alot of other things.

he gives it everything he's got i sometines cant weigh him up but i love him. i love the performance

  • God, how does he sing like that? He looks like it pains him....

  • pack a day for 20 years

  • concentration or how you spell it :D

  • It's not pain, it's passion.

He's an incredibley beautiful man. Inside and Out.

  • the word "passion" comes from the latin "patior" which means "to suffer"

  • ... just - so cool

  • Gritty, Dirty, Lonely, Raw, Beautiful. I hope Tom never stops working his magic.

  • @eboteilho no doubt!!!!!!!

  • what's this track off of?

  • "Real Gone", 2004.

  • thank ya

  • Best fucking album this decade.

  • W-O-W

  • The more I hear this song the moar I love it!

  • oh, i didnt want to post it

  • What a beautiful-beautiful-beautiful song!!

So much passion and feeling, raw emotion open like a wound.

I am so thankful for Tom Waits!!!

  • You're a dick emilydeboer... sorry but it must be told

  • It took me a couple listens before I got it, now I'm hooked...

  • Thats the thing with this guy or with any good stuff of this world... if u pay close attention into things you realize them better!

  • LOOK PEOPLE.. IF YOU DON'T THINK WAITS CAN SING... LISTEN TO "Tom Waits - Poncho's Lament".

(I just uploaded it to keep you people happy.)

I'm not a view whore or a sub whore, just a fan.

  • Hello,people!! Rain Dogs!

  • Absolutely love this song and most of what Waits records. My partner, who has very particular tastes, asked to borrow a Waits's CD after a drive n my car this morning. Waits combines so many artists and genres that its hard to classify him. He's a man on his own. My partner suggested jazz, blues, etc., and I couldn't place him. He's everything.

  • I fucking loooove this, makes me go nuts, in a good way ;)

May you live for friggin ever Tommy!!!!

  • Check the reather large series of youtube videos of tom at rockpalast...I think there are over ten of them..of course start at the first one...Really extraordinary.

  • I commend your vocabulary, yet I disagree with your "ass"ertions! Hey, the next time you sense one of those horrendous, heinous farts coming on, would you tape it and upload it? Thanks!

  • Waits is a lyrical artist, a poet, not a singer. Enjoy him for what he offers.

  • that's total bullshit! i've seen him live.. he sings fantastic! powerfull, yet he hits every note perfectly...

  • Tom waits has still got it!

  • He's plsying right now, this second in Edinburgh. Man....I wish I was there.

  • I´m speechless!

  • agree

  • NO ONE... Repeat... NO ONE is better at being Tom Waits than Tom Waits. Alison Krauss and that bozo from Dead Zep (who stole all their music from those who came before them, like he and Allison are doing now) don't hold a candle to ANY version by Tom Waits. To even suggest that they are better is utterly preposterous!

  • You don't really think artists like Plant and Krause actually "steal" music from musicians like Tom Waits, do you? Tom's got fine royalties coming which I am sure he's very thankful for.

Tom Waits is pretty cool, but really all his music is based on styles which were developed and pioneered by musicians before him just as much as Led Zep or any other artist...

  • You'r right about Kruass and Plant, but Waits style can't be compared with Zep, it's unique.

  • Tom Waits has several times brought lawsuits against people who used his songs without permission! In other words, rpak didn't "steal" anything. They were given permission and it would be a sad musical scene if only the writer of a song would be allowed to perform said song! And though it's a matter of taste, not fact, and I am a big Tom waits fan ( one of the greatest songwriters), I'd like to go on record here and say "yes, I AM that preposterous and like Krauss' version better!"

  • alison krauss sings the song way better

  • It's like comparing apples and oranges. Both are doing a great job.

  • IMHO waits has a theatrical feeling in his performance and a great deal of insanity but he can t sing..Alison krauss's version has a more musical approach, so i'd agree with you

  • "he can t sing"

    I stopped reading here.

  • so who do you suggest a as a good singer? Nick Cave? or celine dion? Listen...Tom waits is more about music...he is an artist. Mick jagger is a singer and musician...Jeniffer Lopez is singer...she just sings...Pavarotti is a singer as well. Tom waits is beyond that...this guy is more about communicating with the darkest parts of your soul and unveil something to you that you never thought you cuold dicover in your self...his music is more like alchemy..if cant understand that ..dont judge him!

  • obviously i can since i am a fan..but all this "communicating with the darkest parts of your soul and unveil something to you that you never thought you could dicover in your self" seems kinda corny to me...A agree that Tom is unique and is more of an artist rather than musician. I didn t say he s not a good artist, quite the opposite.

  • I recommend a re-listen to Mule Variations...then think about whether TOm is a musician or not.

  • I don't really think that singing should be considered only as a technical performance, I think that it should be a way to express feelings and sensations. In that case Waits is a perfect singer, much better that many other artists that use a "better" voice to give you...basically nothing.

    However, Respect! :D

  • I like it, but I like the album version better. Tom Waits uses his voice in much more varied ways on his studio albums, but more often than not just croaks in performances. This tune really needs that long high 'haaaaaaaa-aaah' part.

  • I first heard the Alison Krauss version here on you tube, and some people badmouthed the tom waits version, but I needed to see for myself. I think this is great! What the heck were those people talking about. It's so unique but soulful. Alison Krauss prettied it up beautifully, but I enjoy the raw just as much!

  • i really dig the shoe box guitar... hes amazing and has an amazing band

  • Just thought you might like to know... in the album its credited as a "cigar box banjo" played by Marc Ribot. If that helps?

  • This is amazing. Never seen anything like it!

  • Neither have I. Tom Waits has his own genre.

  • cigar box guitars or didley bo's were used in the 1800's. Many blues musicians learned on these because they were inexpensive. Check out their history and they make some pretty nice sounding and looking ones online.

  • Oh, I'm not interested in acquiring one. ^_^

Thanks for the information, though. I'd not known they existed.

  • Alison Krauss's version of this from Raising Sand is so unbelievable to think he wrote it..she really is that inner voice of his made literal. One great talent complimenting another..excellent

  • always fantastic... l love this man, and hope I'll feel this alive...

  • This guy is a magician - he keeps changing the color of the microphone from silver to black and back again!

  • (He does it with a compartment inside his hat)

  • This is so fucking cool.

  • monster from The Goonies, anybody?

  • 100 dollar ticket. ugh.

  • Okay about Scarlett Johannson...I get this one!!! FUNNY!!!

  • I no longer remember why you were crying. Maybe just because, of the sadness of sunsets.

Or, maybe of longing and of kindness. I no longer remember why you were crying.

  • So hot!

  • crazeee

  • scary shit

  • My knees do that sometimes, too. I think it's the rain.
