Richard Manuel was the true soul of the group . Just listen to the commitment of his blues style on this track. The road took him from us . I miss his voice . That's why I got out early . I will always appreciate funk and blues .
This is the dirtiest, funkiest, tightest, harshest, most gutteral go-for-broke, whiskey-and-cigarettes voice I've ever heard come out of Richard... or anyone period. Fucking amazing.... I truly wish I was born with this God-given talent. To think, this was before they even became The Band!
Marie Adams did the original version for Peacock Records in 1952.Bobby Bland covered the song in 1963 for Duke / Peacock. That's Richard Manuel on lead vocals for this version.

Such great voice! No one else compares that I can think of except maybe the young Stevie Winwood (Gimme Some Lovin').
