Same here. I think that while it'll l be very hard for it to spread outside of the alternative music genres (metal and punk) but I do think that it should pervade metal past the metalcore lot. Unfortunately, while we have people like Chris Barnes in the scene, encouraging and attempting to legitimise marijuana use, and of course the drinking, we're unlikely to see a sXe death metal band :(
i think legalizing weed would be a good thing' less crime and the government would actually make money off it rather than spending millions sorting out the problems it now causes, it is after all a plant which we should have the right to use or not

Frankly I just need to see the streets after dark and some of the kids off their faces after having more than a skin full, to hope that more people follow the XXX. I think you'll find a lot of straight edgers in their 40's from the first wave (Minor Threat, 7Seconds,Bad Religion,All, Descendents,etc.) I'm not sXe (I enjoy coffee and tea and occasionally wine) but the point is about being in control of youself as opposed to being under the control of something else.

Beacuse I chose to say no to everything. I do trust my will power, its actually very strong. I just have no want or inclination to go near these things, at the very basic level, I dont like the tatse of alcohol, Smoking is disgusting and vile and having asthma why would I want to make that worse? and doing drugs is selfish and moronic and I don't need any of these to 'enhance' my life. But for me it much more than those basics. Anyways, whats your problem? Worry about your choices, not ours.

Actually Ella is right, Teen Idles were an early landmark of Straight edge and the DC hardcore scene and members Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson who later went on to form Minor Threat, still preached a stay clean ethic which then through minor threat was coined as straight edge.
it is right to say that we arent conforming, in the sense that we do not go along with the mainstream of young people who have an opposing lifestyle.

Interesting..........., I know this is probably more revolutionary in Europe where drinking is almost expected. I grew up in the DC suburbs probably 6 or 7 years after minor threat in a town called Reston, VA. We would have shows called Jam for Man. People had to donate a can foods item for the homeless to get in. I always thought that was fun, you could go to the show and feel like you were helping the homeless. It is interesting to see people getting involved in different causes nowadays.
