  • beautifully done! I sang this in my choir one year, and it was so challenging. I've always wondered how it would sound with instruments. Yet somehow, as I listen to this now, it sounds like the instruments are singing words (and not because I sang it before, I actually forgot the words lol). Very ethereal...

  • i love this song! we're playing it and band and it maybe be hella easy but this shiz legit brought me close to tears. loves every part of it.

  • This is the exact version that I heard when I did the OMEA District 5 Honors Band in fall of 2008 at Stambaugh Auditorium. But I thought Lux Aurumque was a more exciting piece. It may jus be faulty listing on the CD case. I thought this was "Alleluia, Laudamus Te"

  • my marching band is playing this for our ballad and its absolutely gorgeous :D

  • Nice but the 07 Viriginia All State Concert band is more musical and balanced.

  • trumpet entrances are always hard to hit perfectly with this song ;-)

  • i played that yesturday in the 4a region band i loved that song

  • our band just got this piece today and it sounds beautiful

  • this is so cool!!! I looked at the name of the vid and before clicking, i said to myself, "There is no possible way this could be as good as choral version." I was wrong :)

  • Never heard this in instrumental form, sang it once. It was a bitch to learn and execute correctly. All the same notes plus correct enunciation of Latin.

  • our wind orchestra just played it at school. wish i couldve gotten a recording they played it flawlessly!

  • The Climax is not extreme enough for me. The climax needs to be like the heavens opened up and the angels were singing, the light is glorious, and everything is just overwhelmingly beautiful. After all Lux Arumque means light and gold.

  • I compeletely agree. Our high school band is playing this right now and when we play the climax, we play it LOUD, but not to where it's all out of tune. It's strong & confident. Not all sweet like this one. But it's still a really good band. Good job. :)

  • I would say that the chord at the climax needs to have depth rather than volume. If it has a strong bottom and everything lines up regarding intonation, you will get that extreme feeling you are looking for. This was one of our band directors' favorite pieces and he passed away two summers ago - so we play it in memory of him. The emotion we put into this piece is unbelievable and truly heart-warming.

  • I agree with you 100 percent; they NEED more bass/tenor voice at the climax. You cannot hear when the first low "f" (first note of climax) is played, which is the whole point of the piece. I play bassoon for my high school wind ensemble, and we performed this piece last year, and it brought me to tears every time we played it. This didn't. It sounds like clarinets have pitch discrepancies, and their volume at the end is simply too loud for this piece. The end should be the gold, not the light.

  • I second that motion, we completely picked up the volume when we played this, it was so freaking epic. It stunned the audience they were speechless

  • The oboe solo at the beginning wasn't...very...good.

  • Well... haha. The pitch.

  • I also think there could have been more of a crescendo from the trills into the climax to make it the true climax of the song. decrescendo on trills then crescendo into the chords

  • we're playing this right now in band, and i'm not gonna diss on the entrances, it's hard to get them perfect. especially with a deaf saxophone that sits next to me, she always plays really flat

  • saxophone isn't deaf lol, the girl that plays is

  • haha she probably thinks you're sharp

  • welcome to the relam of imperfection. I know exactly what you mean.. haha :P

  • There should have been WAY more sound from the half note and whole note poeple at 1:58. Thats what makes that part of the song so amazing, and its probably just the recording device, because I've listened to OSU play other songs and they've sounded great.

  • This is the Honor Band, for high schoolers.

  • Although I played trumpet on this piece and it is pretty hard to get that note out, it's not that hard!

  • holy s... at the trumpets dont know if it was sq or not but god bless that was disturbing

  • The french horn soloist sounds amazing. We played this in my high school varsity band last year. It was an amazing piece. Its amazing how hard something as simple as whole notes could be. I was was first frnch horn on this myself.

  • this really is not a good performance or audio quality of this song. The wood winds are flat nearly the whole piece especially in the beggining. Nice try but no.

  • Agreed.

  • mannnn.. i can't wait untill jan. 30th. Since i got accepted to the osu high school honors band =]

  • Thye ballad for our marching band this was based on this. Search for GRC 2008 regionals if you want to check it out.

  • yes but not after a 6 hour rehearsal on this piece and 5 others like I just had.

  • i play trumpet.... i love playing the high g and a at 'C' its so.... fun hahaa. any other trumpet knows what im talking about.

  • Comment removed

  • woooo haha yeeeaaahhh

  • i love this song! im playing it this year in my schools wind ensemble (Bb Bass Clarinet)

it took me forever to get a good-sounding vibrato, and now i get to show it off :)

i lold watching my friend who got 1st clar freak out when he saw the 13 1/2 measure A

  • WOOT!

Go Bass Clarinet!! (I play both Bass and Normal)

I play 1st chair Bb Clarinet during this song at my school. It's awesome.

  • i cant for the life of me get a better than mediocre sound out of the normal soprano clarinet :)

i play the Bb Bass clar and the Eb Contra-alto at my school. i like the contra better, i think it has a better sound, and its louder, and its fun to be as low as a tuba hehe. but since im the only bass player in my school's wind ensemble, im kinda needed on the bass too

  • You do realize that No instrument in the clarinet family is a vibrato instrument....Its not to be used in a concert/symphony setting. Jazz and soloing it is sometimes exceptional...but yeah. Just a warning. If I was your teacher and heard vibrato id probably be furious lol

  • We are playing this song also! The really long A can sound nice as long as it stays in tune considering it is the worst note to play on a Bb clarinet.

  • Eh, an A or Bb on the clarinet just...ugh, it just sucks playing those notes. Throat tones = FML moments.

  • i know what you mean. hahaha they suuuck

  • i loveeeeeeee this song :)

& i got to hold the lovely 45643425643 measure long note at the end of the piece when i played it, too. wooo.

  • my favorite piece ever.

  • i love the build up in the middle and the chord at 0:54. This makes me wanna get back in band.

  • The choral version is so much better for me but this is a really great recording of it. I absolutely love the C. I sang it earlier this year and it's my favorite piece ever.

  • We just finished playing this at a festival in Banff, Alberta. We did a pretty good job.

  • My concert band is performing this for our spring concert. When i get the recording i'll be sure to post it. Im sure it won't be half as good as this though.

  • This song is so exposed. I swear I want to kill the saxophones when they play too early or too late. But when a good band plays this, it's amazing.

  • Are you that impatient that you can't wait for a comment to load before you post it twice? Geez!

  • wait, why does this one have a -2 score when the other one that u posted has a +2 score??? just wondering...

  • my band of 160 people performed it this year, and for grade 11 and 12 students, we were told we were amazing...yet again we are drilled and practice for hours on end each week, so we should be good! If i can find a recording, i'll upload it, but seriously, when my band got to C, i swore the stage was going to explode...this recording isn't nearly as dramatic as my band. Go Markham!

  • The recording really kills what the true effect was when we played it... plus, we only practiced for two days so I thought it turned out pretty good for only playing it through a few times.

  • wow, a two day practice, it's amazing considering. i think my band had about 4 practices that were an hour long before performing, and we got gold at our competition, so i guess we did alright haha. but the room literally lit up when we hit c

  • recordings r never as good as the real thing.

  • great song. too bad someone had to ruin it

  • absolutely LOVE it! Our band did this song as well, but it didn't turn out nearly as good.

I actually like this arrangement better than the choral one.....

  • Yeah the vocal version is too fast

At our honor band in florida, we took it even slower and it made a huge difference

    the slower the better

  • Yes, I agree BlakLotus! Relish in Whitacre's music and enjoy those heavenly chords and phrases!!
