What Gandhi did to integrate lower-caste people into the mainstream society irked the upper-castes, hence they developed a hatred for Gandhi even before the partition.

Gandhi was in prison from 1942 till late 1945, during which time Muslim League had grown in support and the British government was convinced by Jinnah's argument without the Congress having much say until very late. @PUNEET076 if nehru had died then u can ask any real historian, india would not have survived. read ramchandra guha, romilla thapar, meghnad desai, MJ akbar. they all say the same thing. it was nehru's values and his vision that kept india as a democracy and his popularity ensured the survival of democracy in india. if not for him, there would have been no leader to bind india and prevent the independance of the other states. ppl who do not read put the blame on him but he is hero for historians

@TheMaskwa Go and read the history first before making foolish statements like this. Congress parlimentry party choose Sardar Patel as first PM , Nehru was recomended by M.Gandhi. May be this was the biggest mistake done by him. It was not Nehru but Patel who was the real leader, he integrated the India not nehru . Nehru snached the responsibilty of J& K and we know what is happend later.Because of his foolishness 1000s are getting killed every year even after 60yrs.

@TheMaskwa nehru was also corrupt, Indira gandhi's Husband broke relations ship with her & left the congress because of scandal Firoz Gandi wanted to expose it , Nehru toled him to keep it private and have settelment. But Firoz refused and exposed it in parliment. This is how they split for good. Nehru brought Indira in to cabinet and wanted to be PM after him, when there were several other experianced & freedom fighters was there.Since congress ruled they made text boks prasing him

@TheMaskwa and thought us he is some great fellow actually he was good 4 nothing just like rahul gandhi. We lost to chinesse and had to surender our land china & Pak because of him. He didn't bring any develpment . It was Patel & likes of Lal Bahdur Shastri who did the great works. Even today we can see centre has given special instruction that every project, roads infrastructre or monements buil should be named after Indira or Rajiv. They want to make India there ancestral property.

@toshyam999 All the outhors i have named credit nehru as being the man who kept india together. i think patel was a hero and im not taking anything away from him. but he died in 1950. after that it was only nehru who held the mantle. it was because of his vision that india survived as a democracy. t that stage of infancy india needed a strong leader who was popular and who could unite all of india in the beginning. nehru was that man all the historians agree. if there was political instablty

@toshyam999 like now then a new born india with all the problems that confront a new state would have collapsed. do u know the number of secessionist movements that were going on at that time?! do ou know that if it had not been for nehru there would have been many more. read ramchandra guha. he says it was nehru's vision and popularity that cut across all barriers that ppl had then like religion and held indian democracy together otherwise india would have gone down the road of pakistan.
