This was an awesome video with the perfect song. I was wondering, where in Hawaii is that huge tree trunk with the bench underneath. I'll be going to Hawaii in January and would like to see it in person, thanks!
@hawaiidoves - Yes, hearing the song still takes us right back there in our hearts. We got there on the perfect week. Looking forward to going back and spending some time scuba-diving! I'd move there if I could.
I've been hearing these songs all my life and i never realized that they were on youtube! the only other times i hear them is in the car when we can get the radio to work or when we sneak into the hotels and listen to the bands. i LOVE the sheraton, so pwetty!!! they have super cool bathrooms with carpet and everything. me and my brothers get covered in sand and wander through the ballroom until they throw us out. Im so happy its summer! finally free!
What a lovely song, and a beautiful, warm video. The pics are fabulous, and it looks like you had the time of your lives there together - you left me smiling. :)
Isn't that a great song!? I still listen to the cd all the time. When I feel stressed I pop in the cd and hit repeat...it always calms me down. We were supposed to go back next month but had to postpone for surgery. Can't wait to get back there!
When I was a little girl in waiki we'd go to a hotel and watch olomana perform live in a little lodge with guava juice and always fell asleep on the couches, and my dad would make me dance a hula for them while they sang. I miss oahu like no other
Sorry for the delay in answering you, I thot I had already. Anyways, cool childhood memories you have, you are so fortunate. Seldom a day goes by without me wondering how I can move my business to Hawaii-I miss it too. Thanx for sharing.
Growing up on the Big Island, I consider Maui to be a lot more touristy than there. I'd reconsider your dislike of the Big Island and stay mostly on the Hilo end of it. I believe there's more to see on the Big Island than you can anywhere else in Hawaii but, stay out of the tourist traps.
Thank you for your input. I think we got lucky cuz the place was pretty deserted. We want to see all the islands eventually so we'll look into the Hilo area, we are planning to go back in Feb. just not sure yet where. I could be happy with a hammock, my guitar, and a Mai Tai (or 2) near the water. : )
Next time go and visit my home island of Moloka'i. Country as it gets, no stoplights, no skyscrapers, no fast food anything. Just Hawaii in the peace and quiet as it always is was and will be for me. Mahalo nui for discovering Hawai'i for what it is, when you go back kiss the ground for me....I haven't been home in years. It will always be home for me and now it is for you and your family so kama'aina, welcome home.
Thanx! I'll check into it, we're going back in Feb 2010-still havent decided where, but definitly not the big island or touristy spots. We have started talking bout early retirement there. The spirit infected us.lol
Hope you get back soon, at least for a visit to recharge the soul.
ps - i still play this song several times in a week.
Its one of THE songs everyone in Hawai'i knows whether or not they're even from Kahalu'u lol. Even then, it doesn't even matter, its a song that takes you back to the "hana butta" "small kid time." We used to play it in the dorms in college and everyone from Hawaii would stop, listen or even cry. For kids away from home at college especially, its a song which opened a flood of memories that brought a smile or tears. It was a brief trip home, a way to go back just for a moment.
you need to go to kauai, ist not as touristy, I use to live on oahu. when you go to hawaii you want to see the culture, land and people, not some tourist trap. oahu, and maui are really touristy.
Thanx for the tip. We chose Maui cuz we heard the big island was all tourists and bar scene. I think we got lucky cuz there weren't many ppl there the week b4 Christmas. It seemed we had the place to ourselves. We are planning another trip back this year so I'll definitly check into Kauai. We could have stayed the whole time at the remote town of Hana and been quite happy.
But the dining, live music, and swimming in Lahania was great!
For 7 years I lived on Oahu. Robert Beaumont of Olomana placed his lei around my child's neck when he and Jerry Santos finished an outdoor show. Great music. Good, yet sad memories. Of course I have the cd's.
i wish i could just go back in live in hawaii, i visited waikiki, (honolulu) in oahu, best time of my life. there's nothing else i'd rather do then be on the beach in hawaii. so peaceful and relaxing, everyone's so happy... even the crazy junkies are peaceful!
I knew his Mother living in Wong's Village...Right next door....Small world...but .....big......Crowd.....The Greats of Hawaii are just remarkable and Im left without words to begin to describe how simple but free life was back then.........Humble beginnings bring about a legendary story for all to share......unending...........aloha oe....mau....loa....
There is soooo much great Hawaiian music, Olomana is one of the greats that came from the 1970's Much greatness came from that decade. Check Kalapana, Peter Moon, and the king of Hawaiian Gabby Pahinui, his sons are great too. When I moved to Hawaii the first thing I noticed that there were so many unbelievable guitar players. Thanks Great song.
One guy played this using a loop pedal. Lyrics didn't come with cd, but maybe we can find them. I completely melted when he played it. (the hulagirl didn't hurt any....)
Wow thanks for sharing,, I just got done shoving 2 feet of snow.. moving car covered cars.. spreding salt.. and wishing you took me on vacation,, Bugman In Maine..... thanks,, It warmed me up a little...
