You may have a point there. To those of us "funkaholics" who had been growing up with funk in the early years (Sly Stone etc.) there was a real distinction between "funk" and the later emerging "disco". Funk was always prefered by us...although even some of the early disco was kind of fun (and seemed like "pseudo-funk")....before disco became more stereotyped and repugnant. Disco did seem to chase funk away: along with appreciation for live brass music as well...heavy on the bass. Funk ON!!!
A just nasty song. So hot that the Ohio Players music was on fire. 1970's music was just the great era of the best music. True party music. I remember playing this in the backyard BBQ's and still funky today. Ohio Players are just should be in the Old School Hall of Fame so many hits.
always loved thier lp covers back in the day , when i would groove on thier music , most of the soul and funk bands were tight back then , real instruments and they would sound great live .
you're ah bad bad misses in those skin tight britchess, runnin folks in the digges baby about to bust the stitches...(sugarfoot) ohio legend!!!!!! your ah real fine lady, and ya walks a lil shady, step on the stripe on time cash money yo'r bound to find yeah.... skin tight. ice cold skin tight
Agree totally. This music started because so many young people then were not only listening to the stuff....they were playing it, too. I remember messing around with Sly and the Family Stone songs, Chicago, Earth, Wind, and Fire etc. etc. Later on: won outstanding soloist State Stage Band competition 1975...Trombone...LOL!! Hearing the music and PLAYING it was such a hoot!!!. Yup...stop texting for a while and grab some brass, strings, and a drum kit...'ya might be the next Funk Band. :-)
Everyone knows this group was ahead of it's time. They took FUNK to another level, and their ballards was untouchable. The only downside to this group was they could not perform live.
Back in the day I went to several of their concerts and was dissapointed every time. But they was a BEAST in the studio because all of their albums was FIYAH!!!
8 Track Boom BOX Booming on the Late Bus after High School Basketball practice ..This along with Fire and Honey made the ride home smooth, funky and Cool...
And indeed, it WAS him. And the band?!! They ROCKED. The horn section was incredible. At the concert, they also did an instrumental that was kick ass! I feel extremely blessed to have been able to see them live!
It was the year 2001. I was blessed to work in Lower Manhattan at the time. Somehow, someway, I heard about a FREE....FREE concert near my office...with the OHIO PLAYERS. Well, there was no way I was gonna miss that, though none of my friends were interested in coming alone. So I went by myself. Well can I just say it was an amazing PARTAY. When I say this 'old skinny' guy as the lead singer, I just KNEW...by his age, by his confidence, that he just HAD to be the original lead singer.
When I met pee Wee in Dayton back in 91' he was playing sax!! Here he is playing trombone, I knew he played trumpet tho'. He was a hell ofa' sax player, RIP Pee Wee he was a beautiful soul.
People-We can bring this music back! Get off your cell phones- get off your computers and go buy a REAL music instrument and learn to play! One Nation Under a Groove!
@MightyZarkon Gotta agree with you,i love this song it brings back so many good memories including my first girlfriend. The Radio stations back then were am radio they played this song 4 times a day never get sick of it.I just bought the CD a week ago. OMG this song bring bac so many memories with my daddy playin this whn i was young and i use 2 sit on da stair like 2 3 in da morning with his red light on n jus listen 2 it ( HE STILL DO WHN HE THROWNS PARTY)
I bought the Skin Tight 8track several years after it came out when I was about 15. I WORE IT OUT. I had to splice the tape back together at least 10 times. I wish the IRS would have kept the dogs off of them for a few more years. No telling what good music we missed...
@pmartymar Us white college kids were gettin' down with the funk too!!! This stuff was sooooo fun to dance to!!! Gwon Gwon Gwon...wit ya bad self!!!! :-) LOL Too bad disco came along and pretty much ended the funk...the eighties would have been a LOT better!! BRING ON THE FUNK!!!!!
@blondwiththewind The problem came when disco clubs like Studio 54 begin to play R&B/Funk records which caused R&B/funk music to be unfairly labeled as disco records. When people turned their noses up at disco they also turned their noses up at R&B/Funk. Then the production of R&B/Funk music change as the funk slap bass and popping guitars were considered old school.
@MrMallymal68 Thanks, I'm ashamed to say that I really never gave The Ohio Players a chance and listen to them, now that I have, I could kick myself. I like'em. Better late than never huh. Kool name for a Kool dude.
@MrMallymal68 I have, both of them, I fell in love with funky worm. I was listening to the GREAT OHIO PLAYERS all day and will be listening to them for many more. I now have them and Bootsy on my playlist.
@MrMallymal68 Don't get me wrong, I grew up during the 80's and 90's, born in 72. I like rap, old school rap that is, none of the new stuff, but didn't almost every rapper back then sample every song Bootsy made? Damn he was talented. I was telling my girl about it one day and let her listen to it. First thing she said was" Now did they pay the man for using his stuff" I looked at her and said "What do you think, HELL NO".
@belldn3 I know that you know what time it is! As a bass player and a DJ, I get SUPER HYPED when we're talking about the shit that inspired me as a youngster!

one of the nice things about the 70s was the "Black is beautiful" attitude and philosophy that arose in the US around the time that the Civil Rights Act was passed - it was good to see the African-American community look to its African roots as a source of pride & inspiration, and impressive to see the renaissance of Black musical culture - The strength, dignity, & beauty of the great African kings were in fact a source of inspiration - check the beginning of Coming to America!

Oh yeah, real R&B Funk son! This is when there were real bands not computers creating all the music and having bad singers fronting the tracks. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good singers left but very very few. Rap has its place also but if it's degrading and disrepects woman it's got to go! Believe it or not some rap has caused bad influence amongst the younger generation, even causing them to harm or kill each other or even end up in jail. I miss you Marvin Gaye, I miss you Luther.
@summerbabetoo Yes, the group did exist before Diamond came in. But, in Unsung, the group gave Diamond credit for taking them to the next level. He sang, whereas their previous drummer did not.
@temptsfan2..... I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING BUT SUGARFOOT DEFINED THE SOUND OF THE OHIO PLAYERS, POINT BLANK. MANY ARTIST ARE STILL RIDING HIS COAT TAILS, AWWWWWWW!
I was into Diamond and tried to cop all his stuff - I would learn his parts solos and all - but I think that Greg Webster laid down a funkier groove. Diamond was flashier but could be sloppy. Webster was just popping all the time. That's more to give Webster his due than to knock Diamond Williams though.
Thank You Ohio Players for leaving us your Legacy. This contribution to society is invaluable. It leaves a blueprint for aspiritng folks. Mr. Sugarfoot your vocal stying is glorius...the poise, expression, rhythmn, sophistication.... It's downright orgasmic...
The70's..... such a beautiful time for black culture & music.....Women were respected, social commentary, the message was love, Good Times, What's Happening, The Jeffersons, Flip Wilson, Sanford and Son, Naturals were cut tight, Soul Train Saturday Mornings, J5, Muhammad Ali, SOUL Brotha, Right on!!!....Shaft, Foxy Brown, Super Fly, Ice Cream truck in the hood, Afro pick with the Black Power salute on the end....BLACK WAS BEAUTIFUL!!....Lets get it back!! One Luv!!
@mashan1978 hoes make u do stupid shyt and supposedly that's why he didn't report the money or finances since he didn't want his wife knowing about his cheating and taking care of other hoes but its sad the rest of the group and to suffer and lose everything behind this, what a waste, that one guy with the turbin shoulda told everyone what was up when he found out what satch was doing
@tiana1017 I agree. How many hoes did he have? I would have told if I knew. They probably had a janky ass person to do the taxes for them too since Satch was in charge of the finances. They trusted Satch though. That was too shady.
@mashan1978 Naw it sounded like you blamed Satch for they're IRS trouble...NONE of them reported their income from royalty checks so they were all to blame, not just Satch...Satch may (or not) have done some other stuff, but he didn't cause them to lose their homes, cars and etc.
@asimsba418 Yeah, I saw that too and I agree.....time's goin on and sad to say noone lives forever. All too soon it's gonna get to the point that a true reunion will no longer be possible and that, my friends would be a tragedy.
Before Sugar there was Sly. When I first heard Skin Tight on the radio it blew my little adolescent mind. I was thinking, "That kind of sounds like Sly, but that's not Sly and the Family Stone! Who is that?" When they said it was the Ohio Players, it REALLY blew my mind - and it made sense. I was already an Ohio Players freak and Sugar was always so cool with his hoods and his double-necked guitar. But, yeah, what Sugar kind of did was bring the Sly thing to the common man.
Wickid baseline wit those high horns & Sugar Foot spittin game on top of it. That shit is about as SICK as it gets. So glad I grew up in the 70's. BEST MUSIC EVER.
@sda1225 Marshall Jones is kind of to Funk bass what Hank Mobley was to jazz tenor saxophone. Just as there are a lot of Trane clones there are Larry Graham clones all over the place. Guys like that are hard to miss. But a whole lot of sax players are playing Hank Mobley and don't know it. Playing Mobley to some extent became simply playing saxophone. The same is true of Marshall Jones and funk bass. Bass players have been playing Marshall Jones for decades whether they know it or not.
Yeah that's right what chaw know about this music? I thought this music would last forever I really did. And now even if they sample it it aint the same. Only if they would've just left the stereo alone. Rock on O.P
Now this is some old school shit for your ass. I was 14 yrs old when this was bumping, I had a TWA back in the day... Teenie Weenie Afro but it was tight. Damn I am getting old. Thanks for the memories.
I don't know what's wrong with this new generation. I think they have lost thier soul. This is the most grooving dancing music! Love old R&B thanks for posting this!

MANY ARTIST ARE STILL RIDING HIS COAT TAILS, AWWWWWWW!
summerbabetoo 7 months ago
@summerbabetoo Sugarfoot did indeed have a huge impact on music -- where would be without all those AWWWWs?! Enjoy the great music!

@temptsfan2

One Luv!!

Why Satch why did you squander the group's money? Such an awesome group. Not matter what I'm for ever a fan.
mashan1978 7 months ago
@mashan1978 hoes make u do stupid shyt and supposedly that's why he didn't report the money or finances since he didn't want his wife knowing about his cheating and taking care of other hoes but its sad the rest of the group and to suffer and lose everything behind this, what a waste, that one guy with the turbin shoulda told everyone what was up when he found out what satch was doing
tiana1017 7 months ago
@tiana1017 I agree. How many hoes did he have? I would have told if I knew. They probably had a janky ass person to do the taxes for them too since Satch was in charge of the finances. They trusted Satch though. That was too shady.
mashan1978 7 months ago
@mashan1978 hoes hoes and more hoes that's why and probably drugs
tiana1017 7 months ago
@mashan1978 They got in trouble for not reporting royalties, a check which they devided equally among each other..
ohioplayer 7 months ago
@ohioplayer come on I'm not brand new I know what a royalty check is. The IRS got at them too. It wasa rhetorical question.
mashan1978 7 months ago
@mashan1978 Naw it sounded like you blamed Satch for they're IRS trouble...NONE of them reported their income from royalty checks so they were all to blame, not just Satch...Satch may (or not) have done some other stuff, but he didn't cause them to lose their homes, cars and etc.

But, yeah, what Sugar kind of did was bring the Sly thing to the common man.
coybacon251 6 months ago
Wickid baseline wit those high horns & Sugar Foot spittin game on top of it. That shit is about as SICK as it gets. So glad I grew up in the 70's. BEST MUSIC EVER.
sda1225 7 months ago 2
@sda1225 Marshall Jones is kind of to Funk bass what Hank Mobley was to jazz tenor saxophone. Just as there are a lot of Trane clones there are Larry Graham clones all over the place. Guys like that are hard to miss. But a whole lot of sax players are playing Hank Mobley and don't know it. Playing Mobley to some extent became simply playing saxophone. The same is true of Marshall Jones and funk bass. Bass players have been playing Marshall Jones for decades whether they know it or not.
