The estimated effects of the explosives remaining aboard her 'going up' seems grossly exaggerated, there is much worse thing hiding under the sea surface. There is two big craters in the bottom of the Irtish sea that has most of the enormous amount of surplus ammo from WW2 together with stock piles of chemical weapons and god knows what else was dumped. Thats something you really do not want to go kaboom and its only really remembered about when somebody wanted to put a gas pipeline through it.
well im pretty much screwed if this blows up, i live on the coastline overlooking the sea there :L and ive been on a boat out round the wreck and its very scary :s
One point five kilotonne explosion. The blast would kill thousands with many more injured and blinded by flying glass. Many bombs would be thown out intact to fly inland. The big fear used to ne an oil tanker or gas ship collideing with the wreck and both exploding. Then there is the possibility of causing secondary blasts in Canvey island oil refinary.
@SvenTviking if it whas possiby tho make the grund the ship is laying on tho make it float upover mater or try take awy the bombs that dosent have fuses
you could see it anytime from the beach as for the explosion not killing anyone most of sheerness is below sealevel the wave would wipe out most of the homes
if it went bang at night every one would be havily asleep in bed and may just wake up in time to drown
I say give it back to the Yanks, Let them do something about it, as it belongs to them. Its not going to happen though as they have it listed as sunk with total loss of cargo in the North Atlantic, they always were good at telling lies, even back then.
For once it wasn't their fault it ran aground and sank. It was the fault of the British harbourmaster, so it's really our fault and our responsibility.
@MontytheHorse Well that's good to hear that it wasn't our fault if that's in fact true, but that isn't good enough. We should work together for the sake of your citizens.
IIRC the US Government has offered at least twice to clear the wreck, but our government has turned them down. I think possibly because when a similar wreck was being cleared in the Channel it exploded, fortunatley not doing any damage. The fact of that ship must have been uppermost in official minds when deciding to turn down the US offer. It's one thing to have an ammo ship explode in deep water in the Channel and quite another to have it go up in shallow water near the coast.
@MontytheHorse A polish ship carrying a similar amount of cargo sank off the South coast. It was decided to dismantle her 20 years later but she blew up as workmen were removing the explosives and 10 people died.
look up the great Halifax explosion of WWI if you want some idea of the destruction this could cause-one advantage here is that it isn't right in a harbour per say and no one will have a reason to look at it when it goes reducing the injuries such as blindness. I am sure some damage will be done and people hurt but nothing super bad I hope
people won't die from the ss richard montgomery when she exploed well if they are next to it they die. not people who are on the isle of sheppy and the beaches their. But when the explotion does trigger the impact of the explotion will make people on isle of sheepy and abit of southend fly backwards and the house will get damage.
of couse because if people were on a boat or going for a dive to vist it under water and a touch or movement from the them will trigger it and that explotion will kill or injuired them if the injuired were luck to escape from their deaths. The ships far away from the isle but it was close to it i totally say that the ship will kill thousand of people.
ur right thousand of people will die my mum told me i thought it slightly far away and it unpossible that it will kill people but for a big wave to come to the isle it will kill people dang flabit
Maybe thats because the pacific is proberbly something like 15,0000,0000 sq meteres wide and 50,0000000,0000 meters long. remember, the thames is only a short distance, and i live in southend on sea and i can see it from where i live.. Plus the explosion would be bigger than the animated version on the video
I don't get it, nukes tested in the pacific never created anything close to a tsunami. I highly doubt any shockwave would do any damage on land any more than a brisk English storm (perhaps significantly less) Environmentally, its another question as how the explosion might affect the eco system in the long term. But as for human danger? Id say minimal so long as they keep a few hundred yards away.

Should get the Polish government to arrange its removal as there are more Poles at risk on the Island than Islanders.

Get Stuffed about blowing It up. I live less than a Mile from it. I can see the SS Richard Montgomery clearly from my house.
If it blew up, the devastation would be horrible. my family and I would be killed for sure.

@L13joo That's the one, though I didn't know about the deaths. IIRC the explosion did cause a minor earthquake and some panic on shore.
