I think that the words John chooses here are not optimal. He says 'We have money to use it in such a way that we show that money is not our god and God is our God.' I believe that a better direction or focus is 'We have money so that we can worship God with our money' and then that 'God uses that worship to show others the nature of His grace'. In other words, our focus should be on worship before God alone, not on displaying our good works to others, and God will use our worship to His glory.
