His name is David Palmer, and eventually Donald did start singing live, although that didn't last long because they became strictly a studio band until the 90s.
Gee ,what makes these songs better than the rest? Its the time that has gone into them... there is a story there, with great music... what else is there?
@pete9124 everyone wants to work hard when it leads to what that band wants but now days, the record company is hounding everybody and breathing down thier necks record companies, not artists are in charge even if profit is the only factor they look at.
David Palmer did a pretty good job singing this one. It's still hard to imagine Fagen taking a backseat to another singer though....glad he eventually got over his stage fright...
David Jordan had to sing the live stuff because Fagan was filled with stagefright and afraid to sing in public. At least someone in the band had the nutz to sing live ya know. That is until Fagan was finally persuaded to start singing and they fired Jordan. I saw them last night in Cincinnati again and they are still rockin!
As far as I'm concerned, Donald Fagen is the voice and the genius behind Steely Dan. This guy singing sucks big time. No passion. Just singing the words. Go way back beyond "Aja" you young kids, and listen to "Countdown to Ecstasy", although " Do it Again" caught my attention from the start and I became a lifelong Donald Fagan and Walter Becker fan, who ARE Steely Dan.Funny that "Do it Again" did not earn them fame when it remains my favorite. The haunting melody coupled with the despairing sto
@RAYMONDKNG Nice one dude. Good to see I'm not so alone in reading my history. Baxter also played with the Doobie Brothers & actually recommended Michael McDonald as an alternative lead singer at one point, which of course lead them in a whole new direction for which many of us know them most well for. Although I'm sure there'll be some some opinions to the contrary.
Laughable. Laud your 3.0. Pathetic. Here are your two: a) Molecular Psychiatry 2008 links it to depression and heart disease; b) Scientific American reports 11/20 that Rutgers study found that rats given THC - active ingredient in pot; experienced disruptions in the brain-cell firing that causes memories to be formed. It also slowed brain-wave activity, including theta, fast-ripple waves and gamma waves. Bait you? You sent your crap to me. Undergrad idiot. We're done.
Funny, I don't recall Carrot-Top being in Steely Dan ;) Seriously, though, I wonder why Fagen didn't sing it himself. It completely changes the sound of the piece, imho.
@DJBuglip Because it was in the David Palmer days, when Fagen frequently suffered from boughts of stage fright and lacked any self confidence in his vocal abilities. It's why Palmer was included in the band to start with as lead vocalist. Their producers though eventually convinced Fagen to get over his fear and do it himself as they felt that Palmer simply lacked the ability to bring forth the true nature & passion of their songs as well as Fagen could. Thank God they saw it & corrected. ;)
@MrAmberRocker that's a bit too arty farty. I suspect the real reason was visual presentation. Palmer was as good in voice as Fagen, maybe better, but his ginger frizz was not appealing
Today though Fagen looks a wreck, albeit a brilliant one
Prop 19 (pot) would not give you music like this you moron. In fact, Fagen had a reclusive nature because he was not a druggie and disapproved. 19 was shotdown anyway.
@quadbravo Actually, many drugs, including marijuana, are known to improve creativity, due to the supression of natural inhibitions that ohterwise impede the creative process.
@quadbravo Do your homework, "moron". Marijuana, it has been irrefutably proven, does not bind to dopamine receptors in the brain, the necessary criterion for physical addiction. Marijuana is NOT addictive, even as much so as caffeine, and certainly not even in the same league as alcohol or tobacco, which our society has deemed "acceptable" drugs. I smoked grass for 20 years, quit seven years ago, never had any withdrawals, cravings, or other adverse effects. You're deluded.
@quadbravo Oh, and now, in my forties, maintain a respectable g.p.a. over 3.0 at the state university I returned to in order to further my education and switch careers, so I'd suggest that maybe the "dropouts" you refer to had something more than marijuana inhibiting their drive to succeed. Jackass.
@DJBuglip You could suggest whatever you want but it would categorically contrary to hundreds of studies on the issue. And for those reading this, take note that DJB, scholar that he is, is proud of a 3.0 gpa. It stands on its own.
@quadbravo Last one, then I'm through being baited by an ignoramus. Cite a couple of those studies for me... still waiting. That's a bald-faced lie. I've done the research. Secondly I said OVER 3.0, and yes, we're not talking about podunk U here, this program is academically challenging and I'm quite proud of a better than 'B' average (which is what over than 3.0 means... I figured you could use the explanation). I seriously doubt you graduated college, and no, community college doesn't count.
@quadbravo you are a fucking moron. "droves of inner city dropouts hooked on marijuana"....? it is impossible to become addicted to marijuana. if your saying that djbuglip guy is dumb to be proud of a 3.0 yet you cannot tell fact from fiction you are the truee dumbass
@jmarshmellowman Why is it the most profane retards feel the need to message me as though I care? Physical addiction is not the only form of addiction, idiot. Gambling is addictive yet carries no withdrawl. All vice is that way. You're perpetrating a myth that pot has no effect on cerebral performance. Get real. Toke up dude. I could care less; oh, and learn to spell.
@quadbravo Also, the whole reason prop 19 failed was bullshit politics, i.e, as all the growers and distributors in northern CA campaigned vehemently AGAINST legalization, because they didn't want the combination of tax liability and decreased pricing to hurt their profit margin (and I hope the state proceeds to prosecute and jail a bunch of those a**holes in response).
Ha ha...yeah, seeing them in the 70's...joints flying down the rows. Acid induced 30 minute drum solos....A fog developing in the arena from illicit smoke. It was great back then and a lot less anal. Today...No smoking in the auditorium, no bic lighters blazing(fire hazard?) , and instead of passing joints....the guys are popping viagra. Oh the tiiimmmmes they are a chaaaangin! We did have fun back then, didn't we!
man i tale back everything i said about david palmer . this live version here is fuckin awesome! his vocals werent as good as fagans in the studio but he is decent. and this band played everything perfectly! if you look at their performances now it is a whole lot lacking.sorry david.
@GabrielDhalaman - It's Donald Fagan, the Major Dude that composed this song. He used to have bad stage fright, so they hired David Palmer to front the band until Fagan figured it out...then godbye Palmer!
Agreed Rurne! Comparing DEVO and Stella Dan (STELLAAAA) is a silly venture in the first place. Looking back I think I was responding to some dude who was arguing DEVO was superior to SD and should also be voted into R&R HoF.
And that DEVO had far greater influence than SD.
My response was simply that the musicianship in the Dan is far more developed that DEVO, and in fact the palyers in SD are among the highest level of musians in a Rock band... to be cont.....
David Palmer may not have been as charismatic or good looking as Roger Daltrey, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Rod Stewart or Jim Morrison however he could sing with the best of them.
That's NOT Robert Plant on vocals!! Jeeeez!! It's David Palmer who was in the original line-up. Why he sang this song on this particular day is anyone's guess, as Fagan sang this song on the album. One person suggested that Fagan suffered from "stage-fright" early on.
Donald Fagan certainly does have a very Big Mouth ! He even has FANGS ! but we are all grateful for what comes OUT of that mouth. After he's done with his gig, he can fit a whole turkey leg in there, if he wants. I like seeing that mouth WIDE open !
@sserpent21 Do you know what happened to David Palmer? I think he is very talented and I've tried to find out about him, but there isn't anything about him.
David Palmer sang most of the tunes live during this period as Fagan had considerable stage fright, even though he sang lead on the album for this tune. Palmer most notably sang lead on Dirty Work. It's pretty cool to see Skunk playing congas instead of guitar, pretty well too.
This song always sounded like Santana to me for some reason. I just always thought it definitely sounded like a song Santana could have his name on and i'd believe it.
@KMatteKudasaiC - David Palmer, a lead vocalist hired for just one early album, because Donald Fagen (half of Steely Dan and most often vocalist) did not want to really sing. After Palmer (good but.....) did not really suit their style, Fagen picked up the vocals and was aided occasionally by another side-man, Michael MacDonald - who ended up taking over the Doobie Brothers.
Anyone know songs that sound a lot like this? This song automatically makes me thinks of the seventies (for obvious reasons), but I can't think of anything else that sounds like this. I know plenty of seventies songs but nothing like this. Can anyone help?
Some people would say some early Santana could sound like this, also "Mama told me not to come" from Three Dog Night, Listen to the Abraxas album from Santana, it is sure to blow your mind, also watch his performance at Woodstock, try the song "The Soft Parade" by The Doors. cheers and good luck
what a band! (the guy talking about devo is clearly a troll btw) to say they were just like other bands at the time? pleaase ! I can still remember hearing this on the radio for the first time-instant shivers-thinking how different it was-a fan ever since.I'm surpirsed at the for&against palmer debate tho.theres good in each...but to describe palmers performance here as "average"(slapfest)? do you really think so? for what its worth I think its stunning-but it'd be boring if we all agreed.
And to say that David Palmer should have replaced Fagan, on the strength of one average performance, is really funny.
Donald fagan is the major songwriter, by far... and his voice is trademark Steely Dan.......so. if you take all that away.....you have a completely different band! . . . . . one thats looking for some great pop/jazz fusion songs, clever lyrics, and a decent front man....... While we're at it, lets remove Angus from ac/dc and take Sting from the Police, too..... etc
a quick look at these guys doing "reeling in the years" (on you tube) live in 1978 on the midnight special, will confirm that Fagan's nerves are a myth.
But what i dont get, is that this is the guy that sang "dirty work', from the same album, but did not sing on this track.
Gotta loce Skunk Baxter - great guitar player, great percussionist and now a freakin defense dept. consultant! How's that for funny - a dope smokin, long hair, hippie defense analyst!
Is that David Palmer singing lead? I'm new to the Steely Dan fan club and learned he was one the lead singer on "Dirty Work" - also read that Palmer is dead.
@mojo4404 It's Palmer, but I am unaware of him being dead. You might be thinking of Jim Hodder, the drummer (who also sang lead on "Midnight Cruiser"). Hodder drowned in 1990.
No one is Dan; Steely Dan is a freaking sex toy in a novel, and Fagan and Becker borrowed the name from "Steely Dan III from Yokohama," a strap-on dildo referred to in the William Burroughs novel The Naked Lunch.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
atl east palmer can carry a tune fagan uses synthisizer and drowned out by backup singers and still sounds horrible I can make a barking dog sound good in the studio

@sserpent21 Do you know what happened to David Palmer? I think he is very talented and I've tried to find out about him, but there isn't anything about him.

Fagen's voice is much better suited for this song than Palmer's.

David Palmer sang most of the tunes live during this period as Fagan had considerable stage fright, even though he sang lead on the album for this tune. Palmer most notably sang lead on Dirty Work. It's pretty cool to see Skunk playing congas instead of guitar, pretty well too.

It's kind of funny that you don't even really see Walter Becker at all
thannigan29 1 year ago
@thannigan29 What's funny ( or sad ) is that you seem to be more focused on what you see as opposed to what you hear.

Who the heck is that singing with Donald Fagen???...I thought it was Ted Nugent at first, but he's not as kewl, hahaha

Skunk on the hand drums, what a stoner.

This song always sounded like Santana to me for some reason. I just always thought it definitely sounded like a song Santana could have his name on and i'd believe it.

Whos the weird al looking guy that sings?
KMatteKudasaiC 1 year ago
@KMatteKudasaiC - David Palmer, a lead vocalist hired for just one early album, because Donald Fagen (half of Steely Dan and most often vocalist) did not want to really sing. After Palmer (good but.....) did not really suit their style, Fagen picked up the vocals and was aided occasionally by another side-man, Michael MacDonald - who ended up taking over the Doobie Brothers.

Classic Rock? Maybe... I think it's more funk than rock, tho... But Steeley Dan deserves 5 stars, so there u go.

Anyone know songs that sound a lot like this? This song automatically makes me thinks of the seventies (for obvious reasons), but I can't think of anything else that sounds like this. I know plenty of seventies songs but nothing like this. Can anyone help?
asianwannabeamerican 1 year ago
Some people would say some early Santana could sound like this, also "Mama told me not to come" from Three Dog Night, Listen to the Abraxas album from Santana, it is sure to blow your mind, also watch his performance at Woodstock, try the song "The Soft Parade" by The Doors. cheers and good luck

what a band! (the guy talking about devo is clearly a troll btw) to say they were just like other bands at the time? pleaase ! I can still remember hearing this on the radio for the first time-instant shivers-thinking how different it was-a fan ever since.I'm surpirsed at the for&against palmer debate tho.theres good in each...but to describe palmers performance here as "average"(slapfest)? do you really think so? for what its worth I think its stunning-but it'd be boring if we all agreed.
echo680 1 year ago 2
And to say that David Palmer should have replaced Fagan, on the strength of one average performance, is really funny.
Donald fagan is the major songwriter, by far... and his voice is trademark Steely Dan.......so. if you take all that away.....you have a completely different band! . . . . . one thats looking for some great pop/jazz fusion songs, clever lyrics, and a decent front man....... While we're at it, lets remove Angus from ac/dc and take Sting from the Police, too..... etc

you are totally corect one thing i would love to have seen Denny Dias stay w/ them a bit longer he is very unique player
MOSKII58 1 year ago
a quick look at these guys doing "reeling in the years" (on you tube) live in 1978 on the midnight special, will confirm that Fagan's nerves are a myth.
But what i dont get, is that this is the guy that sang "dirty work', from the same album, but did not sing on this track.
Maybe Donald had a sore throat?

That Denny Diaz could play boy! Strange that David Palmer is singing this when Donald Fagan sang this on the original studio cut.

I heard Donald had major stage fright when he sang in the early years...

Is that David Palmer singing lead? I'm new to the Steely Dan fan club and learned he was one the lead singer on "Dirty Work" - also read that Palmer is dead.
mojo4404 2 years ago
@mojo4404 It's Palmer, but I am unaware of him being dead. You might be thinking of Jim Hodder, the drummer (who also sang lead on "Midnight Cruiser"). Hodder drowned in 1990.
mtut 1 year ago
@mtut Palmer is still alive. But he didn't do much performing after exiting SD, did some work in the '80's.

No one is Dan; Steely Dan is a freaking sex toy in a novel, and Fagan and Becker borrowed the name from "Steely Dan III from Yokohama," a strap-on dildo referred to in the William Burroughs novel The Naked Lunch.

Which one is Dan? The guy at the organ, or the singer?
