A NEW one is about $7,000.00 but it has been said that the tape guides are too narrow on the new ones. It was an attempt to correct a derailing problem, but it ended-up causing tape sticking, and other tape problems; breaking, ruffling etc..
One thing folks don't ever mention, is that Fripp and Pinder would roll-in a ton of reverb on certain long-held notes. Much of how Mellotrons sounded so cool was a result of how the track was produced after it was recorded. Robert Fripp was the master NQ.
My mellotron is an EMI400 107 (number 8 out of 100). I bought it in 1986 and it`s currently very out of order. It looks great though...just needs that overhaul. The classic flute/3 violins/cello. I love this video...it shows you just how the fingering of chords is so very important to mellotron playing.
No. This is Pierre Veilleux, formerly with Music Box (Genesis tribute band), at the Tronto workshop on the mellotron, held in Toronto in 2001, at which Ian McDonald was the featured speaker.

Are those the M400 violins? They sound a lot different than the MkII violins on my M400.
