Read the cover notes. Martin Carthy had recently recorded Lord Franklin, an old English folk song, and Dylan 1966-67 ? (who was struggling to find a medium to set THIS song to) grabbed Carthy's format - and gives him credit for that on his (Dylan's) cover notes. If you think this is sad (which it ain't really ..... we all have these fond memories and none of us dare call them truly sad), then please listen to Martin Carthy's song. Yes, sad, but NOT with utter despair.
@4730Peter Thanks for the info. I amend my above comment to "sang" then instead of "wrote." I still like Dylan's take on the tune, though. I think it's his voice that grabs me more than Carthy's. Would probably help if I were English.
@RaoulMiZikhron Bob Dylan is in my blood... I'll always remember the long afternoons I've passed on the floor next to the record-player trying to catch Bob's lyrics, As a non English native speaker it was a really hard task... Me and Bob lived a lot together...
absolute genius - takes me back to when I was 19 and the friends I had then were the ones I still think about - we saw through the bullshit then and, although I rarely see them, their influence still inspires me to not think like the rest of the sheep around me
bobs the greatest song writer n these words are so true im 44 and it sad when you think of your friends that went there separate ways in the course of time
Every one my age is aware of the inevitable, eternal split, and every one of us dismisses it. Bob Dylan is a man in ponder, and through ponder we can all obtain epiphanies like this song.
@OneWhoLivesThere i've always found this song to be more melancholy than sad. what is sad is my slab (onna columbia 360, no less) has a huge crack in it, so's i can't listen to this record on wax no more
Jesus is the only hope of salvation from the guilt of sin. He is God come in the flesh. And he came to wash away our sins with his blood that he shed on the cross. Salvation is a free gift, but you must repent and ask Jesus to save you from your sins and come into your heart. God is good. It is written, "The just shall live by his faith."
So much truth. I wish, I wish, I wish in vain...

How true. We used to sing this song in the 60's. Now we're split on three continents, and we;ll never be together again.
This song is in my blood.
