Crows are one of the most intelligent species on the planet believe it or not. They have amazing memories and an advanced form of language, even incorporating regional dialects. They hold grudges. They not only trick other crows when hiding food caches (hide in their chest feathers if spotted), but realise that they can trick each other (so can folow the crow not the pretend "stash"). They've adapted to use human society ie dropping walnuts in front of cars rather than dropping from heights.
Holy Fuck! very underestimated this animal is.. now get that bird out of a shitty captivity space like that, reminds me of the holding cell at the local county jail...
crows are the smartest animal in the world. smarter than dogs, cats, dolphins and chimps. look up the video of the crow who drops a nut it cant open from a stop light, has the cars do its dirty work of opening it, flys down to the cross walk and waits the the little light that says it's safe to cross to go get his opened walnut.
Ok now birds are learning to use tools to feed themselves...that reminds me of the first proto-humans that started to use bones to hunt animals...then spears made of wood..Are we looking at the birth of a new intelligent race on earth O.o?
@JOLEMONGOL Interesting idea. Just as early primates threw spears and stones at deer and antelope, crows and many birds such as vultures drop stones on turtles from above to crack their shells and drop eggs from a high distance to crack them open. Crows will drop nuts in front of moving cars to crack those open.
@zephyrous7 I'm with you. Why haven't they become more intelligent than us? Because we're occuping their position. If we disappear tomorrow, what do you think it will happen? Crows, Chimpanzees or Dolphins?
if he had done it without trying first with the straight wire or whatever it was i would have thought it had been trained but after seeing that it tried and then figured a different strategy i have to say this is the smartest i've ever seen a bird do. I would say when it comes to sea animals the dolphin is the smartest (it has a natural instinct to save drowning humans without being trained and if it fails it will burst and die from the feeling of failure)
it can do a trick, thus it must have intelligence which is: rational thought, comprehension, a conscious and self awereness. Or does it just do a trick which was evolved for it to get to larvae stuck in holes in trees?
SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Cluaran2
More likely Bonobos.
Chimpanzees lack the advanced social structure of Bonobos.
They're much too agressive and too violent to work together as well as Bonobos do.
