Das ist ein wunderschönes, trauriges Lied und ich mag es sehr. Du hast das ganz toll interpretiert und so ganz anders, als ich es kenne und singe. (In Jiddisch gefällt es mir aber trotzdem besser als in Englisch) Du hast da wahnsinnig viel Gefühl reingelegt... Danke für das schöne Stück. ;)

It's a pretty song, and I've loved it ever since I heard Joan Baez singing it on her first LP, but I've always thought the text was a bit questionable - what, all you have to do to avoid being slaughtered is to be born a bird? That's like telling a beggar that all he had to do is be born rich for his problems to go away.

I think it's not to read and understand as the words are.

The wings are a metaphor how to can be free in mind and leave all the trouble and pain that a life can have.

And if you think at the time it was written, in days of Nazism, the deportations and the death of (not only) jewish people in concentration camps, the calf my not be a calf and the wind my not be the wind.
