@bbperv Whatever. Syd's songs are largely crap. Mindless, tuneless drivel. Just listen to that awful song that Robyn Hitchcock plays. Syd has been deified because of his suffering, because of his early role in what was later a great band, and because some people think drugs are cool.

Syd flipped out. Alot of people had reactions to LSD or hallucinogens during the late sixties. Everyone from that era knows people like Syd who "lost it." I only did acid 40 or 50 times {I knew people who did it 4 or 5 times a week.......every week.} I think this discussion of Syd is much ado about nothing. It happens. The fact is the Floyd were massively successful after Syd and did some phenomenal stuff 1,000 times better than anything he ever did. Fact. Yes, he started the process. So what?
@kentucy9999 Pink Floyd post Barrett were much more successful on the radio perhaps. But they don't even come close creatively, innovatively, or complex wise to the Barrett era. The only album that I'd say is very good after Barrett is Dark Side and they just happened to completely rip off his style on that album. Their other works were sad excuse pop songs that were written to get air time.
@gcdc14 lol na they werent "sad excuse pop songs written to get air time"
is atom heart mother pop? how about the 23 minute experimental track called echoes?? or animals, one of the best floyd albums... floyd with syd was great but no need to bash the time after syd left
...i have watched this again. Am i the only person who wants to punch Robyn Hitchcock. He should be called Rubin Hitchycock, because that is what he is doing, what a wanker!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow suprised i got so many thumbs up when so many ppl are talking shit that they have no clue what theyre talking about. so if your going to comment on what i have stated please have(or have had) a physcadelic experience b4 you try 2 talk bad about something that you really have business commenting on. LSD addictive what a fucking idiot. KNOW WTF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT B4 YOU WRITE SOME DUMB SHIT!!!!!!!!!
@INSFAN86 You NEVER need drugs to enjoy this music deeply. I have since the late 1970s in fact, a guy born in 66, I think my mental state suffers from the time I was born, and my birth parents
@INSFAN86 actually although lsd might not be physically addictive, like drugs such as heroin or nicotine, where your body actually craves it and you need it to get rid of the pain, but it is mentally addictive. if you do it as much as syd barrett or many people i know have, you start living in a different world when your tripping, and a lot of people cant escape it for a long time, and it can break them. it is a very strong mental addiction.
pink floyd is a great(more than great)band, but, gilmore is a hypocrit, because when they ditch sid,the rock of the band, vocals, lirycs, production, instrumental, etc, they should ve changed the name of the band, but they didnt had the guts to do it,pink floyd is all about sid ideas and art,but a litle washed up soo the mainstream would and buy it,all great men in this industry that have a litle talent its sucked till he doesnt have anything else in is soul that rents a penny so bye bye, long live sid
@n1n2n3n4100 It's ROGER "SYD" he changed the name from SID which is a nickname based on someone he knew, but Syd changed the spelling himself, it was basically a tip of the hat to a local friend. Pink Floyd is honoring the name Syd picked for them, imagine had they stayed with "Tea Set"?!?
Everyone. And I say everyone should do mushrooms, LSD, and DMT at least once in their life. And if your against phsycedlic drugs stop being a fucking hypocrite because guess what, You do DMT in your sleep. Everytime you sleep. Sorry for breaking the bad news. We ALL do drugs. have a nice dream.
@DeseasedOranges The difference is that one comes as a natural part of your biological system and the others are induced by human interference. Usually nature knows best. We tend to fuck things up more often.
@DeseasedOranges DMT is a naturally occurring chemical your not actually taking the drug but the experiences you have while your dreaming come into vivid and realistic patterns while you are actually conscious
Don't talk nonsense. I don't take it any more, I'm 40 this year, but I took VAST, Syd Barrett level quantities of LSD and psiylocybin ('Magic Mushrooms') many many times in my younger days and I'm fine. Unless one has a predisposition to psychological illnesses, you will NOT have any side effects later in life other than a greater understanding of the world around you, if you want to call that a side effect. The 'flashback' is a common myth brought about those who never took it.
@DeseasedOranges sleeping doesn't make us over dose..doesn't fry our brains. stupid analogy...of course it would make sense after a few mushies...so yeahhhh mannnn..you are soooo right... NOT.. why on earth is this comment so popular?
No disrespect to Syd but what could he possibly add to perfection? Which is what Floyd transformed into. It's very possible Floyd might have taken a different direction and not achieved the amount of rich material had Syd stayed in the group. I don't wish this type of drug induced sickness on anyone, but I believe Floyd became better than Syd's vision of what the band would be.
for some reason, i'm addicted to watching stuff about syd. it's nice but there's no end because they never got to his death nor have him for interview. it's all third person (talking about syd). his own words are negated.
GREAT insights by Duggie Fields. GREAT Robyn Hitchcock commentary and version of "Dominoes." Wonderful documentary. I got into Syd in high school (ca. 1986) through a girlfriend. Then Opel came out. LSD hovered nearby (or made me hover!). GREAT times.
It's good to see the portions that were totally taken off the VH1 truncated version. I had no idea they butchered all these very important videos and insights how Syd was before he left music altogether.
@TAXavier we dont even know if he had schizophrenia, when you do THAT much acid, the chemical backlash is just immense, schizophrenic or not, that much will creep up on you and turn your brain to mush...
@TAXavier Exactltly!! I can't stand when people feed into that mythology. Syd took no more or less drugs than many of his peers and yet the majority of them went on to live mentally stable lives (Keith Richards being a shining example). Almost every description of Syd during those yrs screams schizophrenia. He's straight out of a textbook. The apathy, word finding difficulties, retreat from social life, confusion, etc are all symptoms of schizophrenia which tends to manifest between ages 18-24
@barneycoles He was clearly schizophrenic. Drugs had nothing to do with it. In fact, there has never been a single recorded case of anyone going permanently "insane" from taking drugs--unless they had a severe underlying mental illness. Syd would have developed schizophrenia independent of his drug intake b/c it's a genetic disease that manifest at predictable ages (18-24) sometimes later but rarely after 30. Sufferers are often highly intelligent and creative prior to their first breakdown.
alot of people don't like robyn hitchcock because in this full interview which is on the DVD he comes across as a bit of a wanker, which he does a bit, but i think he really does Dominoes justice.
@INSFAN86 so true but sometimes I wish I never did it just because some things are never the same you lose that innocense...though I still jump on every oppourtunity to do it
@bigfoot30045 - yeah if you abuse it. i know pleanty of people that have tripped once or twice and there is nothing wrong with them. its not a drug you want to do day in and day out. Syd's use was just straight overkill. that shits nuts
@INSFAN86 Anyone who needs LSD to open up their minds and gain inspiration seriously lacks creativity and imagination. Frank Zappa was as clean as a whistle and stranger and more creative than almost any artist in modern history. LSD is an easy way to finding new ways to look at things, and at the same time, a dangerous way.
@zzzzzzooioriotrt lsd is non-addictive, maybe a psychological addiction, you've have obviously never taken lsd it's for certain people, it's can help you, or destroy you
@bmattson08 Constant diet of chemicals is NOT good, Even if you are talking normal ingestion, moderation is the key. I think it was highly in the scene before laws were cracking down on drugs of all known dangerous types. "weed" is probably less a real concern then the others, considering draconian laws on that.
I have a bit of trouble grasping this. How bad was syd hurt? Did he ever show any sign of recovery? Did he ever take therapy? I know they mention that they tried to get him into therapy and it wouldn't work but surely some must have had some kind of influence on him? Or the ability to force him for his own good?
If you've ever taken hallucinogens, particularly acid, you'd know that he'd discovered something about himself that made him realize something he didn't like
It's deeply personal and representative of the times
Yeah? That doesn't really answer my question. This seems more like he burnt out into psychosis which is treatable. I have taken both acid and peyote. And indeed you discover many things about yourself and the world that you may not particularly like. But.. I guess so ahs the rest of pink floyd and none of the others nor me have psychotic behavior.
Your answer doesn't seem to tackle my question. Thanks anyway
with respect to Jack Monck's comments about "the wheels comingin off" it was a little more complicated.. from one that was at the Stars gig .."there were several things going on .. audience expectation and the dysfunctional PA. To this point Syd had fun playing around Cambridge without being recognised. He semed to be having a Deja Vu moment at this gig A throwback and he wasn't enjoying being on stage". Syd was a brilliant gifted man whose musical legacy will truly "shine on"

@wolves750 the VH1 documentary was so lousy and incomplete it boggles the mind why they had their way with the oriignal.

@TAXavier we dont even know if he had schizophrenia, when you do THAT much acid, the chemical backlash is just immense, schizophrenic or not, that much will creep up on you and turn your brain to mush...

More like, "kids, don't be born with latent schizophrenia that unlocks faster because of drugs".
TAXavier 2 years ago 19
@TAXavier Exactltly!! I can't stand when people feed into that mythology. Syd took no more or less drugs than many of his peers and yet the majority of them went on to live mentally stable lives (Keith Richards being a shining example). Almost every description of Syd during those yrs screams schizophrenia. He's straight out of a textbook. The apathy, word finding difficulties, retreat from social life, confusion, etc are all symptoms of schizophrenia which tends to manifest between ages 18-24
ritter89 1 year ago
@TAXavier if you're predisposed, schizophrenia will get you.....at some point. regardless of what you do.

Might very well be the case.

He touched so many lives throughout his remarkable music, mine too.
Syd inspired musicians around the world, especially Pink Floyd. He was a musical innovator, and genius. Thank you, Syd!

alot of people don't like robyn hitchcock because in this full interview which is on the DVD he comes across as a bit of a wanker, which he does a bit, but i think he really does Dominoes justice.

@INSFAN86 Anyone who needs LSD to open up their minds and gain inspiration seriously lacks creativity and imagination. Frank Zappa was as clean as a whistle and stranger and more creative than almost any artist in modern history. LSD is an easy way to finding new ways to look at things, and at the same time, a dangerous way.
felizginato12 1 year ago 2

bmattson08 1 year ago
@bmattson08 Constant diet of chemicals is NOT good, Even if you are talking normal ingestion, moderation is the key. I think it was highly in the scene before laws were cracking down on drugs of all known dangerous types. "weed" is probably less a real concern then the others, considering draconian laws on that.

I have a bit of trouble grasping this. How bad was syd hurt? Did he ever show any sign of recovery? Did he ever take therapy? I know they mention that they tried to get him into therapy and it wouldn't work but surely some must have had some kind of influence on him? Or the ability to force him for his own good?
makotoyoshikuni 2 years ago
If you've ever taken hallucinogens, particularly acid, you'd know that he'd discovered something about himself that made him realize something he didn't like
It's deeply personal and representative of the times
badreligion 2 years ago 3
