@0mgithuge It's a harness, not a chain. They are made of nylon with metal rings or fasteners (although I have one that is exclusively nylon with only a plastic adjuster). Birds can learn to wear them just as a dog learns to wear a collar, and it is much safer if you take your bird out, even if the wings are clipped.Even a clipped bird can fly a lot further than one might think, and possibly end up in danger because they are flying in panic and are not aware of where the are going.
cockatoo's are very attached to owners too, once they stay with you long enough.
i seen on tv once, on harry's practice, a cockatoo, lost his owner to heart failure, and his son, took the bird, and the bird started ripping his feathers out, and due to that, he needed to keep the parrot with him at ALL times, otherwise he'd eventually have nothing left to rip apart, other then himself.
so yeh, dont get one, unless you know you have time on your hands, theyre harder to take care of then kids.
@Grendel938 Well, in Finland, they call it "Suomi". I think the only reason they have "F"'s in Finland is because of Sweden. I am assuming, however, that that was Suomi.
i used to have a cockatoo......she was MEAN :[ u couldnt hold her without her cursing (she learned it from previouse owner) and biting and she loved to scream like a fire alarm at 1:00AM in the morning
I am lucky enough to have these on my property in the thousands, in the wild. I dont need to have one as a caged or tethered pet. Very clever, but very noisy birds.
Anyone who thinks these sounds are random or fake is wrong. Australian Cockatoos are highly intelligent and can not only say words or names but can speak entire phrases! They are also very social and curious and are great problem solvers! Love them!!!
my friend has 1 same species...& no its not fake..no need to fake them when theres real ones, theres even 1 on youtube that does math problems and more.
Cockatoos are companion birds that require TONS of effort and attention. You have to do a LOT of pre-study before you can own and care for a large parrot. DO NOT get one unless you really want to deal with a lot of trouble involved!
@Halpin2006 I agree 100%. I have an umbrella cockatoo. Although I love him with all my heart, it is like having a 2 year old that will NEVER grow up. They aren't like a cat who is self sufficient, or a finch that you can't really hold. These guys need loads of attention and care. They require tremendous amouts of patience. If you'r thinking of getting one, borrow someone's child and let them throw food all over your home, scream in tantrums, and demand your attention. It's about the same.
@Halpin2006 Great advice! I have a Citron Cockatoo. I love her to death, but don't think I could have handled a parrot when I was younger and wasn't settled down yet. They're not good birds for apartments and they're expensive to keep....you have vet bills (not all vets treat birds so it's good to find a specialist), toys, food, and the cage alone is a major expense.
@kitzlaihel Get a budgie because you want a budgie, not as training for a bigger bird. In the end the bird would just suffer because you don't want it for it, but something else.
@Halpin2006 agreed, also people need to remember that these Sulphur Crested cockatoos can live up to 80 years.
when you buy them here in Australia some pet bird shops ask you what you plan is for when YOU get old and the bird is only "middle aged", some people get offended but its actually a good question.
@hot318 I understand. As a middle aged couple with young Greys, we are currently trying to make plans for the future of our babies. It is sad to think about, but it is a reality that must be faced. Anyone who does not like the question is someone who is not thinking of their birds and is not planning for their bird's welfare, and should not be buying one.
Oho! Hämmästyin kun yhtäkkiä kuuli suomea XDD (etsin aluksi Harmaapapukaija klippejä englanniksi) XDD ihana. Eikös tuo ole molukkienkakadu? Vai keltatöyhtökakadu?

@chris103050 lol, "aussie twat!" that would be offensive if we Aussie's actually used the word twat.
I thought people from Swansea were smart enough to know that "twat" is a pommie word rarely (if at all) used out side of the UK. obviously not.
