"Memphis Blues", written 1909, published 1912. Although usually subtitled "Boss Crump", it is a distinct song from Handy's campaign satire, "Boss Crump don't 'low no easy riders around here", which was based on the good-time song "Mamma Don't Allow It."
he is not the father of the blues. if you read his wiki page, you will find that he overheard a black vagabond artist plucking on his guitar with a blade of the jackknife producing a kind of sound that struck him as haunting and obsessive, which was to influence his music. so to say that he is father is a stretch. i would even go further to say that even the vagabond black artist wc had overheard was not the inventor himself. if you want to trace the roots you should go further back.
Handy certainly did not perform in the Victor Military Band, which was an all-white studio organization. He did record for Columbia in 1917 with an orchestra of black Memphis & Chicago musicians, check Handy's Orchestra of Memphis on youtube
Heyy! (PLEASE REPLY TO THIS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE)
I need a little bit of help with a school music project. I've found out that W.C.Handy founded blues music. However, please could you tell me what year this piece came out? (THAT'S MEMPHIS BLUES)
Thanks for posting this. I am now reading his autobiography "Father of the Blues". A great novel. Listening to his famous music adds to the enjoyment of learning about this man's lfe. Thank you.
@Islander971 WC. Handy wasn't the father of the Blues. Charlie Patton was the father of the blues. Handy heard Patton at a train depot in the south and claimed the music for himself. he popularized it. The blues has been here long befor handy discoverd it.
is there singing?

He definitely was not the father of blues but a pioneer. A very important icon in the evolution from blues to jazz.
