  • How longgg does that scar last! OMG!

  • i got to shriners hospital too :D mines in sacramento california, they are so nice :) they make scoliosis not seem so bad,im going again next week to get my brace im nervous and excited :P

  • @AlexisRamosx You went to the Shriners Hospital in Sacramento? Me too! I had scoliosis surgery last year there. =D

  • Hey, so it has been a few years after your surgery. How are you feeling now? Do you have any problems at all? I had the surgery 11 months ago and i just want to know what to expect!

  • @xokatiemae oh im perfectly fine!! nothing's ever gone wrong. every once in a while i'll twist wrong or something and there will be a really sharp pain but thats about it!

  • @MsMonicaFaith goood i'm so gald! i hope it stays that way!

  • I have a 30 degree and my back is increasing. It is killing me right now. I have a brace I don't wear it because it hurts alot. And I don't want surgery. Does it hurt alot?

  • @happyperson541 yes i luv shriners!!!! they r the best! i had mine done in Shreveport, Louisiana! i luv it there!! im sad i turned 18 and now i cant go back =((

  • This is fantastic!! ♥ I'm getting the surgery next month: April 14th. I have four curves: 30, 73, 82, and 41. I made a scoliosis channel; this one! Feel free to check it out any time! :)

  • @lookatmycurves11 thats great that your having the surgery! after its done and over with you will never have to worry about it again! and great that sounds awesome.....i love the name of it, too cute!

  • @JuanalOVESx3 oh well i hope it goes well!

  • @JuanalOVESx3 ok they may not want to do surgery yet cuz ur still growing but idk they usually wait til after ur done growing to do the surgery

  • @JuanalOVESx3 your welcome, and im sorry i wish there was more they could do, i mean if its endangering ur organs im sure thay would do something about it, but it depends on how old you are. how old are you?

  • @JuanalOVESx3 it just depends on what your doctor thinks, my curves were over 50 so idk.

  • Heyy there :) i have scoliosis myself and i had the operation which unfortunately went a bit wrong i live in the UK and i have set up and my chanel supports others with scoliosis and if you live in the UK you can also come on trips out with us and come to our events, but even if you don't live in the UK my chanel is still a place to go if you just want to moan about backpain or ask questions or just anything really we aim to help everyone in the best way possible so go on take a look! :D

  • @Ashh26 im mexicodiesel...the one who put the video up...i just have another account. um ok the pain lasts a while like prolly 2 months but they give you good medicine so its ok, ummmm till u get the incision wet.....um idr they will prolly tell you, im thinking dont get it wet til it starts healing. and lifting...u cant lift anything heaver than a plate of food for a few months and nothing over 5 lb for like a year.

  • hi... how long does the pain last && how long before you can get your incision wet && do reg. stuff likee liftingg

  • i have scholiosis to. and unfortionitly the hospital said i would have to have surgery which i have know had. just a few weeks ago i got told that they had put a screw in wrong and that i might be parralized (not walk again) so im just waiting for the result. i had two braces one a back brace which wasnt working and then i had a neck brace which was very uncomfertable, the neck brace went all the way up to my neck. that didnt work either. when i was 8 i had surgery. and i still have more to go

  • did you stay in the small bed the whole time?

  • Just thought I'd let you all know that I have started a FaceBook page called "Scoliosis Survivors" for all those who have Scoliosis and who want to talk or ask questions... So if you have facebook you can look that up. :)

  • no not yet sometime this month

  • yes unfortunetly i have to have more sugery:(

  • @1998hollistergirl oh no! do you know when?

  • This is awesome =) I am getting the surgery soon, I find out on Thurday when I am getting it(Sometime in Nov-Dec.) I have a 70* Curve and *50 degree lower curve. I was wondering if you could answer some questions I have, the might be weird aha but if you could that would be great!

-Was it weird having a catheter? Awkward?

    -How did you have showers?

-How did you go to the bathroom after you could walk?

-What is the worst part of the surgery?

    Thanks! =)

again amazing video, its so inspirational!

  • @sammysamgirl1 well first off good luck with the surgery and it's not as bad as everybody makes it seem! ok the catheter was one of the best things lol they put it in while your asleep and u don't have to get up to go to the bathroom its right there, cuz after a 2 or 3 hour surgery you will not wanna move for a few days so the catheter is a good thing! in the hospital i didn't take a shower idt but idk i can't remember but afterwards you can take a shower as normal just be careful not to fall.

  • @sammysamgirl1 and you go to the bathroom like you would normally do. the worst part for me was the pain but they give you GREAT medication for that!lol and every 2 hours they had to roll u from ur back to one side, and from ur side to ur back, then to ur other side. they did this so you wouldn't get bed sores...i think. and after u get home the first few days will be ruff but they get better cuz like 2 weeks after my surgery i went on vacation,do u no if ur gonna have to wear a brace or not?

  • @mexicodiesel Okay thanks! and no i don't have to wear a brace :)

  • @sammysamgirl1 thats good that you don't have to wear a brace, i did and it was very annoying!

  • @mexicodiesel Ya I heard they were super annoying!

  • @mexicodiesel Same here, i had mine about 13 days ago and i have to wear a brace for 3 months!

  • mee too!

  • yea but i might not have to have it yayz! ill give u the news as soon as i get it

  • @1998hollistergirl yay! ok let me know! i hope you don't have to have it!

  • yes unfortunetly...... i have another curve it really stinks

  • @1998hollistergirl oh my goodness well i hope it goes well! when are you having it done?

  • im sure you did great! i might have to have another surgery im so sad:(

  • @1998hollistergirl another scoliosis surgery?

  • hi im Celena im 13 i have scoliosis my spine is shaped as and S my top curve is 66degreese and my bottum curve is 45 i found out i have my surgry at the beging of nov. we found out i had scoliosis on good luck friday (wasnt much good luck for me >.<)

anywho i have a question after youre surgry could you go right back to school for a whole day or did you have to go to school for like half a day and did you wait a couple weeks until you got to go back to school

  • @celenacookiedough well i am homeschooled so i didn't have to go back, but after surgery i was so tired and your back hurts and you might have to wear a huge brace and its uncomfortable sitting in the same position for a long time. and you have to be super careful with your back, so half a day would prolly be best if you even go.

  • Can you still have fun? Can you still run and do anything like normal? :'( I'm afraid. I think I have a scoliosis :'((

  • @irrajustin14 yeah you can still do everything with scoliosis i didn't even know i had it until i was like 15. and after surgery u can do most the same stuff too but not roller skating or ice skating. but u will be fine!

  • @mexicodiesel I'm really afraid. :( SUPER. I don't want to check my doctor cuz I'm afraid that he will might tell me that I have scoliosis :(

  • @irrajustin14 well you need to check with ur doctor cuz if u catch it early enough they can sometimes stop it. but if he does tell u that u have scoliosis its not the end of the world, you will be fine! u can go on living normally just like u were. but i would go check with a doctor just to be sure.

  • @mexicodiesel I ahte my parents :'( They won't believe me that I might have scoliosis :'(

  • @irrajustin14 well if your parents won't take u to the doctor sometimes you can ask your school nurse to check you for it. all she has to do is to have you bend over and she will trace ur spine with her finger. or you just bend over and ur back could be un-level like mine was, one side of my back came up higher than the other. but you should ask your school nurse to check it for u.

  • @mexicodiesel Okay2x :) Thank you so much. mwah. love yah. take care ;)

  • @irrajustin14 haha your welcome!

  • @irrajustin14 do you mean after the surgery? please don't be afraid. I have had the surgery and i was performing and dancing again only weeks after the procedure. i can run and swim and dance and pretty much anything i want to do. even before my procedure, i wasn;t limitited to anything. you can get through it! keep your chin up high!

  • im having this surgery tomorrow :(

  • @destinwebkinz oh i hope it goes well and you will come out fine! where are you having the surgery?

  • Im gonna get surgury in a few weeks. How big were ur curves? Mine are 45 and 70.

  • hi my name is kara i will be 4 months postop 11 days i had scoliosis surgery at the uc davis medical center in sacramento preformed by Dr Gupta on march 10 2010

  • thank you for this video - im 24 and i am from Ireland - i would love 2 get this op.(im over 40 deg.) - did it take you long to recover?

  • @clubshaz well i was out of the hospital in like 4 or 5 days and a week or 2 after that i went on vacation, u can still do things but u get tired more quickly but after about 8 weeks u r much better but still a little weak

  • Comment removed

  • o cool!..thanks i need surgery in about 6 months..:(

  • @MrShelley1996 really? where r u having it done??

  • Mexicodiesel

I commend you on having the surgery! I was always too afraid to go through with it.

  • do you get cructhes after surgrey?x

  • @MrShelley1996 no u don't get crutches, cuz u would have to use muscles to use them. so i just had a back brace on and nothing else.

  • i also have scoliosis probly not as bad as yours but i know what your going thro its not that bad that i need surgery but i still how wat your going thro

  • Comment removed

  • hi i'm also going to have surgery for scoliosis but not at shriners because i'm going to be 18 years old this month on the24. i was a shriners patient from 1992 to2009 at both SF and sacramento shriners hospitals

  • Hello, I have scoliosis and I am 32 years old. I had surgery in 1989. I wanted everyone to know I am so glad I had the surgery. I now have a beautiful 9 year old daughter and I had her naturally. Anything is possible after surgery,

  • @angelic7725

Hi Angelic I am 42 and was diagnosed at 16. I have always been too afraid to have the surgery. As a teen it wasn't bad enough for surgery and I was so glad back then they told me I would have to learn how to walk all over again. I cry every time I see my x-rays.

  • I have been told yesterday by sick kids hospital i need surgery,

and im very scared of it, as i just turned 14.

Id like to ask you a question since i was too nervous to ask my male doctor.

besides the obvoius discomfort, i wanted to know if after the surgery does everything like uneven hips and breasts get less noticable?

or does it stay the same?

    Thank You,

    xox JonasRoxMySox xox

  • oh wow i am sorry u are going to have to go through this! but yes i will answer and questions you have!

yes the uneven things are almost unnoticeable. do u have any more questions?

  • Nope im good

    thank you soo much (:

i didnt want to ask my doctor because even though he speicalizes in this i was uncomfortable.

As again i say thank you

    (:

  • i'm glad i can help! if u do have any questions later just ask, i hope everything goes well!

  • @mexicodiesel thyank you so much for answering that, im going to have to get surgery sometime this year my spine is under 90 degrees. and i was scared that after the surgery that everything would still be uneven, thanks so much!!

  • i went through tht too

  • good vid im waiting to go for surgery myself its sometime in jan and i cant wait to get it fixed and back to life

    thanks

    x

  • great i'm glad u r doing better!

  • Hey!

I just came back to say thank you very much for your help and advice before my operation , and of course your video! I had my operation 6 weeks ago now , in hospital i needed a blood transfusion, got some fluid on my left lung and then developed pneumonia. But My curves are both 10 degrees now , and i gained nearly 2 inches in height! I have nearly no back pain now but with occasional flare ups , still feel tired and weak at times but thats to be expected! Thanks again

  • wow 2 inches that's amazing! i'm sorry about u getting pneumonia! i hope ur better!

  • My daughter is having the surgery in 2 weeks w/a 65 Degree curvature, I want to know, how soon after the operation were you able to travel on a plane? and how many inches did you grow afterward?

  • i hope her surgery goes well! i had to fly home on a plane and it was 4 or 5 days after my surgery! i did fine! just tell them to give her some pain medication before you get on the plane so she won't be in much pain and she will sleep through a lot of it! i grew about 2 and a half inches over night! literally!lol!

  • I'm getting the surgery on August 31. That's the end of this month! I'm sooooo nervous! What did the pain feel like? Was it bad?

  • i can't lie to you.... it's hard but again i can't lie IT'S WORTH IT. if you want add me as afriend and we can talk about it. don't worry. u'll be fine.

  • I had surgery on March 29 of this year.. at Miami Children Hospital. The pain was pretty bad the first week and second week. All I did was sleep most of the time. Your back will be numb. As of now my back still hurts a little and itches but is much better than before. My curvature was 60 degrees and now it is 20 degrees.

  • thanks

i will definately need a pre - med before !

  • Oh thats okay a lot of people dont know !

I have a question whats it like when you first wake up from the surgery ??

  • i'm sorry to say ur in alot of pain when u first wake up! but they usually give u a button to press to get more pain meds!lol!

  • i have 10% :( i might just lose it

  • seriously. you didnt take the back brace??

  • take it?

  • well, i mean they give you an option. and seriously. i have scoliosis too. its not like the end of the world.

  • hi! r u going to have to wear a back brace?

  • I need to thank you for this video. It really help us when we fell down about the surgery. :)

This video gives hope to everyone will get this surgery.

My surgery was 1 year and 3 months ago. I fell absolutly fine now . No pain, Nothing.

  • and its keeping me from doing sports, and my favorite, swim team. also, since u've already had the surgery, could u tell me how it went? did it hurt ALOT? and how long were you out of sckool? what happens 2 u AFTER the surgery? please answer me back on this, thank you. :) btw, great video.:)

  • well i have never played sports so idk how it would affect that! but the pain was bad for a while but they give you good medication for it and i went on vacation 2 weeks after i had the surgery! so it was fine but i am homeskooled so idk how long u would be out of skool. and i had to wear a brace for 6 weeks after surgery and i couldn't pick up anything over 10 pounds for a year.

  • im only 13 right now and i've got a bad case of scoliosos. my backs been hurting a little bit lately and it hurts sometimes when i breathe on my bottom right side.i havent told my mom about it yet,so she doesnt kno. but she wants me 2 wait and have the surgery next summer.she wants me 2 be fully grown. but i dont know if i can wait that long. i tried the whole brace thing, it didnt help me. the only way is 4 me 2 have surgery.i know my moms scared 4 me 2 do it this summer, but i really need it.

  • well if u need it then u should tell her and u should get it done!

  • were i was 24 turning 25 yrs old they could not get my curves all the way out... i went from 90 degrees to about 40 degrees still with two curves but it helped out so much! I was so happy i did it. I was in the hospital for 7 days, i was back to work in 4 months light duty... i still have some trouble due to a small curve in my lower spine but im dealing with it till i cant handle it now more.... i recommend it to anyone to get it done if needed!

  • Hello my name is Angie, Im 27 and i had the surgery done Sept 05. I had two 90 degree curves it was rough..... I did the brace thing when i was 13-14 yrs old, i really didn't like that! so i quit wearing it... time goes by and i turn 21 getting married and then had a kid at 22 still with scoliosis. i got divorced and found a way to get my surgery done.. my daughter was 2 yrs old when i got it done... it took them 11 1/2 hrs to do what they could.

  • yeah um...my mom had STAPLES in hers to close it up!!!wow its come a long way!i am wearing a brace to try to STOP it!!i am just SO scared of having surgry

  • My girlfriend and I just took our daughter who is 3 to the Calgary Childrens Hospital yesterday where they did x-rays and gave us the beginning diagnosis. She has congenital scoliosis with a 31 degree curve just below her neck. The MRI has been ordered for 4 months from now. Just watching your video made me smile. Thanks for showing people that this can be overcome.

  • Your welcome, thank you for watching the video!

and i hope everything goes well with her!

  • did you have a herington rod?did u hve 2 hav stpls? 2 close the cut?did you get it removed?the rod i mean.did u hve 2 wear a body cast after the surgery?sorry 4 all the questions :P my mom wants to know

  • no it's ok ask away!lol! that's why i put the video up! but um idk what kind of rod i have but it stays in the rest of ur life they don't take it out.

and they use stitches to close the cut, and the stitches just disolve! and i only wore a back bracefor 6 weeks, any more questions??

  • hi. i am from Peru, i am 22 years

God bless i understand English less. thanks

  • i had my surgery at a Shriners hospital in the USA and it was free but you have to be under 18 to go to that hospital.

are you going to have the surgery done in Peru?

the surgery is not as bad as everyone says!

    any more questions?

  • hey im from australia i have about a 50 degree scoliosis i will probably have to get the operation but im pretty freaked out about it. i skateboard which means jumping down big stuff just wondering how much flexability do you feel you have lost (twisting side to side, bending sideways and can you still touch your toes) also does it hurt to jump around or jump off high things.

thanks i would really apriciate a reply

  • u can't really do anything for a year after sugery but after that u should be fine and can do just about anything.about flexibility, u CAN twist side to side, bend side ways, and touch ur toes.

and the surgery should be fine. after i had mine i was up and walking around 2 or 3 days later and 2 weeks later i went on vacaion! the pain is alittle bad but not too much, anyways they give u good drugs!lol! any other questions?

where r u having the it done at?

  • oh wow my grandson Buddy just had surgery at Shriner's Hospital in Shreveport, La. you guys were in the very same room, the very same bed, how are you doing now? Check Buddy's story out on my page, I had to make 3 videos to cover it all.. Aren't they just awesome at Shriners? Good Luck to you. Linda

  • yes i love shriners hospitals they r amazing! i am doing so good, thank you. thanx for watching the video.

  • i went thru my surgery in aug 2008. it was worth it but i was really scared! i want to help people with scoliosis by telling them my story and helping them find more information about scoliosis. you can make it! youre not alone.

    scoliosisteenager (dot) wordpress (dot) com

  • that is so kool! yes i want to work at a shriners hospital one day to help people with scoliosis.

  • The worst thing about my surgery was that the nurses had to rotate my body every 2 hrs in the middle of the night and one time they turned me to one side and it hurt so bad that I was screaming and crying. Fortunately for all of the listeners, they got me comfortable again. The surgery is not a scary thing and just think about how lovely your back will look after it is done!!!

  • omg i so agree ur back will be so awesome and straight! and yes the rolling was killer but it's worth it!

  • i havin surgery soon and can you eat like loads before the surgery so u dont wake up hungery

(btw im not fat only 8 stone 57kilos)

  • i had surgery @ around 10:00 am so they told me i couldn't eat anything after midnight the night b4. and after surgery u can't eat or drink anything for 6 hours!

  • Im 16 and I'm getting my surgery in 10 days :( My spines over 50 degrees too.... :( its tough.

    x

  • wow i hope it goes well, where r u having it done @?

  • I had the surgery at 42 years of age[100 degree curve]its been hard for me ,but you will do fine, you should be pretty normal, just be carful.I still have a 45 deg. curve.

  • OMG ! I am in france but i english and I have a scoliosis first my top was 29 and bottom 12 then I got a plaster cast and it was 6 and 4 i had another one and then my corset but know it has not changed anything and its worst!! 30 and 28! I might have to have an operatiion if my back moves anymore... How was it? Does it have any affect on your life now? or is it really difficult did it hurt How much time did you spend in the hospital?

  • now see im having the same problem and my mom doesnt belive that i really want the surgery but you know we all have to stick together

  • wow u had to go through alot!

the surgery wasn't as bad a people kept telling me.

my life is the same nothing really changed.

i spent like 4 days in the hospital and then went home

  • Thank you so much!! I am scared but I am sure it will be alright I think they are gonna maybe put two iron rods on the back of my spine. It will take 4 HOURS!!! I don't know how they do it in the states. How long was the operation and what did they do?? I kinda scared because I am only 13 I know I should be stron but it's hard.... At 30 degrees they already say my Scoliosis is critical and stuff but you having 50 degrees is ... There is actually no words.... I can't beleive it....

  • they said the surgery would take 4 hours but it only took about 2.

after u come out of surgery u sleep on ur back with a oxygen mask on for 6 hours. and u can't eat or drink anything in that time, i think that was the hardest thing for me!

and they roll you, first u lay on ur back for 6 hours then they roll u to ur right side and u sleep there for a few hours, then back to ur back, then u roll to ur left side.

u might have a drain in ur back for a day or so after surgery.

  • Thanks!! Now I know what it's like in America I just hope that it's kinda the same thing in France =D!! Thanks for everything!! Lauren

  • i'm glad i could help!

if u have anymore questions just ask!

  • How Long did you have to sleep on your back ?? Your so brave putting your ordeal on the Internet! I admire your bravery!!

  • heyy im 13, and next month im haveing my operation, ive done all the stuff like lung test and the nerve test and x-rays, but im terified of the sugery and please tell me what it was like :/ xx glad it went well for you xx

  • al the prep. might scare u but it is not as bad as people say i was scared too. but it is alot better than they say. well i was asleep for most of the prosses. but u have 2 sleep on ur back and can't eat or drink for 6 hour after the surgery.

what else would u like to know?

  • I have a double curvature of the spine...my top curve is 31 degrees and my bottom curve is 35 degrees...I'm 12

They have decided to put me in a brace and I need to wear it for 23 hours a day...please message me...my mom didn't undergo treatment for her scoliosis and I have noone to talk to and I'm scared and I don't want to get a brace! THEY ARE WEIRD!!! Gosh.....I wish I didn't get scoliosis....

  • i had to wear a brace for 23 hours a day too, after my surgery it wasn't very fun. when did u find out u had scoliosis, where r u being treated?

  • I found out when I was 9...I'm being treated by a Dr.Reing. I used to be treated by dr.Mason at A.I. Dupont Hospital....But now I'm being treated by Dr.Reing...

  • oh, in what state?

so do u have any questions?

  • ummm...virginia...and yeah

what was it like the whole process..like getting the brace...I'm so scared.... :(

  • we they just measure u for the brace and they put it on u after surgery.

u stay in the hospital for a few days and they get u up and start walking u.

it's not as bad as alot of people say cuz i was so scared too! but it is fine!

  • .......ok thank u so much! :)

  • ur welcome

  • me too i advise you not to do what im doing and not wearing it see im an indavidual that wants the surgery... talk to me later

  • I'm going to wear it..but I do want the surgery..I want the curve gone and I don't want to be uneven anymore...

  • -tear- (seriously) im with u totally my brace for me is just making the pain worse for me i hope it works for you

  • I commend you for going through the surgery so well. I had surgery in 1989 a long time ago. They did things a little differently back then... my scar is from close to the top of my neck down to my tail bone. I am married now with an 8 year old and had no complications. I know God was with me that day to make me go through the surgery like a breeze... glad to see you made it so well.

  • thanks and wow that is a long scar!

  • ik moet hier om huilen

  • just got the brace a week ago. hopefully this will lower my chances of needing surgery. but damn this brace is ANNOYinG!!! igotta wear it for2 years =/ 20 hours a day

  • i hope it helps, but yes the braces are annoying! and at least ur is only 20 hours mine was 23 hours
