To both bnz500 and GamerDude... First off, not all turbo cars come with a bov/recirc. from the factory. My engine never never got one. Also they DO help performance if certain things are taken into consideration. minimal boost loss between shifts for one(as opposed to surge) and better throttle response in some applications.

Mabey all NEW turbo cars do, but the

CA18DET came standard with nothing but a side mount intercooler. no bypass recirc or anything. Also old school GNX and GMC cyclone/typhoons, Im pretty sure didnt have one either bacause they were automatic (no ned for one) look into it. As to where the exess pressure goes, Thats what compressor surge comes from, the pressure backing up and stoping or spining the turbine backwards momentarily.

My car doesnt have one. VL BT1 Interceptor (RB30). They are gay because they do nothing except make a shitty sound people heard on the fast and furious. Yeah they stop surging but surge does nothing to your turbo anyway. Its just a gimmic for little kids.

Actually it doesnt. When they were first marketed years ago, the makers used to say it "minimised lag" in between shifts on manual cars. Now idiots on here talk about surge blah blah blah. My car surges all day everyday on 18psi, and it has for the past 6 years, and its a 20 year old car!. I have no shaft play, everything is up to scratch because i maintain it correctly. BOVs are a stupid gimmick for the fast and furious kids. Look up "vl turbo dose" and youll see what im talking about

if they didnt the turbo would spool backwards when the throttle was closed...an worst for a supercharger...it would bend the fins (there connected to a belt that forces them around even if the airs comin back thru)

Air would never, ever flow backwards out of the intake manifold of an engine while running, much less hard enough to spool a turbo backwards or bend the fins of a centrifugal supercharger. Not all turbo engines even have blowoff valves and, while it is possible to do so, it is not at all necessary to run them on supercharged engines. RICE.

When the throttle plate slams shut, theres a massive surge in pressure before the throttle plate. Say the turbocharger is pushing 15psi at full throttle, then the driver lets off the gas. The turbocharger is still spinning at that same speed, but the throttle is closed. The resulting surge in pressure can stop the turbocharger in its tracks. Going from 100,000+RPM to a dead stop is enough to shred the inducer in a fraction of a second.
