  • good movie it was a sad ending but still good

  • Ridiculous fake "bluegrass" nasal whine, as fake as the very Jewish-looking Steinfeld's pretending to be an Arkansan.

  • It's useless to argue over taste.

If you like the song, fine, stick around and listen to it. If you don't, fine, just don't be an asshole about it.

  • Beautiful song. It could be considered as an homage to "The Night Of The Hunter", one of the beautiest film in history and usualy used as a inspiration for the Cohen brothers.

  • beautiful hym!!

  • Beautiful!

  • you are all idiots, she sings quite clearly

  • It's a beautiful hymn !!!

  • My impression of what I THINK the lyrics are based

    on Iris DeMent's pronunciation:

    -

"Oh what a whoa-shep, what a joint of pine. Laining

on the hever hasting farms, What a bosit ness What

a piece of pine, Laining on the hover hasting harms

Laining Laining! Slave a secure fwom all alarm. Laining!

Laining! Laining on the hasting harms. Oh how to sweet

to wall bean this pillow way, Laining on the hastin' harms

Oh how brih the whah"...oh, never mind!

  • @thegrinchl7 Really,really cute--think you're funny?

  • @grundoon51 - Can YOU understand what she's saying?

Oh, let me guess...it's not the words that are important...

    it's the feeling"? Ugh!

  • @thegrinchl7 Yes, I DO understand what she's saying, and yes, the words are important, but you don't seem to get either one...

  • @grundoon51 - If the words were that important, WHY would

she slur the pronunciation so badly? And why does she sing

from her NOSE instead of her diaphragm? Only Alfalfa from

Our Gang has ever gotten away with that!

  • @thegrinchl7 This song is about as hard core Southern country as it gets, and many of the people who sing it and mean it, not being conservatory trained, actually sound like that. If it makes you crazy, why do you keep listening to it?

  • @grundoon51 - Well, thankfully most of us have better sense than to brag about what happens in the south. If it's not hanging blacks from a sour apple tree it's their penchant for having sex with their own daughters. I actually enjoy Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanlely and Emmylou Harris. But this woman needs a garden hose taken to her. As for me being here...if she can single handedly ruin one of my favorite movies (True Grit) with that HONK, I can ruin one of her videos.

  • @thegrinchl7 If you can't spell Ralph's name you shouldn't brag and you really shouldn't proclaim yourself superior to anybody--your claim to being better than anybody is worthless--learn some manners, if you can

  • @thegrinchl7 Your not that bright are you, this woman has often work with Emmy lou Harris.she gets what good about this.if you don't don;t listen insulting comments make no sense.know one made you come here and listen to this,

  • @mbsnyderc - If you hope to insult someone by calling them

on their intelligence (or lack of it) it might be prudent that you

get the grammar right. "YOU'RE not that bright" is the correct

use as in the contraction "YOU ARE". Not "your"...which is the

possessive form as in YOUR house or YOUR account or YOUR

    bad grammar. Got it, hillbilly?

  • @thegrinchl7 I'm not and English teacher, and you had no trouble understanding what i meant.comment stands as it is.i didn't go what a video of someone i don't like just to insult them.

  • @mbsnyderc - If Iris DeMent can single handedly RUIN one

of the best films to come out of Hollywood in about 20 years,

I don't mind crapping on one of her videos. This voice, this

shrill, discordant, POLICE SIREN OF A NASAL TWANG

makes me physically ill. That half the people at showing I

attended damned near jumped out of their chairs when they

heard this woman's honk, makes me think YOU are in the

    minority.

  • @thegrinchl7 Your a simple minded moron. you don't understand anything your talking about. get a life and get of this obsession you have with a stupid movie.you not from America so you don't understand this kind of music, you don't know the History or your thick skull would understand why this was the perfect song to use in the movie.just because your don't like it don't mean anything.go get a girl friend and stop wasting your life arguing with people.

  • @thegrinchl7 yeah this defintely isnt one of her better songs. check out "inspite of ourselves" with iris and john prine.

  • @thegrinchl7 Gee, mister, you're so dumb. How'd you get that way?

  • The ending was really sad for some reason, this song was perfect in that scene.

  • the only movie that has made me weep.

  • I love this sing as I loved the film, and it actually restored my faith in religion..

  • This song has over 230 000 views and I'm proud to say 100 000 of them were me ;)

  • ikr? i'm an atheist and love this song.. even as a former christian and think religion is dumb, i can appreciate this song.

  • Iris is one of the best artist there is and ever will be.

  • @YaaYaa1968 She ain't got nothing on artists like June Carter or Loretta Lynn, but she's still good.

  • should have more hits

  • good song !!!!

  • That's the problem with people they stopped listening. Can`t believe people turned the last good pure music on earth into political fights and discussion as i see so often on you tube. Why? All you need to do is close your eyes and listen.

  • iris dement is a 13 out of 10

  • the 1969 True Grit with John Wayne is still the best

  • @cowboyUSMC1371 i hate to disagree as they are both great movies, but...the remake is much sadder. And i think rooster is more of a badass in the new one... i mean every hero has to have a cool beard and a cool voice. it just makes it a better movie that he dies too.

  • This song was the perfect ending for a perfect western movie, love it!!!

  • It killed me when she missed Cogburn by 3 days

  • Just seen True grit and when i heard this song it broke my heart.what a beautiful song!!

  • thank you lord by bringing yourself to me through this song thank you

  • I love this song and the way Iris sings it. Pure soul and emotion. If every naysayer in the world hated it, I'd be the last one standing, playing it, over and over.

  • @dsdon175 you're my hero dude

  • Time just gets away from us...

  • This is the song Robert Mitchum sings in "The Night of the Hunter."

  • this was played at my uncles funeral......not a dry eye in the house.

  • A new thumbs up. She has a beautiful voice...and it's okay to say that her voice is why I like this song. It's wonderful.

  • A banda Goo Goo Dolls fez uma musica chamada "Iris" em homenagem a esta fantastica cantora...

  • @irarigi tema do filme "City of Angels" , lindo por sinal.....

  • Thumbs up if you make your voice as nasal and annoying as possible and sing this to annoy your close friends and family

  • awesome song gives u a sence of comfort

  • Time just gets away from us...

  • It's hard for people who didn't grow up with a southern gospel background to understand why we love this song. The lyrics are just so preciously beautiful. In my opinion, she did an amazing job singing it as well.

  • @JustinJets You don't have to be religious to appreciate beautiful music performed with conviction and passion. I was raised in southern California by atheists and this song still chokes me up.

  • @kaltoros well said my friend

  • @kaltoros Amen! :)

  • @kaltoros

I'm an old dyed in the wool atheist and like you I appreciate gospel music. True music of the oppressed people looking for a better life

  • I love this song, it makes any worries disappear.

  • sounds like a young dolly parton great voice

  • People don't live this way anymore, unless it on the movies. Love the song.

  • maybe the Cohen brothers just needed an ancient hymn sung as only Iris Dement could sing...

But maybe its lyrics will resound one day in someone's fearful broken heart who will discover the simple words of the hymn to be true...there is nothing like the comfort of Christ everlasting arms.

  • The ending, with this song, hit's people either as very positive or freaks them out. I think it keys off of how much you identify with the Southern Protestant culture. As a product of it, to me it was heavenly and right-on! Great ending.

  • true grit has one of best ending i never seen

  • preferred how it sounded in "night of the hunter"

  • Excellent

  • Love the song but I don't really care for this version. I just can't find a better one on YT.

  • It was great to hear Iris's voice in the closing scene of True grit. She is a gem.

  • @TerryToon17 I agree!

  • Americana at its best. Wonderful performance, wonderful message, That Arm surely helps sometimes.

  • Dumbtards, this was meant to be nostalgic, to sound like the 1800s. This isn't classical music, it's folk music. If you don't like it, go somewhere else.

I think this is great within its genre.

  • @cm115252 I'm sorry, but goats just can't sing.

  • @gamlastanarn whatever those virtues might have been, they seem faded and long ago. there's not one Islamic country that i'd want to live in today. perhaps you know of one that, currently has an inkling enlightenment that i've somehow overlooked. but it's not only Islam. all religions are enemies of intellectual freedom. it's just in the west, presently they are more under control. whenever religions are allowed free reign, they smother free thought.

  • Its funny how all these musical knowalls miss the essential issue. This singer stirs the emotions, cuts right to the heart and gives credence to the words of the song. There are already enough technically perfect singers out there to help us fall asleep.

  • @burmanhands i could not agree more...that's why she's a true artist. art after all is all about communicating feelings

  • I've never heard a more abrasive version of this hymn. Too many lackluster singers try to make up for their lack of talent via excessive use of vibrato. you sound like you're singing through your nose while sitting on a dryer. LEARN TO HOLD A NOTE!

  • @jmurockstar dont talk shit

  • @FATTYshredsGNAR I'm not "talking shit"... I'm stating my opinion. Her voice is overly nasal and the use of vibrato is excessive. I doubt she could hold a steady note if she tried.

  • @jmurockstar OK you stated your opinion, now here's mine: YOUR OPINION SUCKS!!!

  • @gamlastanarn Islam and music? isn't music considered 'un-Islamic',as most of life"s pleasures seem to be.. well, except for the simple ones like,,, say... mass-murder, lol . ok, outside of that, you've answered the first part of my puzzle... want to take a stab at the 'horrible politics' part?

  • Typical of the fine touch of the Coens that they would choose this song - which

almost startling in its power & beauty - to close out the movie.

  • What a lovely tune inded!

  • @gamlastanarn how can religion inspire, such wonderful music and yet so horrible politics... can anyone explain that irony, please?

  • Beautiful song and rendition.

    14 people are tone deaf.

  • This is my song now.

  • @Alldayeveryday404.

This is an old hymn from about the period of the movie, in the late 1880s. It's simple and heartfelt. And Iris Dement is amazing. It's hard to believe people are on You Tube trolling hymns.

  • @Ricardo57ish unfortunately, it's pretty easy to believe. savages in this town!

  • Just saw this movie yesterday. It was great, sorrowful and touching. When this song played at the end, I cried like a bitch. As if bawling like a bitch in front of my family wasn't enough, I logged online to hear this song and I am still crying. Simple, yet powerful (the song). Glad to see there are still things worth watching out there.

  • Comment removed

  • i cried both times i saw the movie.....first time in the theatre. I balled right there in front of everyone, and idk what it is, the ending and message is just so powerful it touched my heart where no other movie could

  • @DiveBum18 I hear you. I almost want to make this my ringtone but i will burst into tears everytime it rings. I'll stick to vibrate.

  • Did you ever hear the sound of a lone bell ringing off in the distance with the pureness and beauty of a morning sunrise bringing in a new day? This voice seems to capture this warmth and so much more. Such a rare talent blessed with the ability to display it.

  • @Alldayeveryday404 The sun was in his eye, apparently.

  • this song is the most WORST song ever!! Leeeeeeaning, leeeaning...somebody shoot me

  • @Motmasterflash

Mot Mouth...Your only shooting yourself in the soul , you'll realize at some point that you were wrong but then it will be everlastingly to late...Get off your high horse and see there is a heaven and a hell and unless you turn to Christ for everlasting salvation you'll be lost into everlasting DAMNATION

    DangeourDange 2u

  • The new version honestly sucked. All of the characters with the excption of Rooster didn't fit the roles. John Wayne does it the best....

  • @Moragoth1 I totally agree. Forget versatile actors with six Oscar nominations like Jeff Bridges. I prefer a guy with a fake name and no acting talent whatsoever. The same monotonous, droning performance he gives in all the rest of his movies only won him the Oscar because people knew he wouldn't be alive much longer.

  • @simonbelfry ....... wow you're an idiot. I can't believe you're saying that. John Wayne is one of Jeff Bridges' inspirations..... lmfao

  • An awesome movie with an awesome song

  • such a beautiful song about losing the west.

  • Sounds like a cat being raped with a cucumber. ...I love it!

  • beautiful sound track and lyrics... loves the act of Hailee on the role of Mattie... i wish to have a daughter like that in the future... and believe many men would felt the same after they watched this film.

  • LLLLEEEEEAAAAANNIINNGGGGGGGGG

  • I meet this song in the final of True Grit. In that time, I arrived home after the cinema and I found this video, I started listening and suddently my mother screamed that I was late for school, I was in this page for 30 minutes!

  • Great movie : the meeting of John Wayne and Robert Mitchum

  • fucking beautiful

  • 神歌は突然現れると言うがまさにそうだな。

  • After watching all the memorial footage on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11, I felt that this song would be appropriate.

  • An old gospel song written in 1887.

  • I burned Tom Chaney down while listening to this song!

  • I would have cried after hearin' this here song... if it weren't for my True Grit

  • I'm the youngest daughter in a family of 9 and I bought True Grit on DVD for My Dad, for Father's Day. He loved this song

  • I loved this version of the song - I love her voice, such an old world sound - really makes one feel like they are back in the old days, sitting in one of those wood churches with hard wooden pews. I used to attend a small country church like that, many years ago - this totally takes me back. Thanks for such a beautiful channel.

  • @misshotyoga Old world=Eurasia New world=North and south America

  • I thought it was Dolly Parton at first.

But more to the point of critiquing the song.they left out the 3rd verse.

Would have been too much to ask to complete the thought?

Typical of today.People want sentiment without substance.Don’t cram “religion” down our throat. Yet, all religions are not created equal. One stand out. The authors knew.

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,

    Leaning on the everlasting arms?

I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,

    Leaning on the everlasting arms.

  • part of me hates it and part of me loves it, but all of me listens to it

  • @RJOPhoto LOL!!! Dude, I kinda felt the same way. If for hours I searched for the right words, I could not have described it better than you. IMO, It's simultaneously both semi-annoying & beautiful. Perfect choice of music for the film though.

  • As far as the use of this song in the movie goes, the "everlasting arms" can be interpreted as Rooster while he carries Mattie to safety after the snakebite. Even after Little Blackie collapses, Rooster is there for Mattie, as he was through most of the journey. Yes, the song was written as a hymm, and yet it serves another purpose through inspiration and the desire to do what is right, even when it seems impossible. Now, isn't that the point of it all?

  • @ElecDrummer couldn't agree more. That's exactly what i thought at the end of the movie as well.

  • Iris, you take me by the heart and make me smile, all the way through my soul.

I adore your talent and intelligence, Iris. ( Hope you don't mind my calling you "Iris" )

  • The first time I heard this I thought it was really wierd, but now I really love this song :)

  • This song makes me cry because it makes me think about my dad & my papaw who died a while ago.

My dad especially because he was so into the lord and it reminds me of how i'll never see him again since i am Agnostic. :(

  • @johnson1095 cool story bro

  • @Alldayeveryday404

    tHANKS. Glad to tell it.

  • @johnson1095 that's sad, but same for me. My little borther died after birth, my dad died and my mom says in a dream he came and told her he was in heaven. I'm agnostic too so guess i wont see them. wont see my mom or sisters either. i'll see the rest of the family though.

  • It took me a long time to understand she says "What a fellowship" at the beginning? It sounds like "What a wow-ship." Did she slur the F sound or something?

  • 1bloodmanchesyer619 said it was shit I ment to say he was gay for callin it shit I said it wrong I'm srry

  • @Warcraft650 Ohhhh! Sorry for fussing you out about that. lol! Thanks for sticking up for this song!!

  • Iris is truly a national treasure.

  • This made me cry so much at the end of True Grit.

  • WOW LOTS OF COMMENTS WITH A RELIGIOUS CONTENT.

    THE "ATHEIST" HAVE WEIGHED IN...

    BUT HEY..

I AIN'T EVER SEEN AN ATHIEST IN A FOX HOLE.

    :)

  • @MRMED123 That's not really true. I'm sorry, I don't want to start a YouTube argument (those always seem to end badly) but atheists have indeed come through war with their beliefs intact. And it's kind of offensive to the atheists who have sacrificed trying to fight for your country to say otherwise.

But anywho, it is a bit silly that religion has to enter into it. I'm not religious and I still love this song to pieces- even if I don't interpret it religiously I can still find it meaningful.

  • @BashaPetania I agree that the comment about Atheists was very uncalled for but this song has everything to do with religion. This whole song was based on a phrase in the Book of Deuteronomy 33:27 "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms".

  • @kaitylyna I know that it's intended as a religious song, I just meant that even if you see it in a nonreligious way it's still a meaningful and lovely song. My general point was that it didn't really matter if you wanted to see it as religious or secular as long as you found it beautiful and moving in some way.

  • @BashaPetania True! I guess you can do that with just about any song. Not everyone receives the same message from what they hear or read. I can remember singing this song ever since I was little with my mom. I guess it just holds more than one special meaning for me.

  • @MRMED123

Then you haven't been looking well enough:)

There sure are a lot of 'em hiding around with foxes!

  • @reknae Do you even know what a fox hole is? Here's a hint, it has nothing to do with an actual fox.

  • @ChelseaLionFan While there are other definitions, it is important to remember that foxes dig holes, and these holes can be referred to as foxholes.

  • @Brandonkerrfl Foxes live in dens, bonehead.

  • @ChelseaLionFan

    yeah?

  • only iris could...'send this song through you'....i think she has wings.....with that angelic voice...

  • 1bloobmanchester619 your gay for saying that it's a great song

  • @Warcraft650 u dumb for sayin tht

  • Such a great voice

  • A one in a billion voice...along with Alison Krauss.

  • great song great voice GREAT movie! very unique voice i remember only some

parts of this song my fave person from the movie was mattie

thumbs up this if u love this song and the movie

  • love the movie and love the song!

  • I was stunned by the movie True Grit. I was already tearing up, and when this song played at the end I cried like a baby.

  • She has the kind of voice and simplicity that old time country music has/or had; you carry it with you long after the song ends. amazing stuff.

  • haunting

  • Her voice is so strange and yet alluring. The right words don't exist to describe it.

  • its number 4 on favorite movies list

  • Gave the film the sad ending it deserved. Whole movie was amazing as well

  • fucking ironic

  • Good on you.

It's so touching, filled with passion....
