wow what a hack install, Flexable gas connector venting exhaust gas under the house?!?!? Even if it is open to the outside on the other end of the house its still a hazard. You Texas Plumbers would have your Plumbing License (if one is ever required there) pulled and be sued out of business if you tried doing that install in the North east. I guess thats why plumbers make less than parking attendants down there....you get what you pay for.
I never was told to do this. It's been 5 years and I notice the water isn't as hot. Can I do the vinegar for a longer time , or every month for a few months. Is the damage done irreversible?
@ThePariss333 Excellent question. Best I can tell you is that it's not going to need flushed as frequently when used with soft water, but I'd still do it every 24-30 months to be safe. Matt Risinger
Are you trying to KILL YOURSELVES?? That unit you have is an OUTDOOR MODEL, and vents directly to the environment. You need a unit that vents through a flue to the OUTSIDE!!!!!
@nestorabc This is indeed an outdoor model and it's mounted on the exterior of the house. It's located in the large crawl space under the house. The house is built on a rocky sloping lot and the water heater is located under the house next to a storage room built on that lower level. It's fully open to the outside air. Texas is a great climate to use these exterior mounted units. Thanks for commenting. Matt Risinger
Does anything change in the cleaning process if you have a scale shield installed on your noritz tankless. Its a mounted descaler and the replacements cost around 80 dollars per year.Do you know what I am referring to. Thanks for your help.
@firejoey41 I'm not familiar with that product. This flush routine featured in that video would run about $10 in supplies (White Vinegar) and about $70 for the pumps/hoses that can be reused. Seems like it would be less overall to flush your tank annually. Matt
@wtowner911 Yes, excellent comment. I'm not sure I've made it clear but I like to run some clean water through the water heater after the vinegar and definitely run water through your pump/hoses. THanks, Matt
After flushing is compleat, I would close the flush valve that leads to the pump and open the "cold water feed" to flush the vinigar and the AIR in the heater out the Blue hose into the bucket before I turn on the gas and the power. You don't want a "Dry Run" condition to happen.
@WinterHaven THANKS! It's not terribly complicated but it can be daunting if you've never seen it done before. There's little chance of you harming your units so give it a try. I agree, it's simple. Best to you, Matt
@WinterHaven Good question. In our hot/humid Austin climate I prefer to use OUTDOOR units. They are easy to service, you save on flue pipe costs since these require expensive Stainless Flue's, and there is never a worry about exhaust gases escaping into the house, there is rarely a freeze issue here but it can happen. These outdoor units have an electric heater in the boiler unit to protect from freezing but pipes connecting to it can freeze. If you go indoors, try to place it in the garage.
@MattRisinger I got an indoor unit, but it's going to be mounted in the porch. It IS enclosed, but there's going to be a steel double lumen exhaust pipe. I have very clever wasps here and I'm worried they will build nests inside the water heater. Believe me-if there is the tinest crack, they will build a nest there. Is there going to be a problem with gas leaking even with the approved exhaust system?
Mr Risinger - My Noritz has the service valves, but I don't have shut offs other than the ones on the right side of the service valves. When I put the service valves shut offs (Red & Blue color) in the "off" position I still have cold water flowing through and out the front of the service valves when I open the top Red & Blue valves. It isn't just residual water from inside the unit.
Make sure you explain right. 50 gall heater has 50.000 btu. burner is stainless flush for 45 min, leave power on gas off unit will try to ignite 3 times and go to code 11. if not servo valve is not fully open and flow will go through bypass and not 100% through heat exchanger. after leave hot hose on open cold to flush unit with cold water. if you dont know how to do it right call someone who does please. thanks, btw valves kits are sold since tankless are sold but plumbers dont do homework !

It is a good thing to show end users how to do the descale but please make sure all the facts are right. 50 gall has a 50.000 btu input. When you flush do not turn the power off only the gas. The unit will try to fire 3 times and go to code 11 thats what you want . Otherwise the servo valve is not gonna ope n fully and you need the flow through heat exchanger . The burner is stainless not Cooper. When you are finished leave the hose on hot side on and open cold to flush unit!
@Rink1964 Thanks for your comments. I think that's a great idea to leave the "out" hose attached to flush the unit when you're complete. I'm confused by your comment about 50 gallons and a 50,000 btu input. I'm pretty certain these are specified as 199,000 btu units. Thanks, Matt Risinger
@Rink1964 I have a question-why do you need to flush the vinegar out with cold water when you finish the vinegar treatment--because when you turn the water back on cold water is going to go through the pipes anyway???? ENQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!
@bbryanusmc If you don't have the service valve hookups then this flush routing is not going to be possible. I'd pay a plumber to come and add the flush kit valves. It'll be expensive but well worth it compared to a pre-mature failure of your tank from scale build up. The drain valve on the side can not be used for flushing purposes. -Matt Risinger
Matt - my manual from Noritz says to turn on the power to the unit and turn off the gas. Your video shows something very different. Am i missing something?
@Y2kXLTSport Go with your manual for sure. I'm guessing that they suggest power "on" because it somehow knows it's being cleaned. Either way Off or On it's the vinegar that's doing the cleaning action so it's probably OK either way. -Matt
I really appreciate this video. It's very clear with loads of good explanation...not just about WHAT to do, but WHY you are doing it. Thanks so much Matt. I just had a tankless water heater installed yesterday (a Tagaki T-K3-SP) at my home in Southern California and thanks to your video, I feel completely capable to perform this maintenance myself.
@Sew4Fun Thanks for the kind comments! I agree that it's important to not only know how to do the work but WHY. You'll love your new Tagaki, just don't take too long a shower now that you're on tankless... Matt Risinger
Very much appreciate the tutorial! I hate calling a plumber for something like this. I'm sure they also have better ways to spend an hour of their time .
@bjk413 No Problem. It's pretty straightforward once you've seen it done once. I think we're more prone to upkeeping equipment if we know how to do it ourselves. Matt
