I sometimes wish the US military would still use the 20mm flak gun in today's warfare. I'm thinking that gun would be great for fire bases located in Afghanistan, battling the Taliban. When the enemy rush towards the fire base, the first line of defense would be the 20mm flak gun unleashing hell.
When a flak 88 fires the barrel moves like half a meter back.
Ofcourse such a big cannon has lots of recoil, and if there were no provisions made to let the barrel slide half a meter back when firing, the gun would rip itself apart during firing due to the vibrations.
the 88mm barrels in this video remain stationary when firing, meaning that they aren't actually firing any projectiles.
@slopedarmor They fire something, and it is the gas exiting the gun, not the projectile's exit that causes the recoil, it is the same effect rockets use to get off the ground.

The 88 doesn't fire in this video, and with only gunpowder in the barrel the recoil will be less than with a projectile.
