The Shining is a minor Kubrick film and not in the league of Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, or 2001. His characters rarely have any humanity, but he is making films about larger themes and are mostly satires on human behavior. One has to readjust one's mind to how one regularly watches a film. Maybe he leaves them a little blank so that the viewer can fill in the blanks. I'd still watch The Shining over Eyes Wide Shut any day.
I don't think Kubrick gave the idea a second thought and dismissed it immediately. It was just stupidity on the part of the studio heads to offer Kubrick a sequel. Sadly, we got Kubrick's idea for a "horror movie" or whatever one want to call The Shining He called it "a man and his family quietly going insane together". It just got goofy at the end with all those cliched horror images (the cobweb shrouded skeletons, etc.). I just think Jack Nicholson is a ham actor and it needed a better actor.
@madahad9 I don't think Kubrick could've made the Heretic any better. Not with his direction and the story. The Shinning was alright but the guy failed to capture the father - son relationship from the novel, and that's not because of Nicholson, it's because he chose to leave out/change segments of Jack's conflict with the spirits that were controlling him. This ultimately lead to the absence of his sacrifice so that Danny could get away. The movie lost the soul of the book.
The original script by Broadway playwrite William Goodhart was apparently fine. Boorman and Rospo Pallenberg then preceded to rip the hell out of it. Their results are on screen, A shame.
It's hard to believe but Warner Brothers asked Stanley Kubrick if he would directed this sequel. There are a couple good scenes in it such as the swarm of locousts, but the rest was pretty poor.
The story was brilliant and cerebral. Or what, they say it wasn't a good film because Linda didn't puke or masturbate halfway through the film? It wasn't good enough because it didn't focus on Merry's issues? What was it that made this film so scrutinized??
Whatever the reason maybe, I like this film better than the first.
The second image in this trailer is from the movie THE TEMPTER 1974, not this or the Exorcist. I have that movie on VHS from Embassy and it has that on it :D
I was just about to post that. Seriously, as demonstrated here, even some of the shittier horror films from the 70's had creepy-ass trailers. You should see the banned trailers from the original Exorcist.
I love this trailer. Shame the film wasn't too good though. This follows up second to probably my favorite trailer - 'John Carpenters The Thing' Oh, there was the 'Day of the Dead' trailer with the hands aswell that sticks in my head.
Here's a story I heard that seems to prove how much this sucked: in one theater, the ushers refused to wear their uniforms for fear that the audience would turn on them.
Does anyone agree with me...wasn't the the opening of the Exoricst II: The Heretic, didn't the credits open with the eye and the girl in the eye. I remember it like one t.v. once, in the early eighties. That's how I remember it, the eye and the african music.
If only the movie was as good as all the trailers that came out to try to promote the movie. Even after the movie came out Boorman tried to reslice the movie with a different opening and ending to no avail the movie really is a mess. But a good mess, because you just can't believe what you are seeing, you are taken to one place to the next with no coherence as to where they are taken you. "Fly the teeth of the wind, share my wings"....UMMM, okay but to where?!?!?!
This film munches so much cock its unreal! Just awful! This trailer doesnt do the terribleness of the film justice. This trailer makes it look not that bad. So in that sense, because of the films epic badness, this trailer is one of the best trailers Ive ever seen. Because it makes the film seem watchable. But because its promoting such arse water of the highest kind, it still sucks.
They should of Just left the original Exorcist alone with no part 2's and 3's. The Original Exorcist is a stand alone film that should be left alone. There is nothing like it and never will be
Made by a man with no interest in the original film. The film is mindless, and entertaining for all the wrong reasons. Thankfully, blatty made III and helped to heal the damage done with a real chiller.
Well Exorcist III is no masterpiece. Despite of what it's fans state, the film was not a critical success and failed at the box office and it's boring as h.ell. I fail to see how it healed the damage done by the Heretic. Not to mention some continuity errors and a ridiculous exorcisism scene.
I will admit though that this teaser would make Heretic look more interesting. The original trailer was so chaotic and mad and fully described better than words how the film would turn out.
Legion was directed by William Peter Blatty the author of the books so don't go and say Legion was bad. That was the true sequel. Heretic was a terrible terrible film however. Even Blatty, Blair, and Friedkin hated it. Legion is the true sequel. Heretic just took the original and turned it on it's head. It deserved the riot it got. That's why Blatty was reluctant to call his film Exorcist 3 instead of Legion cause he thought it would make it look bad at the box office.
I think this film had some great ideas & cinematography but everything was executed poorly. The film turned out funny instead of scary.. oh well but this teaser is very good. Like many have already stated, it makes the film look frightening & very promising.
Also...the demon that appears in 0:43 is frightfully fantastic but it does not appear in the film? Anybody know why? I must say the make-up on that particular demon is quite good.
It's a bit of an oddity, but there are hints and references to a few of the Exorcist rip-offs that came out after the original Exorcist all throughout Heretic. Aside from The Tempter, there's also subtle visual/musical/story-element references to Beyond The Door, The House of Exorcism and a couple of others I can't think of right now; but it's weird; it was almost like Boorman set out to make The Heretic some strange combination of the The Exorcist and all it's ripoffs into one bizarre film. :/
Aw, I thought this was the funny trailer with the retarded music.
