  • Does this work for all breeds? I read somewhere that it was bred into them in the 60's...so I was wondering if there is some breeds that it doesn't work for? Thanks for the great video!

  • Great Job!!! Thank you!!

  • Thanks for the video. I used this method on a 4 day old silkie. It worked great! Feathers where in two rows and it is now a 8 month old female.

  • hi, i have 4 3week old chicks, not sure of the breed yet, but how, using the vent, can i sex them?, i've heard people saying blow them, and something does something, does this work, and what am i looking for?

  • Thank you so much! this is definitively going to help me sex chicks in the future ^_^

  • doesnt it hurt them if you pull their feathers apart? guess they are just scared since they are so defenseless

  • OK I watched your video and it was a little hard to see but I think I got it, to me they all looked like they were female I have no idea if thats even possible. let me know if you have any imput, justmeeddie03@aol.com

  • Does that apply to every single breed or mixed breed?

  • The baby chicks were like "Owwwwwieee!" when you grabbed their wings lol

  • My chicks are a week old. Can I still sex them as their pin feathers are growing in?

  • Thanks

  • YAY BARRED ROCKS C:

  • this work for leghorns?

    .

  • They have to be breed for this not all breeds will work,CHECK YOUR FACTS PEOPLE.It has to a be a slow feathering breed bred to a fast feathering breed.

  • Feather sexing is easy, but it requires that the chickens be specially bred to manifest their sex in differences in the feathers as hatchlings. These are usually hybrids rather than true breeds.

  • This will only work for certain breeds. For heavens sake don't be culling suspected males because it wont work :$

  • So this works with all chicken breeds except bantams??

  • damn, now i want to play punt the chicken

  • so you can only do this at 3 days old?

  • @bunniboo1414 No you can do it as soon as they hatch after they dry off and you can look at the wing feathers.

  • @DavedandConfused72 ok thanks

  • Accuracy should be 100%. Commercially though where speed is an important factor will see this drop slightly but it is still reasonable to expect 98 to 99% accuracy.

  • This trick is used by professional hatcheries and is 100% accurate I suppose, I saw it at How do they do it, on Discovery channel.

  • how accurate is this like how many are male and female that you have sexed

  • I've used this technique on about 80 chicks so far. They are all various full sized chickens at day 1. Some were obvious females, but some weren't too.. like they might show the staggered feather pairs for the first and last few pairs of primary feathers, but have 6 rows all the same length in between. Anyone know???

So I also had a go at vent sexing.for the chicks I wasn't sure about. It turned out to be very traumatic for the poor chicks despite me being fast and gentle. Some fainted :-(

  • You say "primary wings", but do you meant primary feathers? It's the feathers that're different lengths in the females, right? Male feathers or the same lenght, right?

  • We're getting just hatched chicks today or tomorrow. I'm going to try this technique to try to get 5 laying hens......hope I don't get 5 friendly rooster babies. :) I wouldn't have the heart to kill them, and I don't think even begging can get a rooster to lay an egg. Wish me luck!

  • My Chicks Matted after 3 Weeks O_O

  • Why does this not work on bantams?

  • I actually tried this on my three chicks that hatched yesterday and I'm pretty sure I got 3 females:)

  • i like you brooder thank you for sharing

  • Does this work with ALL chicken breeds? I have a broody hen currently setting on nine eggs of various breeds. A lot of what I've been reading on line suggests that you can only rely on feather sexing with specific breeds... I'm getting a little concerned now about whether or not I'm going to be able to sex the chicks! This method looks really easy but am worried that it won't apply to my chicks.

  • pedochicken :(

  • That doesnt make sense. Why would sexing baby chickens be by the covert feathers and primary feathers. ALL all birds have primary and covert feathers..

  • @Bokkapooh there are different shapes for male and female

  • @Bokkapooh she didn't describe it very well- it's primary/secondary feathers, not wings.Female chicks, when you pull out the wing, will have a dagged look because the primaries are long and the secondaries are short, for a few days after hatching. On males, both primaries and secondaries are short and look all the same length. After a few days you can't tell the difference. I find feather sexing works best day2-day5 but it varies.

  • im hatching 6 chicken eggs ! 9 days left! cant wait!

when you candel them you can see them moving! its amazing! <3 xx

  • i breed ancona chickens and i will defently try this next time but there is another to sexing them as well

  • I was wondering if you knew if its the same for sexing ducks.

  • when you incubate the chicks does the temperature effect the sex of the chicks

  • Feather sexing can be done on birds who are bred slow feathering male with fast feathering female. If you do not have such a combination, or a sexlink of some sort, vent sexing is the only way to go.

  • no i couldn't tell

  • Does it work for quail as well? I have about 30 eggs in now. Button quail and contunix (mini quial) both are. Not the size of a bob white about half that. Anywya will this work for them? Cool video gave you a 5 on ratings Joseph T (fly2000jtb)

  • i have done this but i cant really tell the difference alot on the wing lenghts! How many males are you likely to have from a hatch of about 30????

can you also check my chick video and tell me what the breeds of my chicks are! ty

  • @nazzarran I'd just like to tell you that the sex of birds is like humans, 50/50 chance, so i dont believe you could tell out of thirty how many would be male

  • hi :) i have white cochin bantams. and i was wonderng how i could find out what sex the chicks will be? could you help?

  • so the two dark sections of wings..one ABOVE the other means its female?

and the males there is no division?

Does thing work for all chickens?

  • Excellent...TY

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to make and share this video! It is a huge help.

  • have the results been 100% accurate? :)
