I am still not convinced that the short radar nose is the impediment to have a retractable refuel extension. The Eurofighter typhoon has also a very short radar nose and it doesn't have a visible refuel extension. There is got to be another option available to make this possible. This design feature seems a significant drawback for this beautiful aircraft to be flawless.I can only expect that French engineers will have studied other options when this is so obvious and disfiguring.
Thank you for your reply. It helps to understand the reason why this refuel extension protrudes from this great aircraft.Trusting one day french engineers will solve this feature that will enhance the design of this outstanding airplane. This may be the crucial step in the appeal of the Rafale in the world market that will help to make it more successful.
@cmmonzon Sure it will be perfect without that, but like you say they are engineer, not designer, probably Dassault considers the choice of a fixed refueling probe more advantageous, especially for reliability. There may be a change, I heard that the next update (F4 standard) could incorporate a retractable refueling probe.
A retractable reful is heawyer and difficul to install on a compact aircraft: it comes in contact with the radar nose (for ex: the F18 nose is much longer...)
The Eurofighter isn't better than Rafale because the eurofighter is a multirole aircraft whereas the rafale is a omnirole aircraft( sorry for the vocabulary I'm french xD )
Beautiful plane! Got to see them when CVN-71 went and visit France and they did some joint flights, yep they got to land on American Carriers and take off :)
According to the Indian channel TIMESHOW.TV, the Indian Air Force would have selected the Dassault Rafale and the Eurogihter Typhoon for the final run of the MMRCA competition

Well, we know that jets can take off and land on the CDG. Now, more importantly, is the CDG a hobby-horse of the state or is it able to project power in support of foreign policy? Huge difference!
That's a good question! First of all the JAS gripen is not in the same category , it's smaller, lighter with only 1 GE-F-404 engine equivalent to 1 Rafale engine [M-88]. Gripen can carry less loads. From the beginning Rafale was designed to be a carrier based aircraft so its airframe is stronger to endure carrrier landings and launches. The canards of the Rafale are very different from the 2 others [near the wings] to guide the airflow on the wings. It was designed to be true multirole!
..Thanks to it's canard the Rafale can achieve lower appoach speeds and perform Air-ground, air-air and Air-sea missioons. But it cannot achieve supercruise yet [maybe in the future with new M-88 improved versions] The Eurofighter [EF] was designed to be only Air-air aircraft [with supercruise] so it lacks air-ground capabilities [next versions will improved for that]

@Brainless78 Yeah its not based on the Typhoon. Since France was originally in the Eurofighter project, its probably fair to say some of the experiences from that project transfered, but they quit for a reason - because they wanted a different kind of fighter.

would wish if rafale wins the swiss airforce F-5Ereplacement contest that we buy the rafale m version (well we have no carrier but like the F/A-18C these naval planes work well with our smale airbases). Rafale is my favorite (there are eurofighter and saab also in the run).
That's a good question. Yes he can see it clearly, the nose has been adapted for that. On the 1986 Rafale A it was much more difficult for Yves Kerhervé to make touch and goes but the prototypes made in 1993 the Rafale C (or Black Rafale) and The Rafale M 01 were improved for that purpose (among other modifications).
comparé à ses concurrents les Rafale à un prix dans la norme, il permettra de faire des économies d'échelle quand à la maintenance simplifié et les pièces communes puisqu'il remplacera 7 avions différents en France.

Why can't they give it a retractable refueling boom? If I were flying it, I'd rather get it out of the way until I need it. Aside from an obetruction for the pilot, it seems to be a blemish on such a beautiful aircraft.
Certainly aesthetics isn't a concern, but I think there is a pratical problem. A fighter needs the clearest view possible. Maybe when I buy one, I can have it customized. :P
THe refueling boom is not retractable for a matter of fiability. Rafale is a small aircraft (very compact), and moving pieces of a retractable refueling boom can make this system inoperant. Also, the Refueling boom of the Rafale (and the M2000) is designed to have the smallest impact on the Aircraft aerodynamics.
Those are certainly the reasons, I'm just considering a pilot's perspective. For instance, pilots have always praised the
F-16's lack of a canopy rail in front, which gives an unobstructed view. You're definitely right about its compactness. Rafale is a tiny little aircraft.
BTW the Royal Navy carriers are only that small because the harrier can take off and land vertically, there is no need for a large deck and they can still carry a large number of jets. Also the Royal Navy are getting new carriers soon for the f-35 and they will be the size of the american carriers, the largest ones i think NIMITS class?
why do airforces around the world speak english? I know most pilots have to speak fluent english, is english a sort of international language? They always speak english over the radios
When a war breaks out all of the allied forces need to speak the same language. English is that language and it also servers as the language of business as well.
I think ( not sure tho ) that the originality of this carrier is that it has 2 runways where 2 aircrafts can take of at the same time meant for faster reaction time. I m not sure tho..
The main difference between French-American carriers and the rest of the world is that they have steam catapults. And Brazil bought a former French carrier, it didn't develop and build it.
those jump flight decks are so old skool. steam and soon magnet catapults are the best way. btw the british carrier is sooo small like the size of a coast guard ship
