the Jhala of shahid is entirely different he has speed as well as he is maintaining the mood of raga as well, no where you will feel that the speed is spoiling the mood of the raga
Amazingly complex and varied changes of bol starting at 1:18! How does he do all of this? (I mean, can you order the instructional DVDs on the I'net?)
I realize that there is a lot of improvisation in Indian classical sitar music but to really hear it, I would need to hear the same raga played by two or three different sitarists. Anyone know of a good cd with such a comparison?
The dexterity is no doubt amazing but Khan Sahab's speed on meend is unbelievable! Also it's the fastest Jhala I've heard. Thanks for uploading the clip.
to say who is first and who is second is an amateur point of view. well,i agree with you, to play fast is not evrything, but its one more aspect and thre is no competition here. just the vibe that the musician bring with him. you can see Nikihil play different from Parvez. gentle and beautiful as it is.
@moshenuri.however saying 'who comes first-discussion' is amateur and placing ustad second to ravishankar is too much.ustad ,ravi saab, pt. nikhil, vilayat saab, budhadityaji, rais khan...are all frontliners in their own capaciy.and what to say about indrajit banerji and so many others who rob your mind and soul virtually .anyway i'm beholden for such a great cllection Thanks a lot. - drphcmurthy@gmail.com
Please stop doing stupid comparisons. Music is above competition and Gharana. Also a very very important point to note,
the Jhala that is being played in the Alap portion of this clip is the "Ulaat Jhala" (Ra Da Da Da) while the Jhala that Pt. Ravi Shankar played is the "Sulat Jhala" (Da Ra Ra Ra) {Da = main string and Ra = Chikari) both in the Alap as well as the Gat.
@scottybuddha raviji is absolutely average in front of shahidji as good as he is. that is the most unfair comment i have seen. listen to this man play a full piece. dont just listen to his jhala and complain that its too fast. his alap and meendkari in the slow is just above and beyond anything.

in all honesty, the fast taans are almost incomprehensible and has little or no musical value/content

@ramblinrover2 . If you are as good or better than Shahidji, then we might listen to your opinion.

This is great. Shahid Bhai comes from my home town, Pune. Other great Jhalas I heard:
Vilayat Khan: Shankara, Nizamudhhin Khan on tabla,
Nikhil Banejee: Komal Rishabh Aasawari, Kanai Dutt on Tabla, Nikhil Banerjee: Kirwani, Imrat Khan: Gawoti, Ravi Shankar: Jog, Allahrakha on Tabla.

no doubt shahids jhala is impressive and very fast.
but atma16, playing fast isnt what indian classical is all about!!
second, go listen to old ravi shankars jhala!!!
i would agree, shahid would come second after ravi.
