I went to the exhibtion at the british museam on saturday of the Teracotta army. It showed chinese history and how the first emporer Chin united all of China under one country. The area that it covered was immense and at no point did it ever cover anywhere near Tibet. When did China lay claim to Tibet? Was it 1958 when it invaded?

They could always free the 30 or so chinese journalists critical of the regime as well

At around 13th century Mongolian built a mogolian gov at tibet. After that, Manchuria army defeat Mongolian at lasha. Both mogolian and manchuria built their dynasty at china (called Yuan Dynasty, Qing Dynasty)

After 1911, The Republic of China new govenment took place of Qing Dynasty(Manchulia) and controlled all its land.

Since outer Mongolia now is an independent country. You can say, china occupy Tibet since 18th century. But tibet start to lose its independence at 13th century.
