Seriously. If you read about European and African history Europeans and Africans were more or less around the same level of technological advancement until the late 17th century when Europe's colonization started providing materials necessary for mass industrialization.
The GDP per capita of the continents were pretty even and steady until that century. Colonization and slavery uprooted the majority of African civilizations and many are having to start from scratch.

Read about African civilizations like the Mali Empire or the Swahili city-state or Abyssinia. Those were contemporary African civilizations to around the time the first European sailors arrived off the coasts of Africa in the 16th and 17th century.
If you recall around that same time most Europeans were peasant farmers and most cities were still holdovers from medieval times.
