Yes, you're right, there is possible no way for computers to be manipulated in such a way that the actual vote will be made different from what the user entered. And even if there were, there would be absolutely no motif for someone to alter said data in an event such as a presidential election. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just a paranoid conspiracy theorist; political parties with billions in interests could never perpetrate something like this to win an election.
