  • Absolutely amazing :)

  • wow awsome

  • Extremely nice, that must be ash wood, how many months did you leave it for seasoning and did you use any electric tools? (I'm having troubles with chestnut wood--- If you've got any tips).

With all my respect for your work,

    -Clem

  • @jim9871234 A COUPLE YARS OF HARD WORK,, NO VIDEO LIKE THIS TO SEE AND COULDNT LEARN BY BOOKS, SO I TAUGHT MYSELF,, TOOK ME 2 YEARS TO GET A SOME WHAT GOOD FACE,, ALWAYS LEARNIN' NEVER WILL BE AS GOOD AS I WANT !! THANKS !!

  • I keep coming back to this great video - I agree with other commentators that you should do a proper demonstration video though, there are very few folks actually demonstrating actually carving a hiking stick spirit.

  • @SimonMiriamfan I PROMISE I WILL,, BUT HARD WORK WILL MAKE YA A GOOD CARVER,,, I LEARNED ON MY OWN, ALOT OF TRIAL AND ERROR, OR FIREWOOD, IF YA WANT TO DO THIS, LEARN YOUR OWN STYLE, CHECK OTHER PEOPLES STYLE, YOU CANT DUPLICATE IT, BUT MAKE IT YOUR OWN,, AS YOU WILL... THANKS AND TAKE CARE !!!!!

  • That was amazing.

    8-)

  • @bloomingboris THANKS !!

  • thats the coolest beard out of all the ones ive seen! nice job!!!

  • @paynelikestoskate THANKS FOR THAT !!

  • Gnarly.

  • You make this look deceptively easy, but I know it's trickier than it looks. I'm going to practice this like crazy, and maybe one day I'll be bold enough to try it on my own hiking stick! I love your style, by the way. Your figures are tastefully done and look very natural, not chintzy or cartoonish like a lot of the woodspirits you see around. Skill! You has it!

  • @intooblv HEY !! THANKS !!!

  • awsum dude

  • @halldor7913 THANKS !~!

  • @halldor7913 THANKS !!

  • @panaloni MANY THANKS !!

  • that is unbelievable

  • Very beautiful!

    Wow!

What kind of varnish ,urethan or oil you use for the finish?

  • @toronaga2000 SORRY SO LATE,, BOILED LINSEED OIL, A COUPLE COATS OF SEMI GLOSS POLY,,, THANKS ..

  • @banjo7445 What kind of wood do you make your sticks from? I'm new to wood carving and I hear a lot that your wood needs to be totally dry or you risk it cracking. Are your sticks totally dry before you carve on them; this one looks green still? Excellent work ,btw!

  • brillant mate

  • amayzing

  • Neat.

  • That is awesome! Love that carving!

  • Thanks !

  • nice job man i love it. but what kind of wood did you use

    kind regards jonathan

  • I prefer maple, but you can use whatever you like. thanks....

  • Do you use knives ,files, chizzles and gouges or do u use mor electric/powertools?

    thanks

  • Actually, on his video "Woodspirit Carving In Stages" at 0:09 shows the layout of his tools.

  • anywhere i can buy one? if you could message me rather than replying to this comment thatd be great, because i have horrible memory and will most likely forget i posted this comment >.>

  • Do you make any vids that show you carving? The two i have seen are just pictures but i was searching for one that had some demonstration. I just started carving about 2 months ago and I am searching for methods and tips. :)

  • I have not done that as of yet, i should give it a try I suppose it would be more helpful, Thanks

  • Wow!! i see why you call them woodspirit!! you put so much emotion in them!

  • wow dood thats amazing stuff bro

ive got a hiking stick i wanna put that on...

    any tips?

do i need a whitling knife? or can i use a swiss?

  • Hey great job man. What a talent. What kind of wood works best? Any tips on what kind of wood or how to prepare the wood to carve? Drying? Thanks!

  • Well I just let the sticks dry for -4 months or so, that way they will not crack, thats pretty much all i do for preperation, but thanks glad ya like them.. o, almost forgot I prefer maple so the carvin shows up better instead of a dark wood.

  • This is great, you should be proud of yourself!!!

  • Thanks, I really appriciate your comment ! I just really enjoy making the sticks more than any other carviins for some reason, probably because thay can be used, than to sit on a shelf .. see ya thanxxx...

  • really nice work man

    great style too

  • Thanks alot !!

  • i have been carving walking sticks for many years and i have to say, you are very talented , beautifully done

  • Thanks !! this is a hobby and what ya just told me means alot !! thank you !!

  • Very nice, I hope to learn this skill someday.

  • Many thanx !!

  • i have him hanging on my wall in my room

  • What ? this stick, you may have ! i made this stick for a person who lives far from me, a, present for a guys brother.. are you the one who now owns it ???? i dont know,, I know the couple who bought it, and the girl who i met works at a ''garden center'' by the toledo airport !! well if so,, i hope you enjoy it !

  • no no no i have a carveing of the "woodsman" hes like a proctuctor of the woods and if you hurt it he'll hurt you type of thing

  • I have the book on making these in my room. It's a great book, but I haven't had a chance to make any because I lost my woodcarving stuff.

  • Nice stick... way too much time devoted to each shot though.

  • Well, thanks, i am glad ya like the stick.. but !! long pic shots for people who want to get started to learn how to maybe carve one. ya need to ,, look see and study ! if were a 3 second shot on the pics. then you would keep going back to see what ya missed,,, so i wanted time in each pic so all could see what i was doing,, get it ???

  • Thanks... It looks like you use palm chisels. Would like to see a vid of you working. What kind of wood are you using? PIne? Alder? A hardwood of some kind?

  • alot of maple, hickory, or what ever i can find, prefer maple, cause when i finish the piece i like the lighter color, show it shows up better against the dark bark,, i done some darker wood, like balack walnut but dont care for it..

  • great work looks good, will dig around more for your art.also noticed the beast light can in the back round 3.26 my favorite, whats your general local dude.keep it up!! from the northcoast of america ,over and out.

  • Ha,ha... yes the beast ! thanks man !

  • That's a cracker Mark!

I took up carving 3 months ago and been carving 3-1/4" tall 'wee guys'. I cut down about 20 various sticks to make some crooks out of. I hung them up to dry for 6 months................ that was 2-1/2 years ago now!!! LOL! I'm gonna try and make a Woodspirit Stick out of one of them! Thanks for the tuitorial!

    cheers Simon

  • Hey great !! good luck on the stick making !! its alot of fun, takes time but worth it,, take care !

  • Really cool, how long did that take you to carve?

  • Thanks, about 8 hours depending...

  • this was really good, im trying to re-lite my inspiration to carve thanx

  • thanks,, and good for you !!

  • do you let these saplings dry out before starting the process at all?

  • Yes,, I have to, dont want them to ''split''

  • Nice work dude. There is a guy that does similar work with elk horn you should look him up. He makes swords and head pieces

  • Thanks, i seen alot of antler and have done some also, thanks Buddy !

  • nice work

  • Thanks !!

  • what kind of knife do u use???

  • usually a ''helvie'' or my old cheap one.

  • absolutely brilliant, i love the statues in the back ground too, do you sell you work? regards mandeee

  • Yes i do sell alot of different carvings,, Thanks alot !!

  • are you using a foredom or a knife? i thought of foredom when i saw the wrench chain that comes with the foredom at 0:57

  • I use the foredom on the rounded tops and cutting in the grooves in the stick, and to grind off large knots when in the way.

  • A druid's walking stick! :d it's so amazing. I really loved it. Btw. it looks like a MadDwarfWorkshop's walking stick ;) greetings from Poland.

  • Greetings back to ya,,,, and thanks....hahaha

  • I have alot of poplar, white oak, ash and chestnut on my property. Which do you think would be best to use? Thanks!

  • Well, popular is nice and softer, and oak is nice, just depends on your taste i guess, smoother the bark the less to fall off while carving so keep that in mind, but let it dry out so it dosent carck on you.

  • what type of wood do you use?

  • usually a maple, sasafras,, just depends, but i dont like a dark wood... thanks

  • dude this is amazin!!!seen your roling pin

aswell that one blew me away. ive bin wanting to start learning to carve sine i finished my cabinet making course and youve givin me a lot of inspiration keep up the good work !!.

  • Thank you, any questions to help you just let me know ! most of all its practice, practice... good luck !!

  • Man this is so cool

  • Thanks buddy........

  • Yes afraid it will, i cut them ahead of time and leave them to dry out for at least 4-5 months, that way i know athey are all dry and the spliting is all done, i make alot of these and have a large stock, after drying and ready to carve i cut them to size.

  • Do you have a website with your stuff on it or something :) ?

    its really nice !

  • Thanks, go to my home page and you will see the link ,,

  • Nicely done!

  • Thanks Ron !

  • sweet! I made all my grandkids one for christmas! They dont know yet! I made them out of old wooden broom handles and added stuff like a whistle and a compass for starters. They can add the feathers and other trinkets as we go on our walks! It seams every time my hubby comes back from the woods he brings a dif stick home!

We all know why he cant get rid of them.

I need to try a carving on theirs! Mabe wait till they pic their first sticks and carve them.

    Helives!

  • Cool, yes they are fun to make, sure the grandkids will love them !... thanks

  • Had to change the orignal song, copywright issues.go figure !

  • No fan of the song but the carving work is highly impressive! Hope you are keeping up your spirits at the plant without me around to keep you laughing...

  • Great video Mark and love the song

    Silverfoxuk1

  • Thanks ol'buddy !!
