It took a few minutes for me to figure it out but Danny had a lot of the same expressions as Ray Bolger, as well as his dancing ability. His role of Hans Christian Anderson in the Fifties is a classic for all children. He teamed with Bing Crosby in White Christmas and in that skit where they dressed up as Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen, they topped anything that Crosby and Hope or Marin and Lewis. He was also great as the old Jewish man who didn't want to see the Nazis march through Skokie.
Genius. This was the bit--written by his wife, the brilliant Sylvia Fine--that put Kaye on the map. Love him (and her; she wrote pretty much all of his cinematic tongue-twisters) in just about everything!
¿Cuántos años tiene esta grabación en vídeo? El logotipo de la 2 de TVE debe ser de los años ochenta, ¿verdad? Tienes mucho mérito al haberlo subido. Gracias!!!
Sylvia Fine (Mrs. Danny Kaye) wrote this specialty number for him, officially known as "The Lobby Number"- he later recorded it for Decca records as well. The ending of it (on record) goes like this-
"...and here we are, back in Fresno, California. And this is where you came in. But do not fret, my friend....
(singing) This is a picture that ends in the middle, for those the benefit of those who came in, in the middle....

This is one of the first scenes I've ever seen of Danny Kaye and I just fell in love with his acting right of the spot. Putting the comedy of it aside, you must think how tremendous of an actor this guy must have been. This is the 21st century and it still impresses me MUCH more than any actor today could ever. Bravo, Mr. Kaye, now possibly my favorite actor.

first movie clip i ever memorized as a kid and it was my favorite movie growing up. Danny Kaye was brilliant. WHY ISN"T THIS ON DVD as well as A SONG IS BORN (another great DK film) "what's that clicking in your throat?" Rest in Peace Danny Kaye..
Danny Kaye was one of a kind...a combination of Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, and Fred Astaire... singer, dancer, comedian, with a crazy streak and a ton of talent. He spoke fluent gibberish.
I remember reading a bio on Kaye where he once said he was almost sorry the Lobby Number came so early in his career as he could never come up with anything as great.
The guy was a tongue twister extraordinaire, a great actor, physical performer and comedian; and all without my ever suspecting at the time he was anything other than himself; Danny Kaye. He made it seem effortless.
It should b clear that Danny KAye COULD have done it. I loved him in the 70's _I think he was underrated, and 'misused' he had a good voice, and 'ear'. A 'one man band' on his own :)
Wow! I'm an actress & I greatly admire DK... he makes me wanna dance when I see him. I wish I was only 6 years old, or perhaps 12, to want to emulate him & become a greater entertainer! :)
Yes and he sings "Your a mean one Mister Grinch", that one goes down in my list of ten favorite movie songs, and he sang "I am the Walrus" and "Dont you want somebody to love"
Sorry, but when it comes to the raw talent, versatile excellence, and watchability as Danny Kaye, Jim Carrey couldn't even shine Danny's shoes. Jim Carrey's a class clownish mugger, nothing more, imho. No depth, no talent other than making faces. Danny could mug with the best of them, but he was more than that. And the sheer range of each aspect of his talent was mind-boggling. A man with many personal demons and a dark side, his legacy was his talent, humanitarianism, and philanthropy.
The subtitles are the best part -- the poor translators obviously had no idea what to do with all those puns and internal rhymes. (I assume this is a Sylvia Fein Kaye song.)
Anyone know where I can find footage of Danny's classic "Draft Board" scatting routine -- the uncensored version, including the "turn your head and cough" bit?
so correct... I remember watching this film and thinking "I have discovered a great hidden gem of my grandparent's era". This was about 15 years ago. I rushed to get my grandfather and ask him if this was what every movie was like in the 40's and 50's.
Grandpa said "Oh no. That's Danny Kaye, one of the best. Didn't make them this good without him"
I was so dissappointed I hadn't discovered the guy, but still so glad he made his mark. If Jim Carrey could sing and dance...
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. No one was better than Danny Kaye! I memorized this entire scene word for word 15 years ago...I just quoted the whole thing as I watched it, (my cat stared at me as if I was insane LOL!) Danny Kaye rules!

My parents loved Danny Kaye; they were teens when this film was released.
I personally consider him to be barely a notch above Jerry Lewis which is NOT a compliment.
My parents simply couldn't understand my preference for Eddie Cantor (an earlier Goldwyn star) over Kaye.
