Just wish I had the Japanese version. The first time I played I cast it away because nothing made sense. Later I decided to look beyond that and actually play it. All the story was gone, the core design was good. Later found out about the Japanese version and it pains me that Europe and the US had to be so xenophobic and basically throw half the game in the trash because it is anime.

Sure there's no storyline but it's still a fun game. And also, the opening doesn't make sense but i find the song really catchy. used to leave my playstation on and listen to it all day.
W-W-What was that? Not a single face in the opening (plus awful remix?), no single videoconference or radio chat, how it's the game playable? How does it explain the changes in faction if the story and characters are ripped? Or.. there is no NEU/GRDF/UPEO/Ouro. switching at all?
This looks so-bored, just start, kill tgt, go to next stage, kill tgt, and so. Sucks. I feel sorry for usodians...

What really worked in the other ACs, especially 2 and 4, were things like other pilots speaking with you and the hard rock music. I felt like I was in "Top Gun". Here, you feel alone and the electronica music feels like you're playing Wipeout rather than AC.
Shame, I heard the Japanese version of this game is actually amazing, contains full pilot conversations like Ace Combat 4,5 and onwards, and had a gripping storyline. But the English version, they just scrapped it all... no idea why!
It's not as good as AC2. Planes actually fly in space, and the HUD takes up too much of the screen. People say the Japanese version is better because it has more missions and storyline, but it doesn't forgive a clunky HUD or absurdity with the sci-fi.
The Japanese version is MILES better than AC2 thanks to the storyline and atmosphere.
The US/EU versions... only slightly worse, truly. It's still fun, but unlike the Jap version (or even AC2) it doesn't feel like you really are contributing anything to the conflict in the game.
i remember sitting on the carpet 2feet away from the tv watching replays over and over and over again saying, "my god, this is the best graphics i have ever seen"
For a PS1 game... The graphics are quite nice.
