The interesting thing about Jean Stapleton and Carroll O'Connor is they were the polar opposites of Edith and Archie - both were well spoken and very polished. I know Mr. O'Connor was a liberal (sorry, Archie fans), and I believe Ms. Stapleton is the same. What glorious actors!
From some of the interviews I have read w/ Jean Stapleton back in the 70's, when she was extremely popular, she is a very private person. She also had the ability to play a character and when she was done, just walk away and move on to the next w/ no emotional ties. I think that was something the public was never able to do w/ the character of Edith. She wanted people to know there was a difference between the character she played and her real self.
Many people I know swear that the "Edith Bunker voice" is her real voice. I always knew it wasn't. It's nice to be proven right. She can't be as much of a dingbat as Archie always claimed her to be, lol
She was born January 19, 1923. It's so over rated when people try to conceal their age. Doesn't she realize the internet has all these facts? Anyway she's great but I didn't like the comment she made to quit the interview because she was asked her age.
Jean Stapleton was a brilliant actress. I remember seeing her in some movies where I didn't even recognise her for much of the movie! It had nothing to do with makeup, but her ability to morph into her character. I think she was one of the most underrated actresses ever.
Jean Stapleton was a "terrific" actress not only with "All in the Family", but also with other acting jobs she did as well. And I have seen them, but maybe not all of them. Was Jean related to Maureen Stapleton? She just passed away not too long ago. Maureen that is.
she went through all those episodes in all the family and archie bunkers place doing ediths voice, wow she couldve straind her vocals lol.... wow i like edith better!!!!!!!!!!!!! then her and i know its the same person but i like edith more
Interesting and fascinating though these interviews are, I have noticed that the female subjects still held on to the vanity of omitting their ages from the interviewers (hilariously because these dates are easily found and confirmed in other places). I find it a little sad really, these are documents for historical posterity and the fact that they protest about stating their DOB will only increase the sense of ridiculousness in the viewer the further time goes by.
Jean Stapleton (born Jeanne Murray, January 19, 1923 in New York City, New York) is an American character actress of stage, television and film. Stapleton is best known for her portrayal of Edith Baines Bunker, the long-suffering, yet devoted wife of Archie Bunker
Edith was great, one of the most compassionant characters there is. She was so funny and heartwarming the way she would not quite get what was going on and she would say something off the wall but she was SO sincere about it.
Archie called her dingbat a lot but I think in her own way Edith was very wise and smart.
She was born in 1923, how sad that she doesn't celebrate birthdays. Jean seems very bitter and uptight. How sad that she didn't learn anything from her character of Edith who was lovable and endearing. It seems that she was forced into this interview. I love the Edith character, although very "Dingbat" she was very caring, open, and humanwise. Which in my book is more important than any other qualities that make a person. She doesn't have the joy of life which Edith shared w/the audience.
you forget about Beverly the drag queen that she was very close too...and further more...does a gay man or woman have to be in every thing you see just to feel validated
This is not out of context, but is part of the world of Edith. I saw that episode when it originally aired. I was in High School then. You could NOT honor your sexuality if you were gay. The word GAY was not even used for homosexual. When Beverly got murdered my heart broke. I think it affected Joxer36 the same way and he remembered what I did; grief and sadness.
As Dabbs Greer once said: "Every character actor, in their own little sphere, is the lead."
And then, she became the lead, as Edith!
One question I have about All in the Family is whether there was a writer's "Bible" to keep all of Edith's many and varied relatives straight? Ha ha... :)

Listing her to talk with her real voice reveals how good of an actress she was.
Her ability to shift into Edith is just amazing

Jean is 86 years old??!! Then how old is Rob Riener? (Archie Bonker).
musicalwayshere4 2 years ago
Rob Reiner played Michael (Glorias husband) and he is 62 now
Caroll O'Conner played Archie Bunker and he was 76 when he passed away in 2001
Nitro1970 2 years ago
1. Carrol O'Connor was Archie, not Rob Reiner.
2. It's BUNKER, not Bonker.

she must be a pretty good actress to embody the character of Edith so well... cause in real life she's really nothing like Edith

I know of the "Beverly LaSalle" character that appeared on three episodes of "All In The Family," but why did you bring up this issue out of context?
