Julia our college Waldorf College which is in a small town in Iowa did Godspell last year and we used a female Jesus. It was really controversial here as many church goers were up in arms because we chose our person based on how they acted in real life and their qualities that made them Christ like. Honestly it makes me feel good to know that we are not the only ones that did this,
6:05, my friend blew the whistle LOUD!!!! and i was on the front row!!! The very front! And he was doing the same thing but he was singing or talking speaking the classic circus theme
@MorganBatChava Except, excuse me, that it loses a bit of its power when a teacher of Love and Gentleness is a female rather than a male, the antithesis of the male role in our society, thereby making the message more sincere and deep. Other than that, it doesn't matter WHO preaches Goodness.
To those of us who believe in The Atonement, the effects of the red lighting reflected off the sheet enveloping Her was stunning, as well as John/Judas himself being the Cross.
omg ive seen godspell done at my church from when i was a baby and me and one of the other adluts have always joked around that since im the only one in my grade that i will be the first female jesus in our play and now we have only 4 guys and they are all 1th and 8th graders so this clip has really given me the confadense that i really might be ablr to be the female jesus. thank you so much
may i just say you have a beautiful voice and you did it very well im currently in rehearsal for this show and im jesus idk how im gonna hit those notes though because im a baritone lol yah fun fun
Wow. The concept of a female playing Jesus is awesome. And, in my opinion, it's not the fact it's a girl that makes it so awesome- it's the fact that she can portray the innocence of Jesus.
very touching. i'm currently doing this as well and one of the parts i wanted was Jesus, i'm Lamar instead though. oh well, yey to us females who rock the male roles!
I realize that this could be taken as a rude comment, which I didn't mean. I've been teaching this show and they were doing the same thing...everything else is great though! :)
I love the female Jesus concept and (what I interpreted to be) the message of purity/love being conveyed. You were great, acting and voice-wise! :)
I am in Godspell right now as a female Judas and LOVING IT! Our production is school-themed (with Jesus as the teacher and everyone else as the students with different stereotypes.)
P.S. I was searching on Google for info/photos of Godspell for inspiration and I think I may have stumbled upon the poster for your production. It's really powerful.
I think what made this Jesus unique wasn't so much the fact that it was a girl, but how the actress emoted someone really innocent. When Judas gets ready to betray Jesus, it brings a new heaviness to the scene, as the audience comes to sympathize with Judas. The idea of sending something as innocent as a child to the slaughter resonates with tragedy and guilt.
on the PACE Theater's YouTube page, they state that they had Jesus portrayed by a girl to show Jesus with a child-like quality that they believed he had. I think it worked very well myself. Julia Suriano is definitely going to be a big star someday! She's such a great performer.
On The Willows always makes me cry! im in godspell now and the way we're doing it is all the young children from the chorus come out in white dresses with white balloons and sing its so sad!
I understand what you're trying to say, but back in Biblical times and in the older times men were not looked down on for sleeping around, but a woman was an "adulteress". It's a double standard, I know, but that the way it was then so a "Male Mary Magdalene" would have made no sense.
This isn't supposed to be rude, but is Jesus a girl because there was a lack of males interested, or because they thought a female would be better? My school is doing Godspell, and our Jesus is a guy, and I was just wondering why...
On the PACE Theatre's YouTube page, they state that they cast a girl as Jesus vecause they wanted to depict Jesus with the innopcence and purity that he embodied. A great job if you ask me! rock on, Julia!
you isn't it? It threw me at first that Jesus was a girl, but she did a great job and the whole scene was great! Chill out with the judgment there Jimmy Swaggert!!!

i'm not being judgemental. she did a good job and she had a nice voice. i just don't see any reason as to why Jesus was played by a girl because Jesus was a boy. . . God's SON. We are all God's children, and he loves us no matter what our gender is. But when in comes down to it, Jesus wasn't a girl and that's that.

Very cool! My high school had a female Judas, and she did a beautiful job. The great thing about this musical is that it doesn't really matter.

Yes, I played Jesus! :)
It's not shown in this video, but I guess when I came back to take a bow it could have been interpreted as the resurrection.
Thanks for watching! :)

Great Idea to have judas hold her as the cross. I've got a few questions: Did you do the ressurection? Did you play Jesus?
Thanks for posing.
