Back then, their wasn't too much money to be made in rock music, so it was untainted by corporate censoring which left the artist themself to create the song and record what THEY felt was good, not some bigwig. You can see it started with many of the artists of the late 70s-90s. They have a "great" 1st album, an "okay" 2nd, and a bomb of a 3rd. They change as people as they gain fame, and their music starts to reflect it
