Are you reminded of "Where the Wild Things Are" when you see "Let the Right One In"?
They remind me of eachother a lot: the stories are different, but the characters are similar - the POV, the child's eye perspective, the solitude, the style, the atmosphere, the emotion that is cold and muted until the end.
I think they should have added the deleted scenes to the film. They show their relationship to truly be of love, And not just about blood as it was with Elias, And Hakan.
If Eli were to bite Oskar he would then turn into a vampire like the woman did in the movie would he not? Then would he not age like Eli? In my opinion that would be a fairly good alternate ending... Oskar willing to face the burden of doing what Eli has to live with so they can live together forever.
@2submit I never said Eli was a girl. I don't know about the book but in the movie Eli says "I am not a girl" which could just mean Eli is saying I not a girl, but a vampire, it doesn't automatically mean Eli is a boy. Plus, in interviews Lina does refer to Eli as a girl and she has read the book. In all honesty I felt that part of the story was vague because the directer wanted the viewers to believe whatever they wanted to.
It is called "Låt de gamla drömmarna dö" (in english: Let the old dreams die, as in the Morrisey?? song: "Let the right one in, let the old dreams die"). Although I am pretty sure that the book exists only in swedish so far. The novel doesn't focus on Oskar and Eli but we are given some parts of their story through the eyes from two other people. I really lilked the novel. However, as a big fan of Let the right one in, I want to know even more about Oskar and Eli!!
@henricbarkman there is also an english translation available since last year i think. i bought it about a week ago and almost finish the book. the book explains lots more things of eli's history
The author to Let the right one in, John Ajvide Lindqvist, has now written a novel about what happens after Oskar and Eli gets on the train. I won't spoil it for you by but apparently his own image o how the story continues was not in line with what many of the commenters has suggested, that Oskar will become a new "Håkan", and therefore he wrote the novel.
Definitely a happy end to me as well. I imagine Eli will turn Oskar into a vampire within a year or so and they will live forever together as vampires.
Just as Alfredson said, it's all "up to you" to decide and judge the story, the characters, the outcome. The remake, on the other hand does most of it for you. :(
@kryptiea Oh, yeah she's beautiful. I think she looks iranian(wow btw, looked her up just now, she's from swedish and iranian descent). She has got dark brown eyes in real life. :)
@kryptiea In the original movie everything feels more authentic... Its a 'rare' kind of movie, like an unpolished diamond you find and dont realize its a diamond until you look at it very closely, the american version is more like a polished diamond everyone can digest.
I wish there could be a LTROI 2, but that wouldnt feel the same, the nice thing about this movie was how they build their relationship, now the way they continue it wouldnt be of so much interest...
If they made a sequel, it has to take place in 2012!

The boy that was being dragged was the one that didnt do anything. He was the one telling Jimmy to stop.

@MsKagome19 Exactly. Like the director said, the ending keeps you guessing and lets you decide what happens next. It can be a happy or sad ending.

One thing I hate about the new movie is the girl. Linda had the old Europe look to her like she could have been a child from another century
