  • i think its too seperated. sounds like a march not a flowing piece. The singers are good but the interpretation is not

  • most young singers are not able to sing "straight tone" without hurting their voices. besides this way they are singing with their real voices and won't have as many bad choir habits to break in their future voice lessons.

  • This is a great performance, however, the last performance I saw, the choir brought the house lights down at the end and it was incredible...that was the NKU chamber choir...it was incredible and made the performance

  • ya the vibrato is ruining this piece for me.

  • indeed this is a piece that does not need very much vibrato at all.

  • Too much vibrato.. it adds a "warmth" to the sound, but with all the close harmonies it kind of muddies it up a bit

  • I just think this is really good.

I'm not going to pick it apart.

    There's no point.

I'm guessing over half of them don't even know this is posted anyway.

  • Wow I'm no trying to be rude but the way they are singing makes me cringe. The vibrato is so thick it is actually warping their tone. I agree way less vibrato!

  • i thought the vibrato was beautiful. i know that it wasn't an easy task to keep everyone in the choir so in sync and in agreement with eachother. i dont believe it was too much at all. Beautiful sound.

  • The vibrato might be nice on other pieces, but most of Whitacre's stuff requires the choir to be non vibrato...the dissonances he writes just don't pop like they should with vibrato like this.

  • ayyyyyyyyy, no vibrato, but it sounds good.

  • i agree. too much vibrato

  • to be honest vibrato shouldnt be on this song

  • The tone has too much vibrato. Although you guys are talented singers, it would sound a lot better with straight tone.

  • but the vibrato adds some color to the song... though yes, it could be more effective if vibrato was not very intense

  • the vibrato isnt appropriate for this it should be straight tone

  • wtf are you talking about? their singing just fine. this choir is amazing

  • Great diction

    Great dynamics

Straight tone more of it. There is too much vibrato.

  • Definitely waaay too much vibrato where it isn't indicated in the score. Listen a bit more to one another and really go for a bit more finesse in the high intense moments...less muscle.

  • Hmmm needs a darker sound, you guys are awfully bright, also could use more tenor in the beginning. Kinda sounds like you guys aren't singing with each other as much as singing against each other. Just being picky is all.

  • This was a great rendetion of this piece. The dymanics were particularly moving. It all sounded very compelling and it sent shivers down my spine! Great job!

  • Eric Whitacre has writtne one great song... and several other songs that sound just like it...

  • He does use a lot of the same stuff, but he has more than just one good one theres probably like 4 or 5 good ones...

  • @lightman369 "like 4 or 5 good ones" hahaha I must say that made me laugh... because it seems you're defending Eric but if you are, saying he has 4-5 good songs isn't necessarily the greatest way...

He uses similar stuff but always makes it different... that's what I love about it, even I can tell a lot of what he's doing but it's still very advanced compositionally and ALWAYS sounds great.

The vibrato is fine except for when the sopranos have loud held notes, it goes out of tune.

  • Just did a report on Whitacre for my choir class and he is frikken awsome... this is a great performance

  • At least the vibrato moves together withing itself.

It's just like the Harlem Singers. They're amazing, but too much vibrato for them to sing as a choir.

  • sounds bad with vibrato... has to be absolutely straight... maybe a tiny bit in the "dark and deep" sedction... other wise good voices.

  • i love this song its so relaxing it makes me think..

  • A majority of Whitacre's pieces are all about polyphonics.

The chords he uses are all so clustered and tight that any bit of a vibrato ruins the intended sounds. Any of you that sing it in the future remember this and pay homage to the great chords created by this amazing composer.

  • i agree, at some of the points like "soon" and "head" where the chords were held, the blend seemed off just a quarter step in all sections, i agree that there was a bit too much vibrato, and that very well may be why it's sounded off, but other than that, it's sounded extraordinary.

  • i never noticed how much vibrato the sopranos had last year. from within the choir, it's a totally different sound.

  • agreed. too much vibrato.

  • excellent song choice. we're doing this song in my chorus. i hope we can sound like your chorus.

the only thing is, there were a few sopranos who sounded like they weren't blending very well. and the men may have had a little bit too much vibrato. it made the already clashing chords sound clashier. but a very wonderful tenor section. i love their part in this song, it's so melodic. great work.

  • A nice effort with nice intonation and such. But why is there SOOOOO much vibrato? There should be limited vibrato...even barely any vibrato in this song. The close intervals are creating dissonance that can only be really be present in a good way if straight tone is used. Although it is not completely the performers' faults...the director is ultimately to blame. But ay ay ay, that seemed like a lot of vibrato for ANY song let alone a song with extreme dissonance.

  • I agree; no vibrato.

  • fan- fucking- tastic. This song is honestly the only thing keeping me from quitting my choir class.

  • wonderful tonal quality, great diction and intonation! the ONLY critique that i have of how this song was sung that in my mind kept it from being great was that there was WAAAY too much vibrato, which i think hurt the blending and "settling" of the chords. eric whitacre has a lot of tightly packed cluster chords that i feel require a much more straight tone in order to really hear those chords and dissonance. but great job overall, esp. w/ the dynamics!
