Reality:
These earnest pseudo-sophisticated musicians have at least worked hard to memorize their painstakingly worked-out pseudo-classical parts, but they self-evidently don't have the skills to do any serious improvising.
They don't actually play particularly well. All their parts are very easy (in spite of how much naive and unperceptive people may passionately protest that this is not the case.)
Nobody who literally has a clue could take this kind of over-hyped music seriously. Why lie?
i think the reality is you have no idea what this particular song means to Latvian people. do some background research, maybe then you'll understand why they love this performance so much.

the song is called "Dorogoi Dlinnoyu" it was originally a russian folk song. it was then later revised in 1968 by mary hopkin into the song "those were the days". melo m transcribed their version from the later of the two. its on their album.
Actually it is a cover version of Līvi song Dzimtā valoda, wich is about mother tongue as mentioned, an was writen as a dissident song in the dying years of the USSR
