1) pretty much every nation pre 20th century was building an empire, pretty much EVERYONE was doing it. If India was not colonialised by the British then the French would have.

@andrewdeane Even if we got our referendum I doubt we will/ could reintroduce the commonwealth and try and (renforce it into a Commonwealth) union. I'm around 21ish and I tired throwing a Commonwealth-day party last year. No-one turned up. The most common excuse was “I don't want to support an evil Empire"! If today's youth don't believe in it what chance do we have?

We also handed back all colonies diplomatically, and some of them, by their own choice, still recognized the crown monarch and so we made the commonwealth. And the commonwealth is only a name, no one country has control of the other. Those that wish for an empire shows a patriotism that is one sided and not inclusive of the people's views.

Sure the British Empire did some bad things like invading other countries and the like but also the good things that came out of it. 1) pretty much every nation pre 20th century was building an empire, pretty much EVERYONE was doing it. If India was not colonialised by the British then the French would have.
2) Britain actually went about thier empire in a much more civilised manner compared with most other empires at the time.
3) colonialism can still be seen as a good thing...
