I'm not entirely sure, but from what I've read they suspect a murder/suicide. This one girl that he was seeing was also killed/committed suicide. McNair had multiple gunshot wounds while the girl (her last name started with a K) had a single gunshot in her head.

im a Rams fan so you know how im connected to Steve McNair. the 2000 Superbowl Rams vs Titans and even tho we won and the Titans lost McNair played a great game. he was a great QB too, the 2003 NFL MVP. i still cant believe it but it sucks... R.I.P. Steve McNair

It is true and it is so very, very sad. He was a very good guy who did a lot for the community, did a lot of good for kids.
