If you don't mind me asking how many locs does your daughter have? I'm planning on starting my 7 yo daughters locs and just trying to see what a "good" amount for her. Thanks bunches.
@ItsJustMeC She has seventy two locks. If I could do it again I would give her at least 90. I feel there's more styling options with more although she loves it she could care less.
@svfmiss1 At this time I believe I used prostyle black gel...but I wouldn't recommend using that now that I have more knowlege. I would use a lighter gel that washes out easier like queen helene styling gel. I only used the black gel that one time to start them. I used a comb to create the comb coils. Unfortunately I can't do a tutorial because my youngest daughter is locked and my oldest currently has braids but in the future when I take my oldest daughter's hair out I will show.
sooooo how did you get your daughter to sit under the dryer for 1 hr? Im 31 and my hairdresser has to give me a pep talk everytime I go under.LOL. Her locs are beautiful
@ladyc30001 It's funny because she LOVES the dryer...she says it the best part of getting her hair done lol. She only had to sit under the dryer for an hour the first time. Now she sits under for about 20 minutes. And she still loves it. She was already used to sitting for long periods of time from getting her hair braided all the time. It's was good practice ;-)
I love your daughters hair. My little girls has very thick coarse hair, I wanna dread it but i'm not sure if i should. I don't want her to not like them when she grows up. Any advice?
@simplyhot101 It's a personal choice. Every child is different. My daughter wanted locks so I did it. I have another daughter who doesn't have locks. If she wants them let her wear them. In the future you can always take them out. I really don't think it's as big of a deal as many think. It's a natural style and it can be taken out in the future.
Great job!!! And a GORGEOUS model! :) Can you add some update pics? And how frequently do you have to twist them now? Thanks for sharing!!! BEAUTIFUL baby girl.
I'm comb coiling my daughters hair to start her locs as well, but I couldn't get all the way down to the ends the way you did, so the ends are bushy. How did you do it?
@MyRootsRoc You are so right. My daughter loves her locks and I don't think she will take them out. And if she did...I believe she will remain natural. And that's all I care about.
@MyRootsRoc I did the comb coils when her hair was wet so it was easy to get it thru to the end and using the gel also helped. Sorry this is six months late I thought I responded.
thats so pretty, and your daughter is adorable.. Good job on the locks you made it sound so easy. I wanted to get my sons hair locked but I ended up just getting him a hair cut :)
how old was she when u started her locs my baby is 5 and she has said she wants to loc up . but some people are saying i should wait but i think if i do it now by the time she is old enough to feel the"pressures' her hair will be so beautiful she wont care ,
@ladiwriter - you're thinking JUST like me! For a couple of yrs people talked me out of locing up my daughter's hair till I finally decided to go on with the endless cornrowing till she was old enough to give me a yes or no answer on whether she wanted to loc. I've had locs now for a total of 4 yrs and she's turning 6 this month and finally got tired of the painful combing and is locing up! I say go for it!!! I also think they'll love them so much when older they won't care what others say.
Your daughters locs are beautiful. I am thinking of starting my daughter's locs she's 3. I tried one coil on my daughters hair but cannot get it close to the scalp as you did any suggestions.
It takes practice. But it really doesn't matter if you can't get it as close to the scalp. When you retwist the next time you'll get it closer to the scalp.
Thanks I'll keep trying love your videos I've been loc for 4 1/2yrs and still loving my locs. I got mine started professionally and at about 6mths I started maintaining them myself. I think I can start my daughters but just a little worried about the parts.
Just part it the same way you would if you were box braiding her hair. It'll come out fine. Just do it, if it doesn't look right just take it out before it locks and try again
Well it depends on your hair texture. On average you could wash your hair anywhere from once a week to once a month. I really wouldn't recommend you washing you hair less than once a month just wash your hair gently concetrating on the scalp. And retwist immediately after washing if you want your hair to stay.
Her hair was soaking wet with a very thick, heavy gel that takes a long time to dry. And her hair is coarse not fine so you have to add additional time for that as well. I don't think that's true for a white person hair either. It's the same as doing a roller set on an elderly white woman with coarse hair. She would have to sit under the dryer to ensure the curls hold and last until the next appointment.
nice.............i have always loved locks but i am scared your hair will never go back to normal if you want it to.........so she will be in locks till she cuts it off right?
They can be taken out or can cut them out. It's just like having a perm if/when you decide to go natural again you would have to grow the perm out and cut the relaxed part. If she decides to cut it she'll be beautiful either way short hair looks just as good as long hair.
Hi, I'm sure you've found this out by now, but you can comb them out. It just takes a LOT of time. I think the YouTuber's name is Shawnta. She combed out her locks and only cut just a little of her hair. You may want to ask her. She had worn locs for, I believe she said 7 or 8 years.
You're in the NY area right? I'm kind of interested in locs and which method is best, twist or the coil thingy? lol. But I'm transitioning with my hair right now from permed to au naturale =)
Yup on the island. It is really your descision on which method is best for y ou. I prefer the comb coil over two strand twists but it all a matter of preference and hair texture
how long did it take for her hair to lock up. i started on this guys hair and i retwist it every week to get it started and im just curious to no how much more longer will it take to lock up?
I would say her hair started to lock between her 5th and 6th month. She's 10 months in now and it pretty much locked. I don't think her hair will be 100% locked until after a year or so.
um im a boy and i just got my hair twisted 3days ago but i want to no if i can sleep with out a durag or do i have to because is gana mess up. and wen can i wash my hair.. my twist are small not big look like little small gummy worms
I think I will start mine with the protein Gel, just because of the climate where I live, it is always warm so I sweat alot and will probably need all the hold I can get at the begining. Now I will just need some help coming up with a grid pattern because I do have fine textured hair also and I am concerned about making them too big or too small, any tips on grid patterns? Thank you for your prompt response the first time.
I like the grid or brick parting. Bricks are what most people get. If you hair is thin I would use that method because It looks fuller. I believe the size of the part determines the size of the lock. I think 1/4th of an inch is a nice size. My daugther's are a bit bigger than that. But it's all about preference. I wouldn't go too thin though over the years they'll get thin and break off.
Hello Queen, How does one find a loctician in my area. I am from Cincinnati, OH. I wore braids for several years and had to cut my braids because of damage to my scalp. I always loved having my hair long, although it is super thick. (I have broken combs and all). So I have done the research and know that dreads are for me. What do i look for in a good loctician? any recommendation as far as parting and techniques?? what are the best products for locs there are so many out there
She loved it then and she loves it now. She always wore braids and kinky twist all the time. So I told her it'll be like having permanent twists that don't come out and you won't have to get your hair combed ever again. She loved the idea.
Yeah, maintanance is the only unfortunate factor about small locs. I'll see what is available for me and what I'm willing to go with. I've been growing my hair for two months now from a short cut. Hopefully I can twist them in 3 more months.
The most unique locs I ever saw were these very thin micro mini locs. I'm going to grow some locs and I'm thinking about getting them like that but it must take all day to get them retouched. I'll hae to think about that.
It's not that bad to get a touch up. It's only takes 45min to retwist my daughters. And when I get mine done about an hour and a half. The intial process is the most time consuming. But the smaller they are the more maintanace and time it takes to get them done. But I think it worth it.
That's not bad at all, but the locs that this woman had were tiny, she must have had like a few hundred on her head. They look like they stay neat for a while though. But I had no idea you could retouch them that fast. Thanks for the knowledge!
Well, my daughter has only 73 locs and I have 114 on my head. So if she has several hundred on her head...that'll take much longer than 1 1/2 hours. I wanted smaller locs myself...but my hair is thin, and my loctician said in the future they may have the possibility of thinning out and falling off. So I took his advice and got them larger.
It's pretty simple. You just section the hair and starting at the top of the hair you enter the teeth of a small tooth tail comb into the hair and twist the comb down the hair until it makes a coil. It's simple put takes a lot of time and patience. It worth it though. My daughter loves it!
Im sorry but i dont mean to be a pest but i dont have any idea on how to start it off without mess it up... Thanks alot.. The way you did the locks how long would it stay in b4 you have to re-do it again? is it ok too use bobby pin to hold the locks down?
I used the comb coil method and I made box parts using a grid pattern instead of bricks. I want to make a tutorial on comb coils, but I have to find someone to use as a model. Once I find someone I'll make a post.
Thank you. I've had two customers so far...my friends of course. And they loved it. I might start doing it from home. But only locs. I can't do anything else lol.
I used a grid pattern instead. This way She has more styling options and she'll have straight parts. I started my hair the same way. If you look at the post where I flat twisted her locks into a bun it has a neater more organized appearance. Well to me it does. It's all preference. Thanks for posting :)
She loves her hair! They are aleady locking. I curl them with rollers and put them in little pony tails. She looks adorable. I taught my girls from birth that they are beautiful naturally. My children love their kinky hair. They even tell their friends they shouldn't perm their hair.
Thank you. I used the protein gel just to start them because it has a great hold. She didn't have a problem with flaking or stiffness. I do think it is too heavy to use on a regular basis, it doesn't wash out easily. When I retwist her hair, I use setting lotion and a little olive oil to add shine. I don't believe product helps the locking process.
Thank you so much...she's the one who gave me the strenght to loc mine. I asked her if she wanted them done she said yes no hesitation. I been teaching my children from birth that they are naturally beautiful and they don't need extentions or straightened hair to be beautiful. I'm happy they don't have to go thru "self hate" like I did. Thanks for your comment
Thank you. I hope so...I retwist her hair every couple of days...you how kids are running playing getting sand in their hair. I already washed it twice. It still looks great though, but it's a lot of work and patience.
yea ive been locing up for 5 months going on 6 months and i know all about patience lol encourage her so she can hang in there because locs are a lot of upkeep during the beginning stages
wow...she is toooo cute...cant wait to see her locs when they began to mature...keep us posted...oh i wish you would have made a tutorial on how to coil...but its ok...lol. great vid!!!!
Thank you. I know...I was taking these pics myself so it would have been difficult to take pictures while coiling. I'm going to buy a web cam soon. Maybe I can make a tutorial then. This was actually my first time locing someone's hair from scratch it wasn't difficult just time consuming. Thanks for the feedback :)

I used the comb coil method and I made box parts using a grid pattern instead of bricks. I want to make a tutorial on comb coils, but I have to find someone to use as a model. Once I find someone I'll make a post.

I used a grid pattern instead. This way She has more styling options and she'll have straight parts. I started my hair the same way. If you look at the post where I flat twisted her locks into a bun it has a neater more organized appearance. Well to me it does. It's all preference. Thanks for posting :)

Wow its so good to see a young girl with a natural hair style over a kiddie perm, hows she holding up with them
renceferd83 3 years ago
She loves her hair! They are aleady locking. I curl them with rollers and put them in little pony tails. She looks adorable. I taught my girls from birth that they are beautiful naturally. My children love their kinky hair. They even tell their friends they shouldn't perm their hair.

Thats right! teach them other little girls in school something the teacher cant tell them.

She is too cute..I startd my husband's locs and found that the black protein gel dried too flaky & left the hair too hard..I didn't use that much...
honeybun705 3 years ago

You did a wonderful job. your child is absolutely beautiful, and she's so happy to get her locs. thanks for sharing this video

It still looks great though, but it's a lot of work and patience.
tbey82 3 years ago
yea ive been locing up for 5 months going on 6 months and i know all about patience lol encourage her so she can hang in there because locs are a lot of upkeep during the beginning stages

KinKyKeniKe 3 years ago 2
