  • @braddersj01 I know your comment is 6 months old, and you may well know thius by now - A Supernova is what happens when a red giant (or larger) collapses. It becomes a white dwarf, no bigger than the earth, but the red giant contains a massive amount of energy which the white dwarf cannot hold. So all of that energy, along with any elements it contained are blasted out into space in a massive explosion. That's the supernova. =)

  • @censurabass our sun is too small to go supernova, like most in a standard cycle that are small only to make a white dwarf.. it will instead create a planetary nebula, which is when the outer layers are shed to leave behind the white dwarf surrounded by a gas cloud..

    12 solar masses are need for a supernova from a dying star, and even from an already formed white dwarf for collape into a type I supernova, 1.4 masses are needed.
