im 15, 5'8 and right footed. I prefer to punt, but a successful drop kick from me can hit the top of the opposing 18 without wind. when i drop kick though, I have only about a 70% success rate... Im trying to get better with it and when i do it i drop with my right hand upside down palming/guiding the ball. if i were to drop kick with my left hand, my balance gets affected and i usually don't have the results i do when i drop with my right hand. Should i keep doing it w/ my right or left? :/
agreed. if you are going to use the dropkick with your right foot, then I would drop the ball out of your right hand. I also use the dropkick as my preferred method, and dropping the ball out of the left hand pulls my left should down too forward in front of my body, thus affecting my the distribution of my body balance and doesn't allow me to maximize the full range of motion with my right leg. Thus, I drop out of my right hand as well when I hit a dropkick.
Ive always wondered but never gotten a straight answer form my coach since he was an indoor goalie, is there an advantage to dropkicks vs punts? like different situations for each one?
I do clinics all over the world, but they are usually set up by other people in those specific locations. if someone in Canada would like to put together a goalkeeping clinic I would be more than happy to come.
Hi, just wanted to know where abouts the academy is. and what are the requirements to join. because i think this will be perfect fo me. thanks for reading
Hi, im having problems with my punts after i changed my motion. i used to use a sidekick but all i was doing was clipping the the bottom of the ball and its just going straight up so i tried a more straight follow through. something like the ones you show here. the problem is i have topspin on my ball making it dip and not going the distance. can you help me?
without seeing you actually kick a ball, I am guessing a bit..but it sounds to me like the problem is in the torso of the body at the time the foot is making contact with the ball. When you make contact with the ball, really make sure that your head is slightly back behind your shoulders. this should help you with lifting the ball. It sounds like you are leaning forward too much at the moment and your foot is not getting underneath the curvature of the ball.
Just want to thank you for the great tips on your vids, kept a clean sheet today, used alot of your tips. I think you guys should put out a video about positioning cause its very important!
I like the "Brazilian kick" better. I use the Brazilian kick and I'm only 17 but I kick from the penalty area to the other, on a 105x65 m pitch. It's all about the touch.
agreed.... that particular style of kick is difficult for a lot of goalkeepers to master, but, when you do master it, I believe it is the most effective weapon in the kicking arsenal.
on my drop kicks, they still tend to be a little high. But the thing that bothers me is my distance is still about half way between the other 18 and the end of the circle. They are more accurate and longer than when they are lower
Wow, nice dropkick around 5:15. I always tend to break my dropkicks cause I hit the ball too early which kind of cracks the shot. But I'm working on it ;)
I make the same distance that you make in the 1st kick but i'm allways at the 12 o'clock to the point a want to put the ball. And this vid is making me see where i'm wrong. The key is allways timing. Now is better to work on this.
the second drop kick was slightly off to the right, and that was because I was a bit slow on the rotation of my hips and shoulders....the first one was high quality, though. If I was still playing and hit that in a game, I wouldn't be bothered in the least. The second one, I would have to adjust though.
what i love about practicing punts and DKs is how much its like watching a golfer admire his tee-off shot....after the hit, we both admire the distance, air, location, and final position of the ball :)
ps. ive gotten accustomed to doing DKs with a two handed drop(maybe 1.5 hand drop as i use my other hand as a guide hand up until the last moments)..although i think it would be to my advantage to use the one handed drop...any advice?
the only rea issue you have to be concerned about is that a two handed drop, might put you in an uncomfortable body balance just before striking the ball....but that said, I've never tried it myself, so I'm not speaking from experience. I guess the real question is, are you happy with the result of the strike and can you do it consistantly? (2 questions) If so, then I wouldn't really worry about changing it.
Interesting that must GKs use the opposite hand, I now understand why. I'll give it a try & see it can improve my accuracy more. I can bragged about scoring 2 goals before with my long & high punts. But I got a favourable bounce twice lol. I played a lot of Gealic football when growing up & we always used our hand on the same side as our kicking foot, but I have come to the conclusion it's because we needed the other hand to defend off the opponent when kicking!

@kclove121 I use dropkicks when it's windy, punts for me go far but to high which it takes a little longer to land or to get to your forwards etc.

when you say "a little high"...how high are we talking? Like way up there in the clouds, or maybe 3 or 4 goals stacked up on top of each other high?

only of of them is straight. 5:15 is a poor kick.
Goggez 2 years ago
all of them are straight within 5 yards of center....the curvature of the camera lens makes it appear to curve much more than it does in reality.

hey guys thanks alot for posting the videos!
Really appreciate it.
Its really amazing how sometimes the ball seems to be floating when you give it a good dropkick.
doctorlove323 2 years ago
exactly...when you hit it just right and smooth...the balls just seems to float downfield.
